  • In reply to the question about sweating and moisturizer: I realized that (at least in my case) it was because I was applying after a hot shower, so my body was still trying to eliminate heat. To combat this I started finishing my showers cold, which isn't as bad as you might think because you can slowly lower the temp towards the tail end of the shower, both benefitting your skin and using less energy to make hot water.

When I do pop them they go away quickly and don’t scar. I don’t know if my skin is just weird but I’ve seen this numerous times. I do wait to pop them until they come to a head and do it as cleanly as possible.

    • Your hands might be dirty and if you try popping your pimple, you can easily infect the open wound. Also, the force when popping a pimple can scar the skin around it or create a deeper scar. I’ve done it to a big zit and it left a dented scar compared to zits I’ve left alone that leave colored scars (which can be treated with ointment).

      @nelly430@nelly4302 жыл бұрын
    • Same! But it doesn't apply to all pimples. Most pimples are better left alone, but some only go away in relatively short time if you pop them. Provided you clean the area before and after, and keep it the hygienic, of course.

  • I’m seeing the dermatologist this week. I’m in my 50s and I spent my childhood and teen years (1970s and early 1980s) out in the sun along the Gulf Coast. Many, many sunburns. No sunscreen, ever. We always had a spray can of Solarcaine in the house because everyone in the family got sunburns in the summer - thank you, Scottish ancestry. I’m lucky to be in a family of people who don’t wrinkle much; my parents didn’t start to have wrinkles until they were in their 70s. However, both parents have had melanoma. My doctor is concerned about a spot on the back of my neck. Unfortunately, he was concerned about this last September and the soonest I could get in to see a dermatologist was this coming week. I hope it isn’t something that has been spreading over the past five months… The question I have is whether or not there is anything I can do as an adult who had dozens, if not hundreds, of sunburns early in life. I use sunscreen all the time I’m outdoors now, but I know that damage has already been done. I’ll be asking my new dermatologist about this, that’s for sure.

  • As a teen (late 60’s early 70’s) I had the normal amount of acne. I learned early on that it was more beneficial for me to pop them and get the core out so the backed up oil in the pore could drain. Usually oil would drain out for a day or two and they would heal up and be forgotten. They healed much faster than letting them to continue festering on my face. I never had any scarring or secondary infections of any kind, and let’s face it, pimples are infected pores that have gotten clogged up. On the other hand I had a friend that had systic acne that would swell up and scar without doing anything to them. He quickly learned he could NOT pop his form of acne. Eventually doctors prescribed him proper medicine to take that took care of it all but not until his face was permanently scarred by his type of acne. Back in those days there wasn’t much on the market to treat acne really. Ultimately I think it’s up to each individual as to what step to take when it comes to pop or not to pop your pimples. I feel fortunate not to have had the scarring kind of acne so popping worked best for me or seemed to anyway. Just an FYI

  • Can verify Wind Burn is a thing. There were about 3 years in my current area where the winters were cloudy, overcast, but extremely windy and cold (coastal Texas so.. y'all know we've been getting those winter storms sometimes). Working the drive thru, that faces North, proves it. The wind whips in that window full force. You can protect your face but you still have to hold the window open with your hands and pass stuff out. First year this happened I got such wind burn - and it is a combination of dry skin and cold weather, plus you're washing / aggravating your hands more and drying them out more by stripping the oils and then scratching with paper towels. It's horrible. A sunburn will eventually heal mostly on its own, imo, but wind burn.. even using lotion to try to alleviate the dryness burns like lava. It's difficult to handle and treat..

  • Note: If you piercing is _not_ infected, don't clean it with alcohol or use antibiotic ointment on it. Alcohol will dry the skin, and ointments block oxygen, making the piercing take longer to heal, giving you more opportunity to get an infection. Soap and water are enough, and soaking it with a mild saline solution are good for softening up the normal buildup around the piercing if it's significant. If it gets infected, then the rules can change, and if it's bad enough, see your doctor or NP about it, all like Dr. Shah said. I will note that while it's debated among piercers, a _mild_ antiseptic like Bactine (benzalkonium chloride solution) is probably safe to use in moderation on a normal healing piercing, as long as you're not known to be allergic or sensitive to it (it's in a LOT of stuff). It usually also contains lidocaine, which can help with pain, burning, or itching in the early days of healing. Only use the liquid stuff, though, not the gel. If a piercing falls out and needs to be reinserted, I'll swab over the skin in the area with povidone-iodine (Betadine) to make absolutely sure I don't introduce anything into the wound channel, but washing it with soap should be fine, too. I keep iodine around for first aid and emergency water purification, anyway. Jewelry gets cleaned with alcohol before reinserting.

  • I’ve had acne for over 4 years now and finally went to the dermatologist about 2 years into having acne. In the beginning of my treatment I was extremely stressed and not even the medication and topicals i was put on helped. I was on them for about a year and even though I saw improvement I was not overly happy with my skins improvement. At the time I had no self love and lacked confidence but started loving myself more and more becoming less stressed. That was when I started seeing huge improvements in my skin and came to the conclusion that my acne was also caused by stress along with oily skin. Moral of the story, if you are stressed and have acne, do your best to not let it affect your mental health and perception of yourself.

    • Same here. Late 2021 and early 2022 was a very stressful part of my life and it's when I started losing hair and developing acne after going through all my teenage years acne free. I am thankfully in a better spot now recovering and my skin is returning to how it was pre 2021. However, stress has taken it's toll on my appearance and I look visibly older than a year ago. Hopefully the negative changes on my person will be undone in due time after adopting several healthier habits.

  • Thank you for talking about Asian (Alcohol) Glow in this video!! As an Asian with Asian Flush, I've grown tired of explaining to peers why I don't drink and why I'm unable to.

    • Thank you Melia for asking and Dr Shah for answering! I don't drink alcohol as I don't like the taste most times (I can tolerate the sweet ones--but take out the alcohol and I'll like it better, and it's cheaper!) and hated how it makes me feel afterwards even more. I didn't know it was a thing until now (apparently it was known 2016-2017) and I've now use this as a scientific weapon to push back some pushy elderlies and people who reckon they can't trust people who don't drink *rolls eyes*.
