Wow, did you see how good he was with that dial indicator? No? Me either.
Should be. "No? Me neither"
There's no way that's ever gonna go back in an engine and it'll run properly. There's a good reason that engine parts are cast/machined in high-tech facilities to very tight tolerances, have heat treatment, are balanced and have ground bearing surfaces etc.
Providing it isn’t put back in the engine, the repair should be sufficient.
Safety sandals to the rescue
Lololol?
It keeps getting put back in the engine, and he keeps fixing it when it snaps in half
That was my exact thinking. No measurements or references other than the ol' M-1 Eyeball. He could have at least had the motor close by. Sheeese. What gives with the "guess and by golly" method?

@@alexanderzeedagreed, there’s no way this would have functioned!
You don't repair crankshaft journals with a grinder .
The thumbs up at the end , was the icing on this cake.😂👍
And of an amazing eye! Comparators and magnetic bases are for flashy rookies showing off, anyway. 🤣🤣
With a three jaw chuck? That end journal looked to have a good 20thou runout. I do admire his talent and tenacity though.
I wouldn't trust that on anything but a yard ornament. Misaligned and short weld depths is an accident waiting to happen.
Just love the precision of the work here! Lol I’ll give it ten minutes lifespan if that.
That crank should last a long time, like another 25 hours or so.
25 minutes would be optimistic I reckon.
It comes complete with a 30/30 warranty. 30 feet or 30 seconds, whichever comes first! 😂
You're too generous. The end goal is crankcase ventilation to re-harden the crankshaft. 😂
30 seconds of vibration 2 seconds of boom
Plus the heat-treated surfaces ruined and finally the surface finish on the "bearing surfaces" was abysmal to say the least.
I’m going to say well done mate, I’m not sure what the crank is off but here’s hoping it’s a light load and not too many revs. Under the circumstances I can understand the need for a repair
It actually looks like a crank of an old single cylinder horizontal air compressor like a Worthington style. I give whatever it is about 4 minutes run time at anything over 50rpm.
Incredible! They took a broken crank and made it an out of round crank with a junk journal!
Couldn’t agree more!!! That bearing journal had to be at least 10 to 15 thousands out of round!! And using that grinder to polish the bearing journals OMG!!! good luck getting bearings to fit not that it would last long even if they did find them. That was an atrocious repair attempt!!! How to make a great canoe anchor!! lol. 😂
Hilarious
And the poor fitter has to get the mushroomn off the end of the thread
It was probably used for a steam engine max speed 80 rpm
Yeah, nice paperweight now 😅
Vibration never hurt a crankshaft...👍
and the bearings, will they like it ? 😧
Incorrect statement
@@premprakashdubey2751the comment was sarcasm
As long as it's not installed. 😂
A dial indicator and a 4 jaw chuck would have been nice, love to see it run, but excuse me if i hide behind a big tree or block of granite!
Hilarious, the responses, this engineer knows how to crank up the angst😂

Can we appreciate that he drove it across the road. After all, “time is money”😂😂
Why I didn't watch much.

