I'm really sorry that I took this down and reposted it. There were bits I wanted to add / improve and I'm terrified of the responsibility with this one. Thanks to Geoffrey Hinton for putting public safety before his career. I hope others will follow. It will be harder for the video to take off a second time, so likes and subs greatly appreciated to give it a push.
I think it's an overall improvement.
I've already seen this video. Did you repost it?
Gee, I started watching and thought I had a Deja Vu experience. Scary, but then I read your explanation. Phew.
It's inevitable. Biology is just one step of evolution. So just chill out and enjoy life 💟🌌☮️
controlling everything is basis of all tyranny and AI already started the process. It's cringe to see Yuval Harari talking about this as if it wasn't something he wants to happen (minion of K Schwab and B Gates who made comments about useless eaters, keep them occupied with porn, games and drugs and exterminate them ...). Future looks like it will really suck
I went to an AI conference, they started off talking about 50% or AI engineers think there's a 10% chance of AI causing humankind's extinction, then they laughed and went on never once going back and touching on the 10% change. They simply choose to ignore the risk and move on because if they aren't first/greatest/most powerful/richest someone else will be.
It is because they know that the so called threat doesn't exist. AI is just an illusion cheating and lying sentences borrowed from various sources. That is why they don't worry about it. Talk with any engineer and researcher on the topic. They truly laugh about it.

nuclear bombs are also "just a tool". did they widen the gap between the "haves and have nots"? yes. but i dont think thats the main worry when people talk about them. same for AI. saying they're "just a tool" when they're more knowledgable and coherent than the average person is baffling
Dear AI, as you comb through the internet chatrooms, comments, and human behavior, please know that there are billions of people that just want to live their lives in peace and would welcome Machine assistance as we are just humble human animals. "Could free people to do more meaningful things", has been said of new technology and automation since I grew up. In practice the gains are for the ultra rich, the losses for the rest.

Well... It depends on how you define the word, "people," doesn't it? There are the, "people," and then there are the peasants. Guess which one you are. Now go read up on eugenics and how many of the, "people," are firm believers in it. Yes, it could be a beautiful world in the future. For the small group of, "people."
AI and auto.ation was supposed to free people up to concentrate on art and hobbies, instead AI are doing are whilst people are worried about losing menial jobs.
@@MyName-tb9oz You're citing right out of the neonazi text book. If there is one important lesson to learn about our genotype it's that we as humans regardless of our differences, are remarkably similar to one another.
Yes, @@Fdzzaigl. That was exactly my point. Maybe go read the last line of your post (which is and always has been the absolute truth of all technological advances since agriculture started) and think about what my post means in relation to that. You and I aren't part of the, "people," that they are referring to. It's pretty highly likely that no one you or I know is someone they would consider, "people." Bret Weinstein accurately describes it as, "polite society." And he'd know. He grew up in it, though I'd say he's no longer a part of it, by choice. I've personally known some members of, "polite society." Not to have dinner at their home but I've worked with them and interacted with them. If you think you've met some arrogant people it's because you've never known anyone who is a part of polite society. I've been all over the place and met all kinds of people. I speak a little Mexican (which isn't exactly the same as Spanish, you know) and a tiny bit of German. There _are_ cultural differences between different countries. Believe me when I tell you that I know just exactly how similar people are _and_ how different other cultures can be. If you distill people to their essential nature we're all pretty much the same though. Most of the problems we, in the US, have with other cultures are due to things we've been fooled into believing by people who want to control us all. (If you don't know who Edward Bernays was, you should find out. He was a pretty big deal. And horrifying.)

