  • ANy of you who are old enough to remember when GPU's were integrated to the motherboard? Nvidia Nforce? If I recall that was the southbridge chipset...where the northbridge catered for RAM usb etc.

    @RAM_845@RAM_84513 күн бұрын
    • That was simply the evolution of iGPUs before the northbridge got integrated in the CPU. There's a difference between iGPU and dGPU. iGPUs don't have their own memory bus and were constrained by the memory controller of the chipset (or CPU for K8 to K10 AMD CPUs), while dGPUs have their own memory bus and memory, even if there were always low-end cards that were really barely better than ATI integrated graphics - intel's integrated graphics were absolute crap before they integrated the northbridge in the CPU aka the first gen core CPU, as they updated their graphics architecture to be finally able to cover generic media operating tasks the need of bottom range GPUs fell off, that's why AMD isn't selling such anymore, plus the fact AMD was already releasing APUs with decent capabilities. Now the Strix Halo is a chip that is worthy of being considered a replacement of more budget oriented CPUs as this thing has a massive size - we've never had APUs with such GPU proportions, what's left for intel styled integrated graphics that are meant for generic tasks. Now the memory bus is still shared, but 256 bit bus - the 7600 has a 128bit bus, the 6700XT has a 192bit one. Now the memory will be slower and shared for both CPU and GPU - so the overall performance slightly so, it's meant for notebooks after all - but that still gives it serious capabilities. Now to break some illusions - it will be quite expensive simply because a chip of such size + the needed system that would likely feature quad channel memory design will demand resources and be more bulky aswell. Still this should be way more flexible than existing solutions, another go for AMD to push Nvidia and intel out of their mobile/embedded market as the latter can't offer such combined solutions. Still we are about to see the usual "rebates" by the traditional monopolists to retain their spot in the market and not allow AMD to return their investments.

      @PremiereGameplay4K@PremiereGameplay4K12 күн бұрын
    • @@PremiereGameplay4K Nvidia would have kept selling chipsets if intel didn't integrate the northbridge in the CPU and in the meantime breaking the compatibility their previous otherwise archaic designs had regarding platform flexibility. That was the end for Nvidia chipsets and integrated graphics - AMD kept the northbridge for AM3+ so an Nvidia chipset would've been possible, but demand for Nvidia chipsets was mostly on the intel front, knowing intel doesn't make crappy CPUs only. Intel silently damaged Nvidia back then, though it's interesting how those two monopolists would play it now, knowing Nvidia is the only major chip company in the US that didn't fall into losses cause of the crashing of the chip market. Nvidia still stands cause of the monopoly they've established in AI, however Intel has been loyal to the White House for awhile and they should receive more favor cause of it.

It's perfect for someone like myself who is a casual gamer. I don't want an external graphics card. I want a system that works for indy games now, and then 5-15 years later it gets reused into a media center PC giving it a 30+ year lifespan. A computer that I can use for most of my life without any downsides. That's an amazing value proposition. The last time we had value like that was the Sandy Bridge 2nd i-series CPUs and the Nvidia 10 series. Once every decade or so a really good deal appears, as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Still there's a cut down model (those results with 32CUs, with 12 CPU cores), it will be good enough at 700$ cause you shouldn't be expecting the next GPU gen to not come with a price increase. One should be able to manufacture a powerful mini-PC for 1500$ with good thermals and a large SSD.

  • Intel states TDP is not the maximum power processor can dissipate. It is an information for CPU cooler makers to know, how to design a cooler adequate for chips, considering their actual power draw, but also things like surface area or core distribution on the die. Also, those are not intended for mainstream use anyways. Those are server CPUs, where perf/W is actually key metric. Hence if they bring enough performance to justify crazy power draw, that's more than worth it.