Holding breath for at least 5 minutes eases the pain.
Very good, soon you will have your own space program
real precise work.
they already launch rockets and have exploded nuclear weapons while you are whining about this most fantastic use of a lathe, made in the Republic of China hahahahahhahahaa
I’m impressed at the amount of deflection in the drill bits as they recenter themselves upon contact. But hey, almost half a million views in two weeks, that bit of foolery made them a few bucks.
If ever there was a nead for a video on how not to repair a broken crank shaft, this one would be an absolute must.
Exactly. No measurements. No comparisons. No nothing but eyeballing. Good grief!
COOL PROCESS! but won't heating parts of that crank change the properties of the metal? plus it was only heated on one side if it and how about balancing and the TDC won't be exact...
I believe there is 1mm or more of misalignment, it will break again haha
Ya, not good workmanship Lot of whirling seen at far end of shaft ! Next time they will come up with Bearings ?? 😀
Hammering the crap out of it in the lathe chuck.....
No this is totaly wrong, must use Super Glue before welding....
He didnt use the skyhook once either to insure alignment
A lot of run out on the bearing surface on repaired side.
There is Saw, the killer of humans. And there is you, the killer of engines. Think about the soul of the driver
Vejam como o volante vai saltar como atleta olimpico 😂😂😂😂😂
He just changed the molecular structure of that by heating it up that high its definitely gonna brake
Why else would he torch it before continuing to mill it? Must have been to ruin the temper so he could mill it more easily. Perhaps they send it off for heat-treating and final milling after roughing it out in this workshop?
Its part of betting machine. They bet how long it will work. This is the best quality company, because its pure random.
Love the safety shoes.
Total BS. You can see at 20:58 the crank journal next to the welding is clearly not running true. This thing is going to vibrate itself to pieces within minutes. I hope this guy didnt charge anything for this crap.
NO ONE should EVER except the Re-hashed outcome of this job, it'll bust and potentially cause a serious incident!!!!!!!🤬👎
Come on! It’s genius. This is primitive stuff admittedly but where it might be impossible or too expensive to source a replacement, this is brilliant stuff.
@@AdrianShawDrummer- No. It’s an attempt to be a genius. The method used is actually pretty good in terms of the design. The implementation is not accurate enough. Far too little attention spent on run out, or the overall length. If done to the dimensions of a drawing - okay. The final crankshaft is not going to run true on its bearings, if it even runs at all. I still have doubts about the metallurgy - steel can be welded yes, but in doing so the localised heating and then cooling creates internal stress. Ideally a component welded this way needs heating and slowly cooling to relieve the heat stressing. Or cryotreatment with liquid nitrogen. Either way, no attempt to relieve welding stress has been done, the accuracy is suspect - job is therefore highly likely to break once again, if the crankshaft even fits the engine again.
I believe it’s accept, not except.. but I’m no mathematician.
😮😮🎉🎉@@AdrianShawDrummer
U r 100% right. The guy never put an indicator on the journals. He left a sharp corner where shaft joins crank. You can see the shaft running out .060” or so. Not in America!
Definitely polishing a turd... Wonder how long it lasted to create a ticking time bomb though.
Since there's no quality control in the W/Shop , it shows there are a lot of mistakes, crankshaft concentercity is unacceptable, and usually, crankshaft shaft is hardened and by using torch for heating to soften the material for easy machining then crankshaft must be hardened back .
Maybe they hardened it back after this machining, I hope 😅
this is just some staged stuff to make a video its a money grab ! would like to see that crank in a running motor
Se a peça maciça quebrou. Imagina essa com alguns milímetros de solda.
Even if it only lasts 30 minutes it’s still impressive what they can do with relatively low tech tools. I mean no I wouldn’t do it that way, definitely need to at least indicate the stuff in a re harden but I still find it somewhat impressive
It was a scraped crankshaft to make a video with,,, who in hell ever use it with all the rust on the rod journal with out turning it down
hahaha he measured the shaft length a bit like 'aaah this is about right' 1:22 ... holding the broken pieces 'a bit into place'
I'd give it a go. It's for a slow revving Lister engine, not a high revving Hemi.
Using an angle grinder to polish the journals yeah that crankshaft will last probably less than 5 minutes before it spins a bearing or wipes it out.
wtf. that crank is still junk. i love the hand grinding of the bearing journals. wow.
That crank is junk. Angle grinder on the main journal 🤣

Comes with a full 90 seconds manufacturer’s warranty
Should’ve “shit canned” that crank and bought a new one. You’ll forever be changing bearings until eventually the entire motor is good for nothing but a boat anchor or scrap.
Welding metal that is still attached to the chuck isn't a good idea - probably wreaking the lathe motor. Well, it looks like this is securing "work for life" because I bet it has to come back in to get "fixed" again.
the way he polished up those journals in the end .🤣😂 .
All the journals are undersize the keyway is not indexed any longer. The connecting rod radial runout is bad. Who takes a grinder to crank journals?
Journals? They use diary.... clearly Keyway? That was an industrial street... Runout? They transported in with a motorcycle im sure the sent it out via motorcycle as well. Grinder? Well most cranks are ground!
Thats a beautiful doorstop!
Taking an angle grinder to a journal? New one on me
So this was clearly just made for viewing pleasure.

Cracking job. It’ll last seconds before it shakes the engine apart.🤣🤣🤣
I get why this was done, but there is ton of things to improve. A) welds, probably shield welding would be better, but there is need to focus on equal penetration, you recive things out of ballance with uneven welds even after machining, also i would assume deeper welds would help, as i would not want to stand beside it, in case it would crack again with flywheel on. B) journals can be done and polished, but measurments are key, and even approach on sandpaper to do it evenly, shoelace withwater sandpaper, or better drill hole with little smaller diameter in wooden block thickness of journal. cut in hadt and secure with hinge

The crank was clearing cut, I bet this thing was cut on purpose just to make the video and the crank will never actually be used. So no reason to care if it needs heat treated again.
Now it is junk! ... but hey....like the "Star Wars" Jawa-Background-Talks during the brutal treatment of that once fine crank:...." Uhh-Tidi!"
I can only imagine what our machinist would be screaming if I would use a cutting torch, a grinder and a welder ( that had no visible ground clamp on the work piece which means the the ground was going through the tail stock) would be screaming
Butchery….
Well to be honest lister made a lot of engines. So an old lister 1.5 hp hit and miss engine might be fine with this.
What levels of wear are respected, does the material still have the same resistance if it has been warmed up too much?
