CNN’s Danny Freeman has new details about the two people who survived the Baltimore bridge collapse and an Uber driver who narrowly missed being caught up in the tragic event. #CNN #News

  • The most incredible thing to me is that the guy who fell 185 feet somehow managed to not slam into, or get slammed by, a part of the bridge.

    • Even falling 185 feet would kill most people. You’d probably hit the water at 60 mph. Unbelievably he survived.

      @Quahogger@QuahoggerАй бұрын
    • That's because he didn't fall 185 feet straight down unimpeded. He rode a massive object into the water. That object didn't free fall, either. Some parts swung down, more than they fell.

Now, the wives are suddenly single mothers with mouths to feed, scrambling to figure out a way to pay the bills while in a state of shock and grief. Yes, I know that around the world, accidents or illness robs families of their breadwinners every day. That doesn't mean this is any less tragic 💔

  • In the mid 1960s, we lived in Northern N Jersey and one of our dear friends / neighbors was a family whose father was a manager at Sea Land who helped invent the container shipping cargo system in the 1950s / 60s. His son (my bestie friend from those days) also ended up in a similar capacity in the shipping biz, prior to retiring a few yrs. ago. I bet the elder dad probably didn't envision how big these loads would become; I haven't been in touch w/ his son for years, so I have no way to get his "take" on all these issues.

  • This is so horrible. I never like crossing bridges because you hear of these horrible stories. I do know one thing i would find out why that ship lost power and how it was maintained before traveling on water where bridges are. These men that died and their famlies need answers to how this happened. That poor man that lost his relatives. It's just a miracle many more didn't die.

    @jimw1615@jimw1615Ай бұрын
    • It might be able to lift one container from ship or a small 20’ piece of the truss after it has been cut away. That’s about it.

      @HeatherRose2023@HeatherRose2023Ай бұрын
    • This is gonna be tricky I think, because a lot of those marine heavy lift cranes if you look at them are for lifting things up from underwater, and they straddle the load because it's usually underwater. Lifting heavy, from one side, in the water is much harder to do because it causes the crane boat to flip. They need a crane/oil derrick that can sink to the bottom for more support.

  • No bridge dolphin protection They would of saved the bridge. According to the AASHTO bridge design specifications, a dolphin is a protective object that may have its own fender system and that is usually circular in plan and structurally independent from the bridge. Their main function is to protect adjacent structures from the impact of a vessel.

  • I cannot understand how cruise liners and in this case, this massive cargo ship loaded with 10,000, 200ft long containers are allowed to maneuver into and out of the port without the help of tugboats??? How come no thoughts about this from journalism and people managing the Baltimore ports.

    @francotabone4047@francotabone4047Ай бұрын
    • That port and many others have specialist pilots who drive boats in and out of the harbor. The problem here doesn’t appear to be that particular local pilot, it’s that the ship lost power, possibly twice, at a critical steering moment. From what has been released from the investigation, they called out for tugboat help once steering was compromised but it all happened in a few minutes time.

  • The force that hit that bridge was strong, I leave in Dundalk about 8 minutes from this bridge driving, and I felt like this was a big storm or tornato the windows of the house felt like shutters like they were going to break for the force of the wind and some of my neighbors felt like an earthquake magnitud four, the houses shaked.. I imagine the harbor tunnel at 95 probably has been demage but nobody talk about it. This was like an earthquake magnitud around our neighborhood also 895 tunnel structure probably has beeen demage by the force of the impact. I hope transport Administration can inspect this tunnels.

    • From all the stuff I've watched and read, it's because they threw it in reverse when they realized they couldn't stop the direction is was going, in an attempt to stop the ship. Now I'm now expert by no means but that's what all the things I've seen and read say

      @johngillon6969@johngillon6969Ай бұрын
    • This is caused by 'wet stacking'. Look it up for more information. Essentially there is more fuel injected into the engine than it can reasonably burn under the given circumstance. Someone pinned the throttle in an attempt to provide reverse thrust.

  • Do these ships have a back up system to use in case of a power loss???

    @robertlange5587@robertlange5587Ай бұрын
    • As far as I know about ships, the answer to that is a *sort of* yes. They have backup power for smaller systems, like communications, lights, reduced steering, etc - but if the cathedral engines that power the propellers go out, there's not usually backup engines to keep them turning.

      @HallimarRathlornStudios@HallimarRathlornStudiosАй бұрын
    • Yes, but it takes 30 seconds or more to start up generators, from what I understand.

      @goobernoodles@goobernoodlesАй бұрын
    • @@goobernoodles Yeah, that's true, too. I'm just a hobbyist who takes a lot of interest in ships, so don't quote me, of course, but my guess as to what happened her was that the ship's engines failed somehow, and because there was a converging channel to the starboard side, the ship started to veer to the right and wasn't able to course-correct. Given how small the margin of error that was allowed by the bridge for passing ships, just a few degrees of uncontrolled turn would have been more than enough.
