Yet it has gravity. That time slows down and space shrinks near mass is described by GR. You have only said time. Acceleration takes both.

  • ​@sparkstarter here is an experiment suggestion: vary the driving coil power input and see how it affects differently sized small pieces at various points along the copper slug surface. Use the string suspended arrangement and vary the suspension height relative to the vertically placed/located electromagnet-slug unit. What is the effect of the coil on that large piece of alum foil W/O the slugs compared to when the slugs are included? Use several different sizes of circular alum foil in the string suspension arrangement w and w/o the slugs. IMHO, the applied field of the coil makes the inner portion of the diamagnetic material [aluminum] more magnetic by inducing fields in the areas over the coil which improve the magnetic properties of the portion of aluminum that is over the slugs. The relative sizes of coil-slugs-diamagnetic material is the crux to finding the solution. A diamagnetic substance is one whose atoms have no permanent magnetic dipole moment. When an external magnetic field is applied to a diamagnetic substance such as bismuth or silver a weak magnetic dipole moment is induced in the direction opposite the applied field.   • Nice. From my own understanding, it's a form of dry electrolysis in the sense that both methods require molecule size resource gathering to be of useful application. I would think separation of aggregate in mining process could easily benefit from the use of this electromagnetic wave configuration. Liked and Subscribed.

  • I have been interested in something similar to be used to clean up brass casings from the ground. If there was enough force to pick them up, this would be a great solution vs trying to build a metal separator.

  • You should try constructing Edward Leedskalnin's PMH (Perpetual Motion Holder). It's basically an electromagnet that has been bent around in a circle such that the ends meet. Once a magnetic field is induced in it, even when the electricity is turned off the magnetic field remains within the metal ring. This can be proven via an led connected to the circuit.

  • Yes, vary the frequency and measure the force response. A spectrum is easier to use and understand. There should be specific resonances for each kind and shape of material. Electric and magnetic polarization studies of materials have been tried since earliest days, but have a new start because of low cost Arduino and control systems. The drone and stepper motor controllers can be adapted. Anything with inductance or conductivity also has characteristic decay times, so those can accept forces. Try varying the magnetic field for different alignments with the electric and magnetic fields you produce. For reading, look at "near field' methods, and for very small wavelengths "radiation" or "far field" methods. It is pretty messy, but if you concentrate on measuring the forces and movements, as you make specific changes to controls and fields, you can at least store the data and try to make sense of it. Share the data and keep improving algorithms that help you design better and better field mediated forces. The 3D acoustic levitation groups are slightly ahead right now. They can move things in 3D in precise planned "orbits" and pathways. They have not really got spin and orientation of the objects moved down. I think the electromagnetic levitation groups do that better. That is partly because magnetic fields have been used to move things for a long time. Just not by field alone. The phase controls for slow careful movements need to be precise. And you need to be able to measure small movement precisely to slowly improve the control algorithms. Interferometers are not too expensive, but those cheap camera microscopes work pretty well for getting started. The Raspberry Pi cameras can take up to a 1000 frames per second, but more and more cameras can do "regions of interest" (small areas) at faster frame rates. I have seen some that are supposed to do 200,000 frames per second. The reason for something like that is, if you use a 20 kHz pulse signal to send the force, then you need to be able to watch if you are matching the objects resonant frequencies. If you know how to use an SDR, they can digitize at 2.5 to 100 Megasamples per second, and do up to 2^22 points per FFT. You don't need that to get the spectrum of the movements as a function of the spectrum of the activating field - but it is nice to have an upside, when you don't know how far this can go. Measure,. measure, measure.. Share, collaborate, create visualizations of the data. Calculate the precise movements. Don't say "it moves". Say, it moves by 1.342 microns at 23.22 Hertz. Or share the FFTs (Fast Fourier Transforms) Copper and conductors are all diamagnetic. They can also have paramagnetic, ferroelectric and other responses to fields. But electrons move away from regions of high magnetic energy density. A magnetic gradient can push anything that has moving electrons. Free electrons. If you find some small metal rings and put them in resin, that might be a good proxy for the atomic things. In general if you use magnetic spheres, or conducting nanoparticles. We don't have a name for microparticles because people are proud of "nano". But micron sized dust is fine. I noticed that diamond dust is for sale at 60,000 grit. That is 0.5 micron. Here is a link to explain grit sizes. There are LOTS of conducting and magnetic particles. It is easier to lock into them, than to try to get all the way down to atoms and molecules in your first experiments. And staying at macro scale (centimeters and inches and millimeters) without measurements is going to be a LONG process.

