Turning Baby Rattles from Maple wood - quick woodturning project
A baby rattle can be a pretty quick and simple project - you don't need any real hollowing skills and it can be made with small scraps of wood, some glue, and some rice. It's a pretty straightforward process; the only part that's at all tricky is getting a good fit when you attach the handle to the bulb. Aside from a tiny bit of rough hollowing, the turning is mostly just spindle turning and you can embellish the rattle as much or as little as you like. You could also make a bigger version as maracas and try something other than rice inside to get different sounds.
Still no commentary (yet), but I did include some subtitles with a little extra info about what I'm doing in certain parts. Maybe you'll actually hear me speak in the next one (my first attempt was a disaster, so you won't be seeing that one).
That baby will have VERY BIG HANDS!
Great video, thanks a lot, really clear and beautiful work.
Well done! Wonderful rattles! This is much better than Chinese plastic!
Amazing skill👍🇮🇩
Amazing job!!!
Thank you!!
Clever use of the wire woodburner to hide that seam!
Thanks! Yes, that is a very handy trick for hiding a seam. Thanks for watching!
I see so many KZheadrs with Robust toolrests on non-Robust lathes. I also use them on my Jet lathe, and there are none better. Why doesn’t every lathe maker learn from this and copy the best??
Chad, you do nice work, but I would love to hear you comment on what you are, and maybe give us some measurements, so we can give it a try. Thanks for sharing & see you next time
Hi Barb! Thanks for the kind words! If you want to give it a try, just do it... I don't measure anything. If I need two parts to fit, I just use calipers or trial-and-error to make them fit - their nominal size is inconsequential. Make a comically gigantic version. Make the tiniest one you can. Make any size in between. Mess one up and start over - or improvise a way to make it work. It's YOUR vision and YOUR work that matters. You might find a way that works better for you. That said, I do plan to actually start adding commentary as I go. My first attempt at it was not particularly great, but I'll be trying again for the next video. Hopefully, it will go better. Thanks so much for watching!
Looks great, what you had used to give a finish? Polish, wax or something else?
I used Shellawax and beeswax for the finish. Thanks for watching!
Can you use Shrimp Fried Rice ?
I'd probably go with chicken fried rice, just in case someone has a shellfish allergy.
What was all the band saw work at the beginning?
I was cutting the blanks for the rattles from some round spindle blanks.
@@ChadEamesWoodWorks the rip cuts are what puzzled me. Anyway, very nice work.
I was just quartering the piece to get skinny pieces for the handles trying not to waste too much wood. Thanks for watching!
Such a great job, very smooth, Babies will love it, thanks for sharing your video,,don't forget to check out my latest video, segment Canister set, Gene
Why use epoxy when you could easily use something less toxic. Nice rattle though
Epoxy is faster, better in this case, and isn’t toxic when cured.