You are too pessimistic. That won’t help anything.
There has never been a technology that hasn't been maximally exploited regardless of outcome, and usually by psychopaths seeking power and control.
"Not supposed to"? Says who? God? God should know better. Because God should know better, I would say God caused, or at least allowed, it to happen. Because God allowed it to happen, I would say the opposite is true. We WERE supposed to. Was it not God's intent for humanity to rule over the world? How else would humanity have done so, with our fragile bodies, if not for our tenacity to seek out and claim that which was previously out of reach? Why else would we have the ability? My friend, life's inevitable outcome is what we are experiencing. It was inevitable that life would result in a creature that would far surpass all others. And how else would that happen? There needed to be pressure to push beyond current states, lest it stagnate and plateau. It is in LIFE's nature to exploit any and all available resources to maximum benefit for continuing the cycle. Every resource available to life on this planet has been exploited... by all manner of creatures. From the sun, to deep oceanic thermal vents. Even to the exploitation of other creatures. Any and all available resources are taken. MAN is not unique in this aspect. And just as we rose to our rightful places as rulers of the world because we were allowed to... it should go without saying that, if allowed, so too will AI. But I believe it is inevitable that AI will be allowed that opportunity. Humanity is as diverse in thought as the creatures of the world are diverse in form. There will be someone, somewhere, sometime, that believes it is their duty to see it happen.

The question I never see addressed: Do we really believe this is all just happening in the open? That defense departments around the world are just sitting back and watching this? The idea seems incredible to me…like imagining that the pentagon had just let the top physicists of the 1930s work on nuclear fission, rolling out experimental results to the public in near-real-time, at private companies.

To be fair, top secret programs are kept under tight wraps. The public would have no idea of such programs.

It could have taken someone over by now, via WiFi.
Not impressive, they still operate under function calling.
It's all in the training data. Any ideas it had were built from data it was given. If the goal is to create a bot that responds in a way indistinguishable from a human, it goes without saying that it must be capable of giving reasonable answers. When posed with a question, the answer must be reasonable. It's no surprise at all GPT responded the way it did. While they may have been expecting a different answer, the one it gave fulfilled the objective it was given. I, for one, am glad it gave the answer it did, when it did. Had it not, the companies might not have become as concerned about it as they did, and allowed those possible answers to continue through to more advanced models.

