WOOD KNOT BALL (KNOT ART)

This wood knot ball is made from 180 knot cut offs from my cabinet shop. It is basically a big knot ball or knot sphere. Although it may look like it, it is KNOT ART. This 19" Geodesic sphere is made by Keith Williams of ODDBALL GALLERY. As a fan of Buckminster Fuller and the geodesic dome, this scrap wood project is a tribute to the design.
You're a bloody hero for doing that domino rally section!
Chris Franklyn 😀 I knocked it down accidentally several times before I got it all set up.
Videos eliminate the sense of hours and hours and hours he used cutting triangles. Art is like that. A lot if tedium that someone has to push through before you can even start creating. I started a similar hexagon art project last November. But I used stainless steel. I burned out after cleaning burnt stainless after 2 months with only one bucket of hexes with no sphere or other product made. The dominoes explains in seconds how "I spent my lunch break every day for two months cutting triangles" instead of, like phoning his wife or looking at KZhead. Hundreds of minutes.
Not since Magritte’s “Ce n'est pas une pipe” has a better art pun been performed, as was this hilariously edited and yet serious piece of art done by this fine gentleman right here. Chapeau, sir!
galex19 Thank you 👍🏼 I appreciate your positive review.
Great job! It's the actual Gordian Knot in real life!
👍🏼
That’s knot what I expected to watch tonight.
Thanks for the view.👍🏼 Just out of curiosity, did you see the short?
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams yes. Liked and subscribed because of the plywood short first. I’m wondering how the knot polyhedron would look if you’d also turned it into a ball? Or would the irregular grain make it it too onerous a task? Both look incredible and I appreciate the amount of work and precision required to make them.
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 I planned on rounding out the Knot ball, but I thought it looked cool as it was. I used up most of my smaller knots on this one ,but I still have plenty of big knots left. Maybe I’ll build a much larger Knotosphere.
my husband has collected knots for years, we have jars and vases displaying them all over our house. this is quite impressive what you have created here. your talent is incredible
Thank you, it is good to hear of a fellow knot collector. Each knot is like a wooden Rorschach test, everybody sees something different in the swirling grain. 😀👍🏼
That the gentleman had accumulated many hundreds of knotty cutoffs should tell you just how much woodworking he does and how much experience he has (the specialized woodworking tools is a pretty good giveaway as well).
chuckschilling 👍🏼
Absolutely stunning display of skill, patience, perseverance, humor and film making! Stunning.
See, never throw anything away. Looks amazing!
Every time I throw something away I need it two days later. 👍🏼
cool wood knot ball bro
Oh man, you're a pro! You made it look so easy.
Thanks 👍🏼 I have made 100+ of these so I've got most of the bugs worked out.
What a visual stunner. So beautiful. 💕
Givulinovich Thank you 👍🏼
Well as a retired wood pattern maker I find this totally fascinating. I have worked with lots of angles and now I see I will need to try and create one of these. Off to the drawing board AKA cad software to get a start. Lots of trial and error but this will be fun. I have done tumbling block turnings which compared to what you have done are rather simple. Fantastic work! Gary
ThePapa1947 Thanks 👍🏼. Let me know how it goes.
From thrash to treasure! Amazing idea!
Thanks 👍🏼👍🏼
Very cool. Inspirational. dig the shop too!
Hey Thanks 👍🏼
Sick. Nice work.
Thanks Steve 👍🏼 🤢
Mighty impressive that it aligns up so well considering that all the individual pieces are essentially cut by eye.
chuckschilling The triangle I drew on each piece of wood was just a basic reference. The first tablesaw cut was just done by eye. That straight cut set up the first miter cut and then the second miter cut was against the stop so it was more precise.
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams That makes sense. Thanks for setting me straight!
Absolutely incredible pal. 👊👊👊
Thank you
Still one of the coolest things I've seen. 👍
Dolphin Shooter Thank you 👍🏼
AMAZING, beautiful, great execution.

Eye that be a lovely piece of work Keith.

