When “regular people” think of custom cars, they think of West Coast Customs, thanks mainly to MTV’s early 2000s hit show, “Pimp My Ride.” Each week, West Coast Customs transformed beaters into cartoonish reflections of their owners’ personalities, brimming with wacky mods. Nearly 20 years later, West Coast Customs is still on TV, they’ve expanded around the globe, and they have their own roller coaster! How has a shop famous for installing monitors on every flat surface available remained relevant for so long? How did they get there in the first place? And why do so many celebrities turn to them for custom work? Join James Pumphrey for the lowdown on the world’s most famous auto shop, West Coast Customs.
Props to Guilherme Lopes (@_glopes on the gram) for the dope editing.

    • There are videos on here of former guests on the show and they said it was all staged. MTV would rent a house to film the fake introduction part with Xzibit and the cars were decorated to look worse than they were and the producers would decide what theme the car was going to decorated. There was a pimped out van with a jewelery maker startion installed which was sold after the show and bought by popular KZheadr Tavarish who fixed it up and gave it to his friend Hoovie as a joke.

I always thought the show was fun, and having a clue about cars knew most of the mods wouldn't last, and probably fall out after going over a few speed bumps too fast. Except the one where some young guy wanted the car restored for his mother, and the car was sooo bad, basically two halves welded together, they sourced a new car for them and modded that. I took that sucker off every time I went somewhere (they had cases to store the faceplates in which was important to keep them scratch-free). The funny thing was that removing the faceplate didn't stop thieves from stealing the head unit. In fact, back then only pricey head units had removable faceplates, so thieves would actually target them. They'd steal the unit without the face, figure out what model it was, and then contact the manufacturer to get a replacement face. This eventually turned into a whole thing where head units had unique codes and yadda yadda yadda... does anyone even bother to steal head units anymore?

    • Those shows are basically soap operas set in a custom shop. Hollywood producers often only seem to understand drama. If you like cars, you study and learn to build cars. If you like drama, you study and learn to make movies and TV shows. So most specialized activity becomes a setting for drama, not a study of that activity. It's why I often hate movies about things I like, they rarely have better than a superficial appreciation of the thing that's supposed to be the draw for me.

    • I remember watching this show a couple times as a young car enthusiast and pretty much instantly realized it was a bunch of cheap s*** with huge branding (donated by the advertisers as a write-off), then put together poorly in a $1500 car that would be better off in a scrapyard--- so if the project was an utter failure and the car burned to the ground, the show had a whopping $1,501 to lose. And then cue tons of unnecessary man-drama and a fake unachievable deadline.. Pure shit. As someone that actually took the time to learn the skills of the trade, the show disgusted me. I abhor the vast majority of what comes out of Hollywood, and this show was made entirely of that. They took a decent shop and techs with proper skills, and cheapened the craft into harlequins.

Just watched a video the other day how one of their $80,000 bikes are now worth $3,000-$8,000. I called them "Cake Decorators" because they never truly made a "badass" bike. Some mechanics, think one named Rich (but maybe he also went to a pawn show store to work) you later saw in either or both. I think that Dwayne guy who was a piece of shit, bald and 2nd man with Boyd. I mean, production companies can't edit so many terrible things about him when they didn';t film it first so it's not like they just showed him to be bad. Anyway, you saw them in Pimp my Ride and CHip Foose his show which aired back then as well. Chip Foose worked for Boyd Coddington I believe, at least they had a big rivalry.

  • Paying employees less than minimum is inexcusable, especially considering Ryan (the owner) is racking in millions. There is no way I would reward a business like that with my business. Not that I’m rolling in cash but anyone that is should go somewhere else (to someone that does quality work, while also paying their workers a good salary).

    • Wage theft in the US is more money per year than all other theft combined, $15 billion, excluding police asset seizure which I believe is the second highest coming in around $3ish billion. In 2014 the police seized more property than was actually reported stolen.

    • to build on what your saying; if i found out that the troopers working on my car were not getting paid right, i would really be worried that they wont do a good job because the incentive isnt there, and i dont blame them. minimum wage means minimum effort. Also if an owner steals from their employees they are probably jacking up the prices beyond whats reasonable. Its just bad news all round. Besides, getting a $100k car is always gonna turn heads. You dont need to be an idiot and ride in something that really just looks weird and different. I saw west coast do a Rolls-Royce for Justin Bieber, and it looks horrible. From the work ive seen there, bad wages or not, its just not worth it.
