I've watched all the goals on set pieces from the season 22-23 in La Liga, Premier League and Serie A. It was remarkable how many goals were scored after a deflection in 1st zone. Almost every time the defenders are watching the ball and leave their man or zone free... Important to have always 1 player (sniper) running to the 2nd post. I'm 54 years old. I was a player at Charlton Athletic FC from 14 to 16 years of age. I played non league football til the age of 30 and then went on to coach and manage teams ranging in age from under 7's to mens. I have realised and told all my team mates and players 90% of goals are due to a lack of defensive discipline. I always told my players 'even if you are going to give up a goal make them earn it. Don't let them have it. The problem is (especially with midfielders and particularly central midfielders) players in professional football are to focused on maintaining a 'defensive shape' and watching the ball rather than picking up an individual and not allowing that individual to get away from you. I always said to my players 'I've never seen a ball put itself into the goal. It takes a player to put the ball in the goal. Stay with your player until the play is dead. Think! the player with the ball is looking for your player. Make sure the player you are marking is not a good option'. Sorry for the long diatribe but I see undisciplined defending at even the highest levels of football and it annoys me to no end.
this is litteraly what i see with united, they try to keep a shape... with leads to let the midfield runners free, not picking up 2nd balls,... sad stuff
