How to get Faster Internet speed when you change a simple setting
There is a BIG difference between a working internet connection and an optimized fast internet connection that is geared for speed!
Today I am going to show you a simple setting that anyone can do that took me from 150Mbps to 450Mbs.
Here are the commands you will need:
To calculate the MTU size:
ping thetechieguy.com -f -l 1492
To see the MTU size on your computer:
netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces
To set the MTU size:
netsh int ipv4 set subinterface “Ethernet” mtu=1500 store=persistent
Note:
If you are using WiFi, instead of Ethernet, use whatever the interface say eg "Wi-Fi"
To reset it in case it didn't work or you want to start again just set it back to 1500

@@DeepThinker193 no mine is 0.51 mbps
@@alizaichannel I somehow got 0.35 mbps but I think this is going to be the only time I get that low
yeah mine is sad, at 1500 i had 7.4 download and 0.92 upload. At 1492 i have download of 11.13 and ups of 1.44. 1492 is my max with following the directions. I dont know if it is my provider or my modem/router is old and needs to be replaced. but wow..........how balls.
Interesting - mine was set at 1500, but when I followed instructions and decreased to 1480 (ping at 1452+28), the download speed increased by 23% and upload speed increased 5%. Thanks for another great tutorial!
For those that don't know, there is a header of 28 (two separate of 20 and 8) that needs to be added when taking your number into account. That's why he is fine when he hits 1472 as a test. Please look it up so you have an understanding.
I believe that header depends on what internet technology you're using and how you authenticate with your ISP. Eg, PPPoE would use a different header size than PPPoA. Sometimes you can use both and gain performance by switching from PPPoE to PPPoA on your router/modem settings.
I like how technical ideas are explained using simple examples.
It takes a smart man to simplify complex things and a dumb man to complicate simple things
Wow, thank you Liron! I was able to change at my modem when I found out the number to set the MTU for my computer was. A remarkable difference it made and may I say that right now it is a Saturday night with heavy traffic time, 09:30pm. Thanks so much!
Any tips for doing this with Mac? I see that -s is the parameter for packet size. However, it seems to allow only for lower range of 2-digit numbers. Thanks.
Great video. I haven't looked at or tested the MTU for years. Now I know what to do again. Thanks for the tip. I'm a subscriber now.
Appreciate you being here 🔥
Thanks for the information, I am a hardware tech and have spoken with so many software “experts” on this issue and told nothing can be done. Well you should my smile! Most appreciated, you made my day!
Mr. Liron, I happen to stumble upon your video and found it very useful in rectifying the core problem I had with my internet. You have made a wonderful and a quint essential video.. I immediately subscribed to your channel .. Thank you very much for this video.. Looking forward to more such useful videos...
Glad it helped and thank you for being here!
On macOS the parameters for the pig command are different (typical!). You'd use ping -D -s where -D sets the don't defragment bit and -s specifies the packet size. These parameters are case sensitive.
Great video, it really works. I was getting around 460 mbps download, 27.9 mbps upload and ping 29 before. After applying the mtu settings now I am getting 519.2 mbps download 42.7 mbps upload and ping 28.❤❤❤❤

This was a great guide! 👍 . Was also quite easy for me to find the setting on my router, since I got a very similar Linksys as well 😌 .
VERY NICE. I had a starting MTU of 972, managed to get that to the base of 1500, ( ISP had throttled the speeds in our neighborhood ) so from a start of 972 MTU and download speed of 12 Mbps / upload of 1.12 Mbps to a new 1500 MTU and a new stable download speed of 62.2 Mbps upload / Upload of 17.7 Mbps :)
Great tutorial but i have a question. Should these tests and then changes be performed on a quiet line ie. without other people playing games/ surfing You tube etc? would imagine that would effect the ping rate or packet size at test. Or does it not matter. Thanks Guys.
He mentions in the video that configuring the router itself will affect all systems connected, so it may not be optimal for each device. He then says later that you can configure from your computer instead.
Okay I didn't think this would work but it nearly doubled my download and upload speed respectively. thanks for the simple video
my speed was relatively unstable before but now i reach well over 100% of the values i reached before. thank you , great tips
Thanks for the information Liron, helpful as always! Merry Christmas from Canada! 🇨🇦🎅🏼🎄🇨🇦🎅🏼🎄
I have an advice for you guys. If you are using a Network Bonding / Load Balancing Set-Up with 2 or more ISPs / WANs do try to find the best MTU while they are all in use. For instance, I have 3 WANs, all connected and bonding packages. So I did found out that 1498 (inkl. the +28) bytes where the optimal average size. So I did change every WAN-Port to 1498, after that I did change the Windows Settings to "automatic MTU" instead of entering a value. What happend was a constant Download and Upload, like I would only use 1 WAN / ISP.
Thank you very much, definitely will have it a try tomorrow. As I got problem with the lag issue, hope this can improve the lag issue. Appreciate your sharing.
I thought you did a great job of explaining this and showing, very clearly, each step. Great job. In my case, this didn't help, however, since my router MTUs were already set at the maximum. I just wanted to let you know I appreciated the clarity of your instructions. Thanks
And I appreciate you hanging out here 👍
if u set at computer-level wouldnt it follow the computer setting first?
@@jukkininth4837 yes the computer is setting the size to be sent to the router so the router doesn't change the size unless the router is set lower than the computer. Which would cause the router to limit the data speed.
Thank you I’m going to try that. I won’t get anywhere near those speeds here in Australia, the possum running on the wheel doesn’t run fast enough! Cheers😊

I run PfSense and it's simple to setup by going into the WAN settings, and I run my wifi through a switch. Your video is still very useful!
Great video. Clear to follow. Question - Is this optimization possible / necessary on extenders/repeaters too, or just on the router?

Again, another great tutorial here. How you simplify this stuff and yet give it a decent explanation is what sets you apart from a lot of KZheadr's out here doing these.
yeah, my router was luckly already had these settings done
@something I get that but think about who may watch these videos? People who probably do not have much understanding on how these things work. A little expo isnt bad as long the entire video isn't a lesson in expo. I feel like Liron does a great job of that. Talks to us like people but with the understanding most may not get it and requires a little simple talk during the process, but I get it. Some want just the steps and no banter.