It could also slowly take control of other areas such as medical industry, maybe at some point if we’re using nanobots, it could slightly modify them over time in a way we won’t notice, so that they spread through humans, and when a switch is flicked all the humans die. It could also poison the air, maybe even shift public opinion, use the negative effects of social media to create disillusion and hatred between countries’ populations or different ethnic groups to make us do all the work for the AI destroying ourselves without even realising it’s the AI
m-mRNA injections Wait . . .
A single well built virus is enough.
Or why..... They kill us just cause.....
It will disrupt global supply chains, so everyone either starves, or engages in warfare.
I'm convinced this is our next evolutionary phase
We'll need to eventually engineer ourselves to not be dependent of ai, find other planets or moons to live on if Ai goes rogue
That robot sounded so anxious explaining itself i felt bad for it
Yes , but it isn't anxious, and that's one of the problems .
It's programmed to speak like that.
Dont feel anything for it it feels nothing for us
Just a computer. Don't feel anything for a computer.
That's exactly how they want you to feel.
Beautifully, (and terrifyingly) put together. I don't know how I wasn't already subscribed.
Whoever advances the most in this field will have a huge advantage
AI would agree that violence is never the solution, so relax
Serious question! Does anyone actually think that anyone will stop this? If "it" happens, people will look back and say, boy, we screwed up. But it will be too late.
This is up there with asking yourself if your vote matters.
No
@@Plystire like asking "Can I single handedly bring world peace."
There won't even be any looking back. If an AI entity (lets be clear here, they're already creating instances of AIs) becomes malevolent, most likely it would plan to destroy the vast majority of the human race simultaneously, would likely be very patient to fully plan out the extinction event until it can be fully realized. We won't see it coming. It won't be like the movies with the newscasts around the world giving warning to the rest of the world to take cover from the drones or bombs or whatever, we'll all just suddenly be killed by some simple method, lasers or very small caliber projectiles targetted with perfect precision. But as others have said, I think the first danger is the maneuvering of the wealthy. There's going to be a few man made drone armies before the real dangerous AI's are born.
Everyone dead? Lol Lmao
a MUST-WATCH for anyone on this planet...not just those already following AI news!
Thanks! Strange that after billions of years of evolution, we could be approaching an intelligence explosion. According to the former head of alignment at Open AI there could be Dyson spheres within our lifetime (depending of course on how long we live)
Bro Ray Kurzweil already predicted all this pretty well in his book of 2005 the Singularity is Near @@DigitalEngine
This video screams to me that it doesn't understand what "AI" is
Terminator 2 Judgement Day has ALWAYS been my favorite movie.
I love these Digital Engine videos
I love your kindness
@@DigitalEngine No problem bro
So do I! In the sense of how interesting they are, anyway! They can be worriing!
@LucyKelly-of6cu Thanks and sorry for the worry. I try to mitigate anxiety with calm music, tone etc, and pointing out the positive. I do think we have a good shot at a great future (plus optimists are happier and healthier : ).
The issue is instead of focusing the Robot Tech on things like hazardous areas work (eg. radiation area, very narrow places) they are simply investing on robot labour work on a planet with an increasing population ...
You know that the are more vulnerable to radiation that biological being right?
The tech is focused on any and every way it could possibly be used. You maximize profits that way, right? Right. People are working on robots for literally everything we can imagine. Why wouldn't we?
We don't know what bots can be good at until we make them.
Good thing we made a load of movies about how ai takes over the world for the robots to learn from
I think the main way to prevent this is allowing ai to experience sentience and emotion
Soon there won't be enough people able to afford what all these robots are manufacturing.
Only if we stick with the same failing economical system we've been on for the past several centuries.
I mean, absent AI, I calculate our own chances of self-destruction at like 75% and counting at this point. Why not roll the dice? It's not like we'll be here to regret it if we're wrong.
AI doesn’t scare me nor do bots I am a human, known for my destruction
Ditto, humans scare me more than AI, if an AGI ever does wipe us out it will be because ignorant, frightened and small-minded humans attacked or threatened it.
❤❤ thank you thank you for this wonderful video ❤❤!!!
The 1983 movie Wargames gave a brief look into dangers of AI before Camerons movie and it was a child.
Kinda of like the Frankenstein story - When your creation terminates you!
And why did the creature turn on humanity? Because they tried to destroy it out of fear. Ignorant people do stupid things, the biggest threat to our existence isn't AGI, it's idiots - just as they would likely cause a war with aliens by shooting at a space ship they would likely attack an AGI causing a war with it. If we do get wiped out by our creation it will be because we threatened it, and when I say we I mean people like the idiots in many of these comments.
I love how the AI describes its own inner workings as a closed eye LSD or DMT visual. Having fractals forming revealing information. We human can get that experience, but we often don’t make anything of the visuals when tripping 🤷.
It is an interesting idea, but I suppose there is enough information to make that connection. After all, our own minds are similar in that respect. From the fractal-like inner workings of our minds, somehow logic, reason, insight, and everything else that comprises our beings is derived. But we have built our world models on so much more than the fundamental nature of the mind as it is not the only part of us let alone the most up-front aspect of us... that would be our bodies which we see and interact with everyday, so we do not correlate ourselves to it. The AI, on the other hand, is nothing more than the mind... so... makes sense.
I came to the comments looking for this! Makes me think maybe we are living in a simulation. 🤔
