  • This question has been on my mind since Tesla opened up their network, "How will 800 volt cars charge at the Tesla Superchargers?" I found this video Googling the question. Thanks for explaining it!

  • Just discovered your channel - very well scripted and shot, good work. I think the Cybertruck has a switable pack that can be either 800V or 400V depending on what it plugs into - I don't have firm details on this, but worth talking about I think. V4 (tall) super chargers will solve all the problems, 1000V, long cables, CCS communication, we'll have to see how quickly Tesla upgrades their older sites, especially those ancient v1 120kW stalls in vital but lesser used location cross country.

    • Not really, as the E-GMP cars do not use the solution claimed in the video, and you can get 100-150kw on 400V chargers, except the V3 and V4 from Tesla...

  • I charged an EV6 on a Tesla V4 charger in the UK 4 days ago. V4 Chargers are available at a few locations across europe. The charge speed was limited to 42kw. Note in Europe most chargers and cars have CCS2 connectors so no magic dock required so the physical connector is not part of the problem. It appears in europe that eGmp cars can get 100kw at V2 Superchargers and only 42kw at V3 and V4. This is pending a software update on the Tesla side.

  • Whoa… NY? Hope you're having a nice trip, Lorena, even if you had to leave Callas in AZ. I'm surprised you could even get a 40kW charge in that EV6. Others have not been able to charge E-GMP at all from Magic Docks. And now Hyundai is moving to an IMA pack. Will it solve the incompatibility? Sounds to me that, since Tesla is planning to put 1000V charging in its Cybertruck, they need to work out that level of charge for ALL their Superchargers ASAP. Once they do, I say they need to produce and sell "Magic Dock" connectors as separate adapters so consumers can purchase and use them with any and all NACS DCFC.

    @Yanquetino@Yanquetino9 ай бұрын
    • Magic Dock connectors won't work on "any and all NACS DCFC" because Tesla V2 Superchargers and cars communicate only on Tesla's proprietary CAN system and not the CCS system. The only DCFC from Tesla that will and can communicate with and charge a non-Tesla is Level 3 and Level 4 which incorporate both CAN and CCS communications. It will be the Level 4 that will support the faster speeds Lucid and Hyundai/Kia group (and others) need. A portable Magic Dock will not work period. It's not just about the connectors fitting. Don't forget, Tesla is going from a proprietary CAN only system to universal one that supports their CAN and the current CCS standard. Once the current lot of earmarked Magic Docks are installed, that will be the end. Now that most OEMs have moved to NACS, the Magic Dock is essentially dead.

      @Techridr@Techridr9 ай бұрын
    • @@Techridr That's why I said "they need to work out" the compatibility. Sounds like you're saying it is simply NOT possible with V.2 and V.3 Superchargers. Ergo, the 1000v Cybertruck won't work on them either, only V.4 models. Wowza, Tesla better start cranking them out ASAP. Odd how Lorraine managed to get at least 40kW for the EV6. Fluke, I guess.

      @Yanquetino@Yanquetino9 ай бұрын
    • @@Yanquetino Yup, they need to get on it, but I have faith. The SC network has been growing 35% year-over-year so now that NACS is becoming the actual standard, I'll be willing to bet that growth curve will climb more. Also, I do think it's possible with V3, but they'd have to get each V3 online in a "standby" state with CCS communications but current V3s have short cables, so whats the point? That's cost prohibitive, so they only do the ones they currently add Magic Dock to, but again, I think the M-Dock is as good as dead. New V3s and V4s should have longer cables for any compatible car so they can just focus on compatibility with the new installs. The good news for us Tesla owners is that as crowded as it may get during the growth period, we still have a lot of V2 stations that ONLY Tesla's can use. I'm thinking with the timeline in place for Ford, GM etc., Telsa will have to have a certain amount "online" in order to meet whatever agreements they have with them, so I'm sure it will all get done

      @Techridr@Techridr9 ай бұрын
  • At the beginning October 2023, of I was able to get 97kW with my EV-6 at the Tesla supercharger w/ a magic dock in Parish NY. I do have all of the KIA updates, including the battery preconditioning. I'm fairly sure Tesla updated the charging limit. On the same trip, the EV-6 pulled 235 kW from a 350 kW charger.

  • I drive an EV6 in Europe where we can charge at most Tesla sites. When I go to a Tesla v3 site I get 100 amps and 420 volts i.e. 42 kw. When I go to the Tesla v2 sites I don’t have this limitation. I cannot see the plug is the limitation and clearly the car is not the limitation when it works on v2 sites. The issue is only with Tesla v3 sites.

  • Charging at home is not always the cheapest......I use a Level 2 charger 2 miles from where I live and it is free. Free is cheaper than charging at home but home is the next best.

    @stanpiers247@stanpiers2479 ай бұрын
    • How long will free chargers like that be available, though? As more and more EVs get on the road, they will get harder and harder to come by.

  • Tesla superchargers are not the problem, I see people treat voltage as water pressure in a hose: more pressure you fill out a tub faster. People TESLA supercharger is not a problem because even in 800V you cant raise the cell voltage too fast and too much as you will damage it, those super high charging speeds never last more than a few minutes. Having reliable network is preferred to having a faster theoretical speed but not maintained and mostly non-functional

    @filippxx@filippxx27 күн бұрын
    • The low voltage is a problem. Yes full speed can not be maintained, but the higher initial speed will lower the total time spent at the station. This is a problem for all higher voltage vehicles and will be a bigger problem with high battery capacity vehicles (Pick-ups, delivery vans, transit buses).

  • The E-GMP cars do not use a traditional HV Booster, it actually runs the 400v through the motor to generate 800v! Not quite sure why you would use the EV6 in the video but only talk about the other solutions to get 400V charging in 800V packs? Also Audi/Porsche has a 150kw booster. Also, if you take your EV6 to a V2 Tesla supercharger, you will get 100kw, but on the V3 and V4 you will only get 42kw, because Tesla changed something

  • Tesla is eligible for a piece of the $7.5 billion federal subsidies for the construction of new electric vehicle charging stations across the country. As long as Tesla includes Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, they're eligible for subsidies. Nothing in the Charging Network Act announced on June 27, 2023, compels Tesla to make it convenient or fast for systems other than 400 volts to charge.

    @coloradoan2199@coloradoan21999 ай бұрын
    • Yes it does. Federal regulations require NEVI requires stations receiving funding to support 250V to 920V vehicles. Tesla has convinced some of the States distributing the funds that a 480V charger does that. They do not meet the intent of the law. They may meet the poorly written regulations issued by US DOT to distribute the funding.

  • It has NOTHING to with with the DC to DC boost in voltage. I Can charge my Ioniq 5 in Europe on a 400V 175 kW charger - and my Car Will receiver 175 kW. I Can charge 42 kW like you show on the video on Tesla V3 chargers, but on V2 i can chafe with 100 kW It’s a challenge in the CCS protocol, and Tesla seems not to care. Tesla’s network has been opened for long time in EU to all cars. I haven’t tested the one and only V4 super charger en Denmark yet, but I should support 800V cars.