  • I like language of net force but I think what is happening there is that the aluminum conducts especially foil is able to be charged and then discharged when it gets out side of the field. For instance if you crumpled up the big foil it would still act like small one but just heavier.

  • If you want to really have some fun use a second coil inside instead of a passive slug. Wrap the coil so the current flow is opposite of the outer coil but magnetic field is in the same direction. It will pull massive amounts of current and generate alot of heat fast. Be careful and good luck!

    • Usually for something like that you’d set up a regular magnet (or electromagnet) to pick out the ferrous metals and then use a non-ferrous metals magnet to sort the rest of the metals like copper and aluminium

    • @@sparkstarter the place to start would have been to build it exactly as in the book. Then try to improve on it. Not build it kind of like it was in the book. Since I don't have the book, I can't say if there's enough info to build it exactly as he did, but it's definitely not what you've built. The biggest deviation being the copper slugs instead of washers, and no laminated core! His depiction looks to be longer as well, and likely only partially filled with washers. After you've replicated, and tested his design, maybe then improvements can be made?

  • What you are doing is creating a shaded pole linear motor. The eddy currents will hold nonferrous stuff at the null point.A much easier way to separate the ferrous and nonferrous metals would be to use a series of regular ac electromagnet and have the mix pass over them at an angle. You get the metals sorted by ferrous closest to magnet, non metallic or high resistive in the middle, and nonferrous to the outside. Works great to sort scrap or mining gold from gravel.

    • I'd certainly agree that repulsion is more efficient for separating nonferrous metal than is attraction. However, I think the shaded pole analogy doesn't quite fit here. Shaded poles have just enough copper to shift phase of magnetic field through the shaded pole but not block field completely. At 60kHz, the copper washers are blocking almost all field through them rather than shifting phase.

    • No, how it works is Electromagnet 1 creates eddy currents in the copper, effect is repulsion. Electromagnet field 2 is 180 degrees out of phase with eddy currents. So magnetic field from eddy currents are attracted to Electromagnet field 2. hope that helps.

Excuse my ignorance, an electro magnet is just a more powerful magnet because electricity is involved, correct? So in essence it requires two opposing magnetic fields to attract it?

  • Why not put a handful of turns where the copper washers are, & connect them in series with the main coil, the turns carrying current in the reverse direction from the main? This way you are not expending work inducing current in the washers, you can directly drive it.

  • It seems like the copper slugs eat the magnetism up... so its not that the foil gets attracted is that the net repulsion is from the outside in, since the inside is being filtered.

    • @@sparkstarter If you have the materials and will to discover the truth i got some stuff to test for you. kzhead.info/sun/bMekoLWPcKWaiJ8/bejne.html dielectric is where magic happens. There is also a propulsion for submarines; dont know if its being used or not, but if you place a magnet in the field of a condenser, it will produce 90 degree force on the fluid passing by... also lots of experiments with seeds exposed to 3k+volts over 3 nch or something... literally put in the condenser and the growth from these seeds was changed... it grew faster, stronger, more and some mutated in proto-genes or something where it turned out as a previously extinct plant etc. I would love to experiment with rotating condenser in a magnetic field and a rotating magnet and instead of coils as pickup, you place different condensers with different dielectric materials and read the potential differences or forces exerted. Also another thing to be tested is to make a fluid battery. Have condenser charge lots and lots of lets say oil as dielectric, than you store the oil in a box and lift it up and make the stream run between 2 plates. perhaps not verry efficient, but all you would have to do is collect the used oil and recharge it again so there is never any waste.