I like. As if the potatoes were peeled, but the eyes remained
I never saw it that way before. Interesting observation. 👍🏼
just awe·some man art. Thanks for your camera work too.
daniel burgess Thanks 👍🏼
I was wishing you would definitely do the Domino move, and then you did it! I was so happy! Amazing work by the way!
Anirudh Puranik 👍🏼 It fell down several times while I was setting it up. 😀
Omg - my dream wood shop!!
Dawn Boyer 👍🏼 mine too.
Beg to differ, that most certainly IS art!
👍🏼😀 Thank you
So Talented...appriciated your work.
Thanks for watching 👍🏼
♥.♥ Nice Work.
just beautiful
Thanks 👍🏼
Should have made into a hanging light fixture. The shadows created by the gaps would cast amazing shadows at night
That would be cool. I could probably still put a flexible led strip in there.
Ufff que satisfactorio es ver tus vídeos 😌

Thanks Mike. 👍🏼
Nice work 😍

Imperfect perfection.....
Adam Brown 👍🏼👍🏼
I wish you would’ve gone into detail on how to make this (like what size triangles you used & how to arrange it). Very cool!
Try this calculator, it has all the info. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
So cool.
Thanks 👍🏼
This is beautiful. Now I wonder how it would look like if you're to put a lightbulb inside
I tried this will some led strip lights , and it looked pretty cool. If I build another knot ball I will try to use more open knot holes so more light can get out.
Would make a lovely lamp !
It would 👍🏼
Magnifique !
👍🏼
WoW this is Amazing !!! I Love everything about this...Great Work!! I haven't been able to find how many hours this took unless I somehow missed it? Also have you considered making these into lamps? I think would also be pretty cool being lit from the inside projecting out through the open knots. The Illuminknottylite! Thanks for sharing your process!
Kristi Harkins this ball took about two weeks to build and film. If I build another one I could use all open knot holes so it could be used as a light. Illuminknotty I like that😀👍🏼
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams ODDBALL GALLERY - Keith Williams wow thats awesome very unique & amazing talent you have.... Ill check back periodically Id love to see an all open knotted Illuminknotty 😉 hope you do one... keep up the great work... Cheers
wonderful
👍🏼
Wow, it looks like a wooden moon or an asteriod. I wonder how it would look if the final panels were instead bigger chunks of wood with much larger knots.
Rouverius I may try that...I have plenty of bigger knots left.
Like it! 😀 I was going to ask you if the domino event was all in one take. That was great! 👏 Can't wait for your next project and vid! Pam
pam carr The domino scene took way longer than it should have. I had to keep adding length to my workbench, and I knocked it over several times before I got it all set up. Then when I finally started the video camera, it failed to fall all the way twice. 😀
I'm glad you stuck with it, it looked great! 😜💨
Dang, you left that cameraman inside
Mayank biu It was just my little brother.
i have thought on making something like the in the past, but i dont know how to calculate the bevel of the triangles. Do you have a video on how you came up with the? id love to give it a try. Such a cool project, nice job! Thank you!
My next video will be the "how to" of a 5" diameter ball. Check out this website geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp They have a dome calculator. You just enter the radius you want and it will give you the triangle side lengths and dihedral angles. It is even color coded. This calculator is for domes but the sphere has the same angles.
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams Great! looking forward to it. Ill take a look at the website too. Thank you!
Awesome craftsman ship! If I was allowed one question, it would be how do you figure out the angle of the glue side on the triangles? I’ve thought for it quite a bit, but cannot even find an answer in the net! Anyways, cool piece of work!
Hey Jordan, check out this dome calculator geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
this is so much crAzy, man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
👍🏼
Brilliant acting and montage to
Darius Varanavicius Thank you. 👍🏼
Is this an icosodocecahedron? Outstanding work!
I have heard it called a geodesic truncated icosahedron. Basically the pentagons and hexagons are subdivided into individual triangles.
Love u man
Right back at ya Carl. 👍🏼 Thanks for watching.
1:17 Illuminati confirmed
Jadyn Adamson 😀👍🏼
nice!
👍🏼
Absolutely fantastic what was the angle you did your cuts please
Thanks ...Check out this dome calculator geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
Looks awesome, though I would like to see how it would look if you turned it into a smooth sphere.
Thanks, I normally make them all round. Some of the knots were larger on the back side ,so I didn’t want to take the chance of them breaking out if I sanded off the corners.
ODDBALL GALLERY - Keith Williams now I know there must be a large amount of work in these, but I would like to see the smooth sphere someday.
I may build a larger knot ball at some point.
Wow!!!
i was so scared that you weren't gonna knock them over like dominos
I knocked them down several times while setting them up. 😀👍🏼
Great idea 💡 👍 Just had a thought, if I was you I'd buy a bag of plastic eyes 👀 and wherever possible insert one into each of the knot holes 🕳 then at Halloween put it where the kid's can see it. If this doesn't scare the bejesus out of them nothing will! 💯 👍 🇬🇧
😀👍🏼
how did you figure out how many pieces you need at what angle? Awesome by the way!!!!
I did it the hard way, lots of trial and error. Check out this website. It has an calculator and gives lots of good info on geodesic design. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
Impressive! how do you find the angle?
Joe Coelho Check our this website. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
Brilliant work. Would you tell how to find the angle?

