15 BEST Defenders In NBA History
Who do you think is the GOAT defender?
Scottie Pippen
This might be a hot take but Ben Wallace
Hakeem
Bill
Dennis Rodman... that man is a dog
Y'all forgot that Sidney Moncrief won the dpoy as a guard too, not only Payton and Jordan
He har haw
And Alvin Robertson
I was thinking of him as well. He and Mark Eaton should be on this list
@@killerbn8 Sidney moncrief was so understated young kids like me need to Hear the stories
He won 2
Imo, Dennis Rodman is the most versatile defender of all time. He could successfully slow down a Jordan and a Shaq.
Most versatile and best are different tho. He wasn’t nearly as impactful as some of the defensive hubs like kg, Hakeem, Robinson, Russell, and Duncan “. He was a one on one guy. But from a team aspect, he pails in comparison. Those guys actually could have an entire defensive scheme ran though them. Rodman couldn’t.

I can't believe the list doesn't even mention Bill Russell. I know he played in an era before DPOY, All Defense, and even blocks became a thing, but he was unquestionably the best defensive player for years during his prime.
He mentioned him and Wilt when he talked about Kareem, I was shocked too.
Fr and he is number 1 all time in defensive win shares
Tim Duncan was so underrated as a defensive player im shocked he never won atleast one dpoy
It makes sense then... because he was underrated.......
Tim Duncan is most underrated player ever. He is easily top 5 of all time, but nobody talks about him. I guess that is because of his quiet personality.
And yet he's the all time leader in all defensive team 😐😐😐
@@aaa-dk6jr TIm Duncan is a humble beast, for me he's The Best PF Of All Time
@@aaa-dk6jr top 5 pf
Thank you for putting some respect on Tim Duncan’s name
Yeah man he needs more respect
well, the thing about Duncan is that he doesn't need to block the shot because most of the time with his positioning, he made it really hard to shot over him. Quick and long hands, and pretty quick small jump just to touch or to contest the shot. That makes him as best protector of paint
@@drinabezfiltera5958 facts too many casuals don’t understand that there’s way more to defense than steals and blocks. Tim’s greatest asset was his IQ. Always rotating into position to cover his teammates, pointing out defensive lapses to the team during timeouts, the ability to block shots and keep them in play for fast break opportunities and the ability to alter shots without fouling. That’s what made him a great defender
I am not a Spurs fan but Tim Duncan should be a unanimous first ballot HOF. Maybe the greatest power forward of All Time.
He’s my favorite player
My favorite thing about Rodman: NEVER averaged more than 1 block or 1 steal per game. Just was always in the right place. Always got the rebound. Just goes to show how little those counting stats can matter sometimes.
But he could block and steal with the best of them at the most crucial times...
You might be the only person to look at a player and say their lack of stats is impressive. I respect it.
It’s too bad there’s no stat for all of the shots the opponent couldn’t take because of Rodman.
@@ceasarsanchez9086 he's just saying that 2 stats don't tell you the whole story about a player and their impact in the court

I was floored when this video ended without Bill Russell. Russell is in the short conversation(Russell, Olajuwon, Rodman, Duncan) of the actual best defensive player of all time. He's the blueprint of how defense is played.
I think that dikembe motumbo is underrated

@@kingdinodragonite3470 opinion=riding? then i could say the same about you i guess.
@@markmac2206 What's the argument for Pippen over Hakeem?
It is Hakeem Olajuwon. He could defend both the paint and perimeter at an elite level. His defense literally saved the Rockets's season from ending in 6 and won G7 in 94, locked up Ewing and David Robinson. He is top 10 in both blocks in blks and stls and is the all time leader in blks.
He kept up with fast and shifty guards while also doing more than holding his own against some of the most dominant big men in NBA history
WAIT! The best you could do with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain was an "Oh yeah, them too" at the end of Kareem's segment? "Those two" are so far in first and second place in career blocked shots, that there is no third place. The fact that the NBA did not track blocks does not detract from that as a known fact by everyone. Also, blocks WERE an official internal stat for the Philadelphia 76'ers. Wilt averaged 8.8 blocks in the 150-odd games he played for that organization. DPOY did not exist for them, otherwise one or the other would have won every year they were in the NBA.
As good as a defender Kobe was, he shouldn’t be on this list while Bill Russell isn’t.

Tim Duncan and/or Bil Russell. Duncan anchored the Spurs' defense and made them a top 1-5 defensive team nearly every season (with the exception of their "cursed years" in '09-'11 where someone or another was always getting hurt for them during that span), and usually were a top 1-3 defensive team, almost always #1 in the west which was the stronger conference. I imagine it was the same for Russell, but I've never seen the advanced stats for that era.
Bill Russell is the greatest defensive player ever and Wilt the second. Thought Sidney Moncrief and Moses Malone would have made it.

Wilt is definitely not the second. He was a great defender when he wanted to be. But he wasn’t nearly as impactful as u think. He was more of a big play guy rather than a team impact guy on defense. The numbers don’t back him as being that high up. He just camped in the lane and blocked anything that moved most of the time. There is far more impactful and versatile defenders than him. If anyone is second, it’s Hakeem, followed by Duncan, David Robinson, and kg. Then it’s a toss up between Kareem and wilt from there.
Rodman for his height personally

For me personally, MJ and Pippen are 1A and 1B when it comes to being the GOAT defenders of All-Time. When you talk about half-court defense, lateral quickness, passing lanes, shot blocking on the interior, dealing with size, physicality, hand-eye coordination, body placement, IQ in understanding your offensive guy, their tendencies etc. they were the best...
In those champ years, When MJ Pippen Rodman put on the full court press it was over for opposing teams. They couldn’t get the ball out of their back courts.
If they recorded blocks during Kareem's entire career, we would probably assume they'd do it during Wilt's as well, therefore Kareem wouldn't be anywhere near the blocks leader. 3 a game is great. Wilt's contemporaries think he averaged 12-14 for his career. They counted blocks the last two seasons he played and he averaged 8.8 per game. He would have averaged a triple double for his career with blocks and would have more than 15,000 for his career to the current leader, Hakeem's 3,830.

That was "Sidney Moncrief who the First TWO DPOY Awards ever Recorded in 1983 & 1984, Yes, a Guard Won the Firsts Back-to-back!" Also, Alvin Robertson won One too!
And Michael Cooper
Oh, it isn't in Order 😂
Defending is one kind of art
This is the most solid defense list ever
Tim Duncan really a top 3 player of all time
I’d put him 4th for me its lebron mj kareem and then duncan
Not quite top 3 for me. MJ, LeBron, Kareem and Magic are ahead of him imo.
@@bignonce7790 I respect it I look at it as has any player carries a team like the 99 spurs to the championship? In there second season
@@vibeinparadise9821 99 Spurs weren't carried
@@blo2706 pardon me I meant the 2003 team old Robinson young Parker and Ginobli and with the 99 team it was Duncan’s second season and lead them to the chip
Didn’t Sidney Moncrief win DPOY as a SG also?
No i think that was Alivin Robertson
To be honest, I think that Muggsy Bougues should be on this list, somewhere in the top seven at least. He was a menace when on defence, he stole from everyone, behind their back, too the side or sometimes directly infront of them. Its because he was so small for an NBA player that no one saw him. Even the goat himself said that he was a great defencive player.
Much Gratitude . Ps Hakeem Olajuwon, Shane Battier, Tajuan Prince and Bill Russell.
My all time two-way starting 5 C = Olajuwon PF = Duncan SF = Leonard SG = Jordan PG = Payton
