In this video we look at the benefits of fitting a type 2 SPD (surge protection device) and what type of items it can protect. It is now very common to fit a type 2 SPD in a domestic consumer unit to protect circuits from transient over voltages caused by switching inductive loads and atmospheric conditions.

  • Do I see a busbar that has plastic covers on the pins but the bar itself is naked?

    • Yes. Quite common but the busbar cover will stop ingress except to the pins from above, hence the caps

  • Can someone please explain to me why plug sockets are not acceptable in UK bathrooms? Other European countries with 240 volts have plug sockets inside their bathrooms. Is it to do with ring wiring and copper? Someone please explain this to me. Thank you.

  • I got to ask this question about these SPDs how many people in the UK have had an overvoltage surge and it has burnt out all there or even 2 or 3 electronic things they have in there houses let's say in the last 10 years nobody will fit SPDs if not a lot of people they would have to save lives not TVs and iPads and games machines what do you say to that Gary and I am not talking about the AFDDs in the same CU just the SPDs it will never happen in the real world unless the AFDDs and the SPDs are a lot cheaper also how many people do you think will run out and buy an AFDD and SPD consumer unit and pay for it being fitted

    • You can pick up an SPD kit with it's accompanying MCB etc for 20 odd quid. Definately not worth getting a new box or expensive works done just for an SPD for the vast majority of people but if you're getting a new box installed anyway & have expensive electricals like home cinema equipment (which I do) I think it's worth paying an extra 20 odd quid. Like I say though this wont be the case for most people.
