Another trick you can use, is to create a "standard" (non-administrator) user account for yourself and use that instead of the default user account, which has admimistrator-level privileges on your OS. Viruses piggyback on the accounts that activate them and as they all seek to modify the Kernel, using an account that doesn't have admin privilege prevents them from doing any harm.
Great advice. About to set up a new lappy for my 74yo mother and she has a tendency to install games but forgets to unlock-click all the "install this, too" buttons and winds up with all kinds of junk and some malware. This will at least keep her from the worst of the worst. Thanks

Yes windows defender has been getting better in terms of signatures, but you also have to dive more deeply in cybersecurity - the most important of antivirus is behavioural detection, and it doesn't seem that windows defender is doing great in this case.
For BASIC protection it's enough
Today's threats are not basic anymore and they're becoming more dangerous every day.

@@NarinderxBali It's not that big of a deal but ok.
Thing is if an AV product is not having an impact on the PC performance then it is in fact not actually doing anything and this goes for any program really, however programs are not all equal and i am sure we all know the history of Norton being a lead brick to a PC, where as AVG and Avast where the light weight champs sadly Avast has fallen along way, Even the MS anti virus has a performance impact it is just well less than the Avast one.

Ive been using Defender over the years but with the newer versions of Windows theres been enlist issues with crashes etc. I thought it was Malware but scans always come up clean even with third-party Antivirus software like Trend Micro and Bit Defender. Settings also are just as important and takes just a few minutes to setup and you don't have to pay a cent.
I think Windows Def shines by not nagging the user to constantly upgrade to a premium or paid edition of a particular AV. Dealer with older folks they aren't really ready to close the nag messages down thinking it's something that requires their immediate attention.

Yes, switching from an HDD to an SSD will definitely see a "speed increase" (lower latency) in your system. The 12 GB of RAM also helps. You made three changes to your system at the same time, I assume, and saw a speed increase. In order of influence; that would be SSD, RAM, antivirus.