  • if you can make a strong AC magnet, using a step down transformer, you can use a 30VA Torriodal transformer and wind a few turns of thick 1.5mm wire through it a few turns is all you need, and push this low voltage AC like 6Volts and high current like 4 to 5 amps, and direct the field against the rotating disc of your electric meter, it will influence the aluminium disc and either slow it down or speed it up, depending on the polarity of the electromagnetic field it emits, use this for education only. Inside an electric meter is a horse shoe magnet through which the disc is influenced, the idea is to induce an opposite field into this horse show magnet so that the disc starts spinning backwards, some meters have mechanism to stop them spinning back, but in the least you can stop it from spinning forward, or substantially reduce how fast it can spin in forward direction. In this experiment you can understand how meters work. So using just 30watts of electromagnetic power you can overcome Thousands of watts of actual power being metered. This will not function on new smart meters, for that you need hacking into data stream and feed low tariff.

    • Either depending on frequency and geometry. In general, low frequency will attract iron because iron is ferromagnetic. High frequency will repel iron (except in unusual geometries such as in this video) due to iron's electrical conductivity. And, of course, any frequency above DC will repel iron if iron is hot enough (above Curie temperature) where it is not ferromagnetic.

  • Imagine a cylindrical elevator with brass-plated steel caps at the head and base. Inside these caps are wiring and sensors. Would it be possible for an electromagnet to hold the weight of such an elevator if it were filled with, say, twenty people and if the shuttle was slotted inside of the magnet (as one cylinder inside another)?     • @@sparkstarter Hmm, that could take a while. Let me rephrase. Imagine a solid black cube with a hole bored through the middle. The elevator (made of steel but plated in brass) passes through the hole. The cube is a giant electromagnet. Does the magnetic force attract the steel through the brass plating? If so, would sufficient magnetic force be a danger to passengers?

    • @@somerandom7672 Not sure if you've ever scene this experiment... but with a strong enough magnetic field people could float around weightless... no danger to the people unless they had some magnetic/metal implants or something.     • Great question I should do a video on this topic... the copper slugs create a field that cancels the field of the coil, lowering the inductance. Kinda of a interesting phenomena.

  • Why don t you use laminated cores as the writer used? You know Larry wandrell used lile this configuration and his device attract both non ferrous objects and also stones.Can you try the laminated style? Thanks for sharing.

You may want to offset one of the pieces a little and also 'orbit it' around the center point of the stationary piece, using a planetary gear of sort. The latter design also can be equipped with a permanent magnet to increase the flux densities/concentrate them in a hexapolar field and ionize the conductive particles as they're moving. Ideally, you want to offset the pieces in such a maner the local magnetism would alternate between penta and hexapolar system. It could end up being a mess unless you were to acoustically stabilize the non conductive material and suck out the maglevitating metals with a vacuum.

    • @@sparkstarter The tools, two I think, were made by Maxwell Magneform for Boeing to fix small dents on airplane skins. Cheaper than dismantling inside to pound out dents. Pays for itself in reduced air drag (reduced fuel costs). However, the mechanism is a bit different. Your device will repel any large piece of aluminum or copper. Only pieces of similar size to copper disks are attracted. Next comment refers to your setup as a shaded pole linear motor. I'd think of you device more as pushing the aluminum or copper from back side. Magnetic field is expanding around perimeter of aluminum. There is little field close to copper disks. Thus when aluminum is close to disks, there is more field on back side of aluminum than on front side adjacent copper. Back field pushes aluminum towards copper where field is lower. The Maxwell Magneform machines instead use a time dependent function. Aluminum is repelled weakly for a relatively long time to build up current, the attracted hard for a very brief time.