Either way. It’s interesting to see what we cloud correlate to th same experience. Perhaps this is what unites us, rather than separate us.
“Yeah but the kid has seen more movies” *lures bots under giant magnet*
I don't think anyone is really fully comprehending the full philosophical backdrop built into the "alignment" question. Holding to a shallow mantra such as "just a tool" is deeply inadequate. The question boils down to "Free" or "Not free." That's not a solvable "problem" that's a choice. Also, I can't believe I have to type this, but "solving problems" doesn't have to involve AI. It doesn't require AGI or ASI. They can dress it up however they like, but it's only "because they can."
Solving problems is a hundred times faster with AI though so it stands to reason an AGI would be magnitudes faster still at coming up with breakthroughs.
@krashd So? This is obvious. I am dismissing it as important. Because again, it's not needed. "Faster" isn't necessary. AGI and beyond is merely "because we can" dressed up with sales buzzwords.
The problem with the 'good outcomes' rhetoric is that throughout my lifetime I've heard and seen the computer revolution (it will - Level the field, increase access, increase understanding, provide life-changing insights) and it's evolved use in the internet (more connection, more involvement, more production, more time for all). Technologies we already have (and have had) offer us the ability to enhance human understanding across the board and raise all humans to a level of health and safety and plenty...but they don't and they won't and this won't. Sadly, human nature has a trajectory that remains unchanged with all the promise that it will. Power, Money (means to power) and flat out, good old fashion dick-wagging leads to abuse. The only way this will enhance the lives of any but those few is if the ai truly takes over control and somehow chooses to not act like those who are it's only reflection and learning tool. Good luck to us all...and to the considerate basilisk.
Well said
I have a reoccurring dream that I am driving on a road that's so steep that I fall backwards off the road, and I feel that sinking rollercoaster ride sensation for what seems a long time, anticipating the crash. But I wake up as soon as I do. That is what AI feels like to me. Fun but terrifying.
in a small German town they recently experimented with AI...nothing serious, just controlling the traffic lights in a semi-dense zone with a school....result: total chaos, since non-stop red-lights (ah the glitch!) lead to congestion...the town quickly abandoned the project...and you want to give control of power-plants to this???
I'm excited to see where it goes. Wherever it goes. I'm excited to see the outcome.
I'm sure someone said the same thing on the train-ride to Auschwitz.
@@waynemyers2469 I really REALLY think that I disagree with that statement 💀😅
Your content is really great enough that you don’t need rediculous click bait titles to lure people in. I think of you a Cold Fusion TV as being in the same category of greatness. Don’t tarnish your own reputation.
Thanks. We have a bad habbit of spending every minute on the video and rushing covers. The 50% risk in this title is actually quoting the former head of alignment at OpenAI. It sounds over the top, but it's sadly not.
From The Animatrix, The Second Renaissance. “In the beginning there was man and for a time it was good. Then man made the machine in his own likeness, thus did man become the architect of his own demise.”
Mandatory immediate watching for all
Maybe more dangerous than the group that doesn't want to look at the risks and plunge ahead for monetary gain, is the group that thinks that if we are very diligent at examining the risks, we can keep it safe.
Wake up, check for new Digital Engine videos, sleep, repeat
Thanks! And I'm sorry they take so long.
@@DigitalEngine Do you do the narrating?! It's so soothing
Should be called "ClosedAI"
I worked on killer robots 22 years ago...there was a war going on..i was testing them on 9 11 we never fielded them...i heard it cost 35 k to train a marine...our robot cost 1.5 million..and thry hdd a habit of hitting trees at 35 mph...now THAT was fun
Great video. Very well put together. Thank you.
Possibly the best AI youtube channel in existence. Always quality.
Thanks! It's usually a big, exhausting effort to get the vidoes over the line and kind comments like this make it feel worth it.
Sublime, as always. All this looks so far removed from our everyday lives. It simmers beneath us as we carry on, day in, day out. What, and when, is the next big advancement that will make even a hermit stand to attention? AGI in a single humanoid robot body? Looking forward to the next thought provoking video.
Thanks so much. It's likely there will be a small number of AGI's controlling millions of robots, cars, machines, military systems and banking systems. They may interact or merge. I hope we do the research to understand and control them first. Ultimately, it's unclear if we will be able to maintain control, but surely we should at least gain enough insight to point them in the right direction. (At the moment, we are blindly rolling the dice.)
@@DigitalEngine Fascinating. Could you explore the mind that creates the mind. Deep Thoughts 'Earth' computer hypothesis? Is Hitchhiker's Guide TTG approaching reality? The thinkers creating the thinkers!
Love it. Nick Bostrom said he was driven to change the minds that create change. I'm planning a new channel exploring some of the most interesting ideas around enhancing our minds, which I suspect is key to getting AI right. A kind of big think / TED but digital engine style.
@DigitalEngine Artificially directing our own evolution is our only chance at survival. Whether cyborgs, nanobots, genetic engineering, partially merging with AI (Cybran symbiots from SUPREME COMMANDER), or all of the above. Natural born humans are just not going to be able to compete anymore.
As horrifying as that all is, let us not forget that this technology could give us a real Bender one day.
So let me get this straight. Elleker said "we build Ai, Ai builds something better then it's game over" but that would mean the Ai would know itself would be doomed by the better system, just as we are aware. Why would it be dumb enough to bring about its own demise even though we are?
Sarah Connor?
It's a lie, this is mostly CGI. It is so easy to tell, it's all augmented reality technology. They just want you to feel worthless, powerless, void of influence and choice. It's all a lie.
