What's the best way to find a cactus in Minecraft? If you answered "Build a supercomputer and check every single seed in existence on a supercomputer running a program that takes over 1 year to finish" then you'd be correct!

CORRECTION
I don't know how I missed this, but the naive approach definitely wouldn't require 200,000 seeds per second, I meant 200,000 seeds per day. Not really a big issue but a couple people pointed it out.

When “i” or √-1 was first introduced in 1545, everyone back then thought it was just a nice curiosity without any practical application or even straight up nonsense. We know now that it’s one of the building blocks behind how the internet works (FFM) and the basis for quantum physics but back then it was considered practically useless by almost everyone Give it a few centuries (or a few decades seeing how fast technology is advancing) and a use will come out of this outside of Minecraft Edit: Actually considering the nature of the Information Age today there’s probably already 10 projects that uses the code of this to do other stuff

  • There's probably code reasons why it can't get anywhere near this, but very naively, theoretically, since each chunk can generate up to 10 cacti, and each cactus can be up to 3 blocks tall, and up to 4 chunks could bleed into each other, there could be a natural cactus somewhere out there in the Minecraft multiverse that's 120 blocks tall. Even though that's probably way off, I am interested in what the current theoretical upper bound for Big Cactus is.

    @kleine.kleeblatt@kleine.kleeblattАй бұрын
    • Theoretically, a Cactus could commit a Nomad and travel from a chunk to a different one due to terrain always cock-blocking it, adding to the cactus being potentially 255 tall

      @Therevengeforget@TherevengeforgetАй бұрын
    • I don't think so, if that were the case then there'd always be an average of 10 cacti per chunk, but it seems like if the second attempt fails, it gives up.@@Therevengeforget

    • from what i understood from the code, each cactus also tries to generate 10 times before giving up, but it can choose air blocks to try to generate in because the code doesn't know what the terrain looks like until it checks if a block is valid for a cactus. I didn't illustrate that in my video for the sake of simplicity though so I can see the confusion

  • So, ignoring the trivialities of such as the seed existing, what is the hypothetical highest cactus that could ever generate? Can failures to generate cause cacti generation to navigate multiple chunks? Are there any structures that include cacti to potentially stack standard cacti generation on? Has cacti generation changed at all in different versions in a way that would make different heights possible? What about any April Fools update things like Snapshot Infinity?

    @FlatlandsSurvivor@FlatlandsSurvivorАй бұрын
    • its like theoretically possible that all 8 surrounding chunks could generate every cactus in the center of the 9th center chunk that the center chunk also generates to be really big and from a sand block at the bottom of a ravine at y=1 and create a sky limit cactus but the chances of that existing are so close to 0

Minecraft Java edition is... made in Java. and Java's RNG is actually a pseudo RNG, so it's not truly random, you can get back the same "random" numbers by setting the seed of the RNG, just like how you can get back the same world by setting the world seed. I don't know much about seed cracking since I only do plugins which is net Minecraft server, and not mods or whatever, which would be net Minecraft world
