SIG THE AMAZING DUTCH SHEPHERD

One of the best things about Dogumentary TV is not only the great dogs I meet but the great people who care for and love the dogs. Rochelle is a wonderfully engaged and active owner of Sig, a three year old Dutch Shepherd. If you know anything about Dutch Shepherds you know they are full of energy. They will need a tremendous amount of mental and physical activity to be happy. Rochelle and Sig are living that life.

  • I rescued a Dutch Shepherd two years ago. He will be 5 in December. He has brought me joy beyond measure. Along with tears and frustration. He's so smart. He's unbelievably brave. But he needs so much exercise and attention. When I was younger, I raised and raced sleddogs, so I understand Ace. But I am no longer young! I will tell you, if you are willing and able to put in the time, you will never be sorry you have a Dutchie. If you can't give the hours, don't get one. You will both be miserable. From October through May, we enjoy hiking the Georgia mountains. In summer we suffer. But he still needs walks, and training when it's 110 outside. I wish I was younger, but I can't remember life without my Ace. He is the guardian of my little farm, and the thief of many a freshly baked biscuit!!

    • hello, nice story. Can I ask you how old you are? 😊

    • @@aqslke sure. I'm 67. High mileage. I damaged my back, and knees, chasing behind sleddogs on the hills of Scotland, Iowa, and Maine. I have arthritis. I have 6.5 acres here in GA. Ace is my pal. But he needs his work regardless of weather or my arthritis!!

  • The Dutch Shepherd is one of my favorite breeds and probably my favorite breed that not everyone is aware of. I always hope that the Dutchie remains below the radar. These dogs are extremely healthy and once a dog gets too popular in the US, we usually start seeing bad breeding and health issues begin to creep in. The Dutch Shepherd is a phenomenal breed but they usually require a lot of time and people with energy. Hopefully they stay under the radar and we don't hear too much about them. Sig is beautiful, congratulations.

    • You're absolutely right. When American breeders "discovered" the popularity of German Shepherds, they damn near destroyed the breed in their rush to make money producing as many puppies as they could. One problem they caused was that sloping back you started to see so often. It's only fairly recently that order was reestablished and in general an American-bred GSD today is pretty much the real deal. I'd hate to see that process being repeated with Dutch Shepherds which are so much more intense, and could become quite dangerous if they ended up in the hands of unscrupulous breeders.

    • @@leonaessens4399 The really big consideration is that the Dutch Shepherd is a very healthy breed, any sort of popularity usually brings health concerns. I do not own a Dutch Shepherd but I definitely would not try and attract more people to the breed. If people are truly looking for a dog with its capabilities, they'll find it.

  • I have a Dutchie she was abandoned and my boyfriend found her at his place if work. She was very timid and it took months for her to trust my family! Now she is the most loyal sweet dog we could have ever asked for. Such a wonderful companion.
