In today's episode, i set about taking the entire engine apart to get to the route cause of the poor running. Engine is a BMW M70 V12 from a 1991 850i.

  • I have an E38 750iL that I hope to never have to perform this much work on, but I still watch every second of your videos about your E31 just because they are so interesting and well done. Thank you for taking the time to make them!

  • Your video production quality has improved vastly compared to the last few videos. The editing, presentation, ff, camera angles, etc. Love watching your videos and love this project!

  • Very cool video man, I also have taken on a large project (which is now finished) in which I have zero experience doing any of this. At 36:46 it brought a smile to my face hearing that as I also have never done anything like what I did. I'm currently restoring a 2000 E38 740i with the M62TU. I redid the chains, guides, VANOS, gaskets, valley pan, vacuum system etc. I never timed a car in my life until now and it was rewarding having the car run without codes on my first try. My only criticism I have for you is you are not utilizing the computers as much as you can be. You are making it a bit harder on yourself than it needs to be. Rebuilding the engine is the best route and it's a great idea given the age of the car and its uncertainty but if you continue to ignore checking the computers, you will find yourself back to square one: a non running 8 series. I would try to setup ISTA too, if you can. I prefer INPA over ISTA due to how quick INPA boots, but ISTA provides you a top level understanding of all the modules on your car. Invest more time into just researching how to program the car, perform diagnosis etc. It was good seeing you run the injection valve test last video, but you should be doing more than this. I am a software engineer and this is exactly how you troubleshoot software: check the error log! Good luck and I can't wait for the next video, cheers from USA!

  • I don't think you need to touch the block. Those bores still look brand new, especially considering the high compression figures.

  • Did this engine sit a long time? I wonder if you could have simply fixed those stuck lifters without dropping the engine and got it running well enough so the valves would start sealing again with regular driving. I wouldn't touch the bottom end at all.

  • Good work Steve neat and clean. Are you planning on rebuilding the bottom end as well?

  • Great video Steve. I've started work on my 840 again, but am finding it hard now. I am 71 next week and things don't get any easier to tell the truth. May not be able to finish it, we'll see. It would be great if Lukas is it? could video or take some photos of his work on the heads. In all honesty, I have seen valves much worse than yours and they still seal pretty well. I can't remember, did you perform a leak-down test when you were looking for the misfire? Anyhow, look forward to your next video.

    • Fair play to you, keep it up, I find it hard myself sometimes. Yes I performed leak down, failures across the board.

    • @@stevesbmwbarn5706 OK. In that case I too would suspect the valves/seats. Bores look stunningly good, something which really seals the fate of those engines. It will be superb when you get it finished.

  • I don't see any rust. I see carbon/oil brown. Why do you think it's rust? Was there water sitting in the engine?

    @glock22357@glock223579 ай бұрын
    • On close inspection, it looks like rust. The car sat for long periods undriven.
