How to make a Dowels Maker

2019 ж. 26 Қаз.

Hello friends
I made a tool to make dowels.
Make a hole with a drill with the same diameter as the required dowel and cut with an iron saw.
Although the surface of the dowel is rough, it is more useful than commercial products because the adhesive works well.
Also, dowels can be made with stable dimensions.
I actually tried it and it was fine.

  • Thank you for an interesting and informative video. I did just notice one thing: The whole jig is made left-handed so that the drill must rotate in the "unscrew" direction. This may require "electric drill - screwdrivers" to propel the wood. It can be made for the "screw in" direction by (a) inclining the hacksaw to the right and not to the left and (b) bending the cutting portion from the opposite side of the plate.

  • Thank you! It worked fine. I used a 2mm sheet metal and the dowels turned out great. Only thing is you have to make the holes 0,5mm bigger than the dowel you intend to make. Cheers!

  • Very nice. What I like about your setup, is that it can be used in ANY shop. It's simply a plate that can go in any vice. Especially handy for those times when you need a dowel, and don't want to run to the hardware store. If you haven't already, you should think about marketing the little tool (unless they're already out there).

  • I got one of these (broken) in with a bunch of tools at a garage sale. I was wondering how to use it then realized that the person who made it used an old chisel and the broken bit was the largest hole plus handle. How they managed to drill through that quality of chisel I would like to know as it equates to HSS or tool steel quality. Going by the rest of the tools (after the person's funeral) this was made either before W2 or just after. Reasoning he was in his 90's when he passed and would have access to the tooling that could cope with the job. I enjoy using the rest of the tools I got from the garage sale I also know I didn't get most of them as he'd left them to his grandsons. I hope they enjoy using them as much as I do for the one's I was lucky to get.

    • Puts it at an angle so the corner with catch the wood and shear it odd. Ideally better way is to drill 3 smaller holes not all the way through around each one dies the same trick. Space the 3 smaller holes 1 mm from edge. It makes dowels but none are super smooth. Can use a chisel to same effect. Also when making dowels.. cut 1/16 bigger then you need.
