I’ve always played with my dogs. Online there are so many mixed reviews if it’s a good thing to do with your dog it not. I’m curious on your thoughts? How do you feel about Tug of war with your working breed dog?!

  • What a beautiful relationship you have with your dogs. If you don’t mind me asking how did you learn to work with them so well? I’d LOVE to learn to communicate with my dog to a similar degree.

  • Doing a great job with your training tips! Yes I play tug of war with mine too. I think it helps a lot.

  • "Let go" is so helpful not in just tug. We also tought Tifa that when I pull, she shakes, when she pulls and I give in she doesn't shake. And also when we say "ow" she stops. Sadly, no ropes for Tifa as she wants to eat them whole. She has a rubber ring thing we tug with. And a K9 bite sleeve.

  • We love tug of war as well... Good exercise, training tool... As my ages, her tug not as physically strong, however her sheer joy is 110%, I yield my side just enough to allow her to win...

  • I was just watching reruns of The Outlander (for the third time) and the episode came up titled “Freedom and Whiskey.” There was reference to the poem by Robert Burns. I immediately thought of your Mals. ❤ I always thought their names were so cute, but never realized there was a meaning to it. Love them!! I have a MAL too. Best girl in the world. Smart as a whip and understands everything.

  • I play tug of war with my Mal. She also plays tug of war with other dogs at the dog park. She has yet to loose even though most dogs she plays with are 50 to 100% bigger than her. She just refuses to let go. They eventually give up.

    • Whiskey seems to be really good at modulating the power he exerts. He can gently carry a container of eggs. He’s a big boy for a mal at almost 100 lbs and I doubt she weighs much more. I suspect he’s being careful and also taking turns in tug of war. He seems to understand the nuance of the game that he’s supposed to let her pull him when it’s her turn. I’m constantly amazed by mals’ intuitiveness and problem solving skills. Your mal probably knows he doesn’t need to go easy on you.😊 Another difference could be if your mal does decoy training-I could be wrong but I don’t think Whiskey does that.

  • I do play tug o war with my Labrador. But man, if it was up to him, we'd be playing 24 7. It gets tiring for me but not for him.

    • Do you have a Belgian Malinois? I think there are plenty of dog breeds who don’t have a strong desire/need to bite and tug. Similarly there are plenty who aren’t interested in playing fetch with a tennis ball.
