  • This was an undercard event. No one knew they were watching two legends in their only significant meeting (the second fight was meaningless imo)

    • The rematch was pretty irrelevant to me too. The time for that to happen was late 2001 or early 2002, they both had a ton of momentum and star power by that point and both were at the apex of their abilities as well. It is a damn shame it didn't happen then but that's boxing, great matchups that happen years too late are sadly too common.

Roy beats Canelo Alvarez, Mayweather, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard. Fighters in their prime ...... Roy Jones is the best to ever step in a ring. Fastest hands in the history of boxing, most athletic boxer ever. It's like God made him the perfect fighter. Roy was gifted so far above everyone else it was the reason for his eventual defeat. He never needed to learn the defensive boxing skills like proper head movement, keep your hands up, body positioning like normal pro great fighters had to learn. • That's Roy, not even at 100%, completely shutting down a guy who is - consensus - a top 2 or 3 middleweight of all-time. Hopkins fought that exact same way for the next 10 years with an incredible amount of success, but would have never won more than, legitimate, 2 rounds against Roy with them both at their best. At peak, he is at least a 10-1 favorite against any 160, 168 or 175 guys in history. That is the greatest, pound for pound.

    • @@francishegarty8087 anyone can beat anyone, by that logic. McClellan was great, Benn was dangerous too - but Roy completely iced Mulinga who beat Benn...what you can see, actually watch, is that no one ever came close to beating Roy for more than a round during this stretch, and that includes James Toney and Hopkins, who are pretty well established as all-time greats. So pointing to guys who had good careers is fine, but the reality is the only fights that anyone actually believed would be competitive were fantasy fights against Ray Robinson or Marvin Hagler. Those guys you mentioned refused to come to the US to fight, no one even really was that interested in the Hopkins rematch because you could watch what each guy was doing, and Roy was literally just light years ahead of EVERYONE during that stretch from 93-99.