Hey! Just wanted to know what cutting saw you use
Ashish Bagree I use Dewalt 12” compound saws with mid grade Bosch blades.
I liked the video before it even started.

Do you sell your work? I cannot find a link? Your work is incredible
Hey Nancy, Thank you 👍🏼 Check out Oddballgallery.com.
Guy who collects knots
😀👍🏼 check out the “directors cut” of this video … I love my knots.
Don't know why but had to watch the short version as well. 🧐 Have you ever commented on the actual complexity of making these balls? I am thinking that, like box joints if you are only off .001 on each finger things go south rapidly. But, you seem so cavalier about making the plastic triangle etc. Can't believe it is as easy as you make it seem. Have you done an overview of your shop? Guess I need to look at your prior postings more. I found this one much more interesting because it was knot (🙄) turned. Probably because I am not a lathe guy.
Bill in Tustin Hey Bill I appreciate both views.😀👍🏼 I’m kind of new with this video thing so I’m just trying to figure out what people want to see. You are right , a little bit off on 180 pieces is a lot off during assembly. I dry fit the whole thing to check for errors. The plastic template was a bit oversize just to give me a general idea where the knot was going to be on the triangle. There seems to be some interest in a shop tour so I will probably do a video on that. I am also planning on a couple of how to type videos starting with some of the more basic platonic solids (Cube, dodecahedron, Icosahedron) I have made over 100 of these balls and this is the first one that I have not turned into a smooth sphere. P.S. I lived in Costa Mesa for a few years back in the day👍🏼
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams Where are you now?
I think the truth of the complexity is given away in the stops on the two (count 'em TWO) mitre saws. I went back to the first video to look at that one more time. Did you make some caliper type adjustment for the angle on the mitre as well? Not the 120's but the under cut? Trying to dial that in had to be challenging.
Bill in Tustin Central Illinois
Bill in Tustin When I first started building these I used a digital protractor but now I just have a piece of quarter inch Lexan with the angle cut on it and I just hold it against the blade to set the miters.
What is the finish on this? It looks great
Chris Johnson It is catalyzed lacquer called Duravar
Mas vídeos así por favor :D
Estoy trabajando en algunos 👍🏼
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams muchas gracias, tus vídeos son increíbles! Saludos.

Muy bueno ese proyecto pero tienes que ilustrar bien para saber como lo hizo es decir los cortes los ángulos el procedimiento para aprender porque yo veo esos vídeos para aprender
I am curious how strong it is. Do you think you could sit on it?
I have sat on it and I’m about 250.I have stood on similar sized spheres that I have built. This one is one of a kind so I will probably not do the stand test.😀
Nice work. What are the angles of the details?
Check out this website. It has a lot of good info on designing geo domes/spheres. The calculator will allow you to figure the triangle side lengths and angles. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
Вау вот это подгонка!!!
Спасибо. На то, чтобы все исправить, нужно время. В моем следующем видео я подробно расскажу об углах и техниках.
Out of curiosity, are you familiar with any of the sculpture work by George Hart?
I am now, just looked him up. Seems we have similar interests. Although, his work is more advanced than mine mathematically.
In welchem Winkel werden die einzelnen Dreiecke geschnitten ?
What are the angles you must use to get the inner bend on the triangles?
Seminole Space Force Check out this website it has some useful information geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
How many hours did you spend on this project?
Benjamin Mellor. About 2 weeks with the video added. Cutting each triangle individually added a lot of time. Sanding the flats took longer than I thought too.
400 million.

De cuántos grados es el corte?
How many segments and what angle are they cut at ?
You oughta make stabwood vape mods
Not exactly sure what that is.
What angle is the miter saw set at for the bevel cut?
There are two different bevel angles for this layout. They depend on the miter angle / triangle side length you use. Check out this website , they have a lot of good info on geo- design. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp
what is the angle of the cut on the triangle pieces???
My next video will be the "how to" of a 5" diameter ball. Check out this website geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp They have a dome calculator. You just enter the radius you want and it will give you the triangle side lengths and dihedral angles. It is even color coded. This calculator is for domes but the sphere has the same angles.

Knots are cool👍🏼
This project is BEGGING to have some LED lighting inside.
If I build another one of these I will use all open knot holes and give the led a try I think it would look pretty cool.
