The Ukrainians who refuse to fight and are trying to leave the country | DW Analysis

2024 ж. 29 Сәу.
909 029 Рет қаралды

Since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion hundreds of thousands of men have volunteered to defend their country against the Russians. Now one and a half years later Ukraine needs to fill the ranks through conscription. Some Ukrainians are refusing to fight and looking for ways to leave.
DW’s Max Zander filed this report from the southern border with Romania. We also hear from Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Lisa Yasko, and military analyst Frank Ledwidge in Oxford.

    • Thats why I am against ukraine joining the eu. The EU and its politicians are already heavily corrupt as it is, especially our presidents von der Leyen. They are great at hiding it and going free of consequences, I dont believe we need more of that. That said, the faster the system putin has build around him falls, the better that would be. I dont see russia backing up from this huge mistake they made and I dont see civilians getting involved in overthrowing their government. They will keep sending troops of unmotivated and poor educated soldiers and the conflict will go on and on without much movement on both sides.

What i dont understand is why the EU & Ukraine are Pretending that Ukraine Can become a member subject to meeting “7 conditions” (one of which is ending corruption & another is ending oligarchy). • As one of the many Ukrainians who left their own country, I wanna affirm, that there is no rights, no law it’s literally the worst country in Europe I can almost compare it to North Korea because it isn’t so far from the truth. First of all it’s a totally corrupt government, that’s why our country is so poor (btw the most poor in Europe, even including Moldova). Secondly it’s an absence of the law, as I said before, even the courts are corrupt, so you can’t defend yourself and your rights. The men in the suit can just kidnap you right on the street (after beating you, if you persist) considering that it’s completely Illegal and the police will do nothing when this happens right in the front of them, because they work against people. In our country pensions of 40$ bruh…. That’s not like I don’t wanna serve in the army, but not in the Ukrainian army. I don’t wanna die or become crippled for this country considering the above reasons, I’d rather suicide than they force me to go to fight for this trash. It is simply clear, Ukraine's Russian speaking population is treated as second class citizens, the state doesn't care for them at all, the state mostly cares for those catholic Ukrainian Galicians living in far west Ukraine... they want the Russian speaking population to die, so that Ukraine could become more homogenous. I am not talking nonsense, it is a fact. This is why, I would advice you to manage a way to sneak into Russia. I know you may not like it, but 5 million Ukrainians have done the same. They have fled to Russia, cause Russia is the only place they have for a safe future. In places like Poland, Ukrainian men are getting deported back to Ukraine to fight in the meat grinder. Take care my friend! Go to Russia asap! the Kiev regime is growing desperate everyday, trying to snatch all Ukrainian men they could from neighbouring countries to die. The US meddled in Ukrainian internal affairs in the name of "promoting democracy and combating corruption." In reality, the US was also bribing Ukrainian politicians to do what the US wants. Russia saw this as unacceptable due to "sphere of influence." Many, and I mean MANY Ukrianian politicians don't care where they get their bribes from either Russia or the US as long as they get rich. During a state of severe natural or manmade disaster a centralized authority is required to prevent total anarchy,enforcing discipline saves lives in the short run and ensures that everything required for the most basic necessities to survive are somewhat handled in organized and logistical fashion. To my understanding ukraine is still under Martial Law under the definition of state of national Conflict/War. Although Martial Law cannot undo,circumvent or othervise limit or depower a constitution it gives the central military administration legal executive authority to enact orders which might limit individual rights and among those rights they can limit the freedom of movement,Ukraine did this by instituting conscription through the presidential decree in 2022 february.

  • What I’m really confused about is the sentiment “in the beginning of the war there were tonnes of volunteers but now Ukraine needs a draft”. From what my relatives told me the draft has been going on from day 1 of the war. Most of those fighting on the front lines aren’t volunteers but drafted men.

    @annach109@annach1095 ай бұрын
    • Ukraine has lost well over 300K soldiers since the start of the war (killed and heavily injured). Its army's best trained and most motivated troops were slain in the much-praised offensive in the autumn / fall of 2022. They are scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

    • @@GeorgE-yo5yc Stay truthful here. They specifically hadn't drafted the younger generation so far to avoid breaking young families apart. They are not even close to "bottom of the barrel". But it's only natural that after long fights, not much progress recently and heavy trench fighting people are now less willing to volunteer. That's no different than what would happen in the west. If this war became hot between NATO and Russia, we'd fight initially with volunteers, reservists and the standing armies, but if the war would drag on several years, we'd have to draft men just as much. (Something some guys in the west apparently haven't understood yet, that it's their duty to do so as a citizen when things become bad). To me it's a bit confusing how the younger generation apparently now thinks that their freedom came without a price. The price for being a free citizen anywhere in our nations was ALWAYS that if that freedom needs to be defended you have to serve. Apparently getting rid of conscription in most countries has somehow made young men think they no longer have any duties. Being a citizen ALWAYS came with responsibilities.

    • @@LeutnantJoker The irretrievable losses of the Ukrainian army exceeded the number of the active military personnel. This was confirmed by the independent research group War Tears, which shared the new data on the Ukrainian losses, based on the special math model. According to the report released on February 22, 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost 377,324 servicemen killed. For the first time, the number of killed servicemen exceeded the number of active fighters of the AFU, which is currently 366,625 servicemen. The 377,324 Ukrainian losses is by far the most conservative estimate. The number of severely wounded who will never be able to rejoin the army is around 250,000. The analysis also revealed that the average monthly losses of Ukraine amount to about 16 thousand dead. As reported by various other sources, the number of irretrievable wounded losses is comparable to or exceeds the number of dead. Thus, the total number of irretrievable Ukrainian losses may be estimated at about 32 thousand people per month. War Tears concluded that “even if Kiev manages to solve all the problems it faced with during the training of military personnel, then 500 thousand soldiers mobilized will be enough for about 16 months of hostilities, that is, until the summer of 2025.
