  • One thing you must remember after playing with wild animals is that they tend to have a ton of fleas.

    @joca1378@joca1378 Жыл бұрын
    • Sure, but most of the time, the fleas that attach to animals and humans are a bit different, right? I haven't heard of humans being infested with fleas before. They can, however, carry diseases. I think it's been mostly eradicated, especially in pets, but Rabies is an a terrifying disease. If you experience symptoms, it's already too late, unless you're a descendant of some tribe somewhere, that developed partial immunity to the virus.

  • My grandpa used to tell me about when he was a kid back in Indiana he had found a baby fox separated from the mom in the woods around the farm, so he brought it home, got it food and water for the next few days and when he went to let it go, the fox wouldn’t leave! It just ended up living around the farm like a dog! I always thought that was so cool to hear about.

  • Foxes are THE BEST! I had an urban fox friend from when he was young, it was at work but it was in an area where it wouldn’t be safe to teach him that humans are safe to trust so I didn’t try and pet it but used to play chase with him to condition him to run from people that got too close. I worked security in a construction recycling centre at night so I’d chase him around and up mountains of recycling, we had SO much fun. Because he was young inevitably he got hit by cars a few times and he’d always come hobbling to me for food because he knew the food I fed him would fix him up much better than the rats he’d hunt. When he was injured he didn’t even try to hobble away from me, we were true friends in those moments, I still didn’t try to pet him though. When he found a mate she built her den in a skip at the back of the site and he introduce me to his kids, he introduced me to his kids and literally paraded his only son in front of me one night, he was such a proud dad. He got to the age where he wasn’t really playful anymore and we just used to hang out, he’d do patrols with me and walk with me like a guard dog. Wild foxes don’t tend to live for more than 2 years at most in an urban environment for various reasons but my Buddy was well over 4 by the time I had to leave him and he was smart as a whip, I know he lived a long time after I left but the saddest thing about helping him live a long life was that he actually had a few mates over the years but he outlived all of them, we went through a lot of his losses together. Foxes know love, I’ve seen their mourning first hand and it’s deep. I have the video of him introducing me to his kids and parading his son on my phone to this day, I’ll have to upload it to YT one day. Edit: The video is on my channel if anyone else wants to to see it.

    • You are so fortunate to have had that bond with the fox. I too had a lovely fox friend. I saw him as a cub down the bottom of a mine shaft dehydrated and dying. I climbed down and got him out, took him home, hydrated and fed him, wormed him and got him back to health. I named him Blue because that is a nickname that us Australians call redheads. We would play together for hours wrestling around on the floor and outside on the lawn. At the time I also had a chihuahua and a kelpie. Bluey and the chihuahua would play together but the kelpie pretended she could not see the fox. Bluey grew into a lovely red fox with beautiful red fur and a bushy tail and he would walk on the lead and ride in the car. When he was about a year and a half old we were walking near a creek where there were blackberry bushes and lots of rabbits. Bluey could smell the presence of the the rabbits. I let him off the lead. He ran a distance away, then turned and gazed at me for for several moments as if he was saying goodbye, just like in a movie, then he turned and ran off into the wilds and I never saw him again. I hope Bluey had a good life.

    • Good thing rabies isn’t really a thing in the UK

      @MegaBeastguy@MegaBeastguy Жыл бұрын
    • There are zero cases of rabies in the UK now due to our insanely strict animal importing laws. So you've actually never seen a rabid fox or any rabid animal in the UK, although there can be illnesses that mimic the virus so could easily be mistaken for rabies. I believe we eradicated it in the early 1920s so we've not had it for nearly a century now. However, the mass importing of dogs and cats from other countries as part of rescue schemes to the UK means that the likelihood of rabies being reintroduced is pretty high. The dangers with foxes are due to the few but savage random attacks on sleeping people and babies in urban areas. There are a few serious cases where people required plastic surgery due to a hungry fox sneaking through the window and biting their faces, tearing their lips off. One case rather recently involved a small baby who was nearly killed after a fox tried to attack them. So it's pretty serious stuff to befriend foxes, especially urban foxes. There's a reason why they have to remain distant to humans. They don't always want to be your friend if they are desperately hungry. It's a shame because I absolutely love foxes, but I wouldn't ever want to semi-tame one because it actually puts them at risk of being destroyed.

    • Yes a Russian breeder started breeding generations of foxes so that like dogs they will be domesticated over time and develop features that aid in a domesticated life such as floppy ears to protect their sensitive hearing in populated areas, but this would not effect any wild foxes as A. The domesticated foxes would have to be released to then breed with the wild foxes and B. It would take several generations of breeding for wild foxes to adopt domesticated traits. Wild foxes acting friendly is more akin to cats and how they chose to incorporate themselves in to human populations leading to a eventual symbiotic relationship where cats would catch vermin and the farmers etc. Would reward the cats to keep them doing the work so foxes acting charming and friendly so that they are tolerated by humans and have access to our bins etc
