I Accidentally Bought a Bronco Raptor
I bought a Bronco Raptor - is it the most capable, turn-key overland rig available on the market today? Running 37 inch BFGoodrich KO2's from the factory, locking front and rear differentials, sway bar disconnect and a very punchy motor - I think it's hard to beat! But will it still run at 100,000 miles? I guess we'll see!

Congrats, Bronco Raptor is the coolest 4x4 I’ve ever seen 😁
I think so too!
I have just over 21k miles on my Bronco Raptor and it’s been perfect. I have a smile on my face every minute I’m behind the wheel. Take a look at the PACS drawer system from AAL before you go goose gear. The PACS drawer pivots so you don’t lose access to the tire jack and storage area under the rear floor. Has mounting points on the top if you order the mil-spec coating. And Jason I’d be happy to send you the AAL battery tray you mentioned in the video. I bought one and never used it - would be happy to send it to you as a gift. Have watched your videos for years and happy to help out a fellow LDS. 😊
That’s great to hear! And I’ll check out the PACS system! Not sure I’d use the battery thing either. 🤣 But I really appreciate the offer!
Bottom line…….its not only one of the coolest SUVs/trucks on the road, it’s one of the coolest vehicles on the road. Just as cool as a lot of supercars, It’s legitimately a super truck.
I think it’s really awesome. I’m not sure it’s worth the current msrp - at least I wouldn’t have paid that. But I think it’s worth every penny of the 77 i paid for it.
Looking forward to seeing it with the rack and RTT. Great walk around video!
Me too! Coming right up!
Looking forward to seeing it with the rack and RTT
MSRP is good. Looks nice. Have fun.
Very cool run through. Amazing vehicle. The most capable off road vehicle sold off a lot by far!
Agreed!
Great video!! One cool feature I like is when your in Baja or rock crawl you can switch through the camera modes with the camera button. I like the 360 when I’m on edges/ledges. Other camera modes allow you to see your front tire placement in D or the rear tire placement in R. You should go to the Raptor offroadeo in Vegas. I have not gone yet. I’m putting together a cool Braptor crew together to go. If your in let me know😉👊🏻
Oh nice! I can’t wait to play with that!
I live in Vegas too
That is a cool vehicle.
Good choice with the TrailRax roof rack. We love ours. I did a video install which includes a good tip on attaching the front pieces. The nuts are otherwise hard to reach. The Explorer ST has the same motor btw
Awesome thanks! I’ll check out your video. I’ve had a few others reach out with tips.
TFL is a mile above sea level, the air is much thinner and it makes all vehicles much slower. They usually mention that before clocking 0-60 or quarter mile
Great buy sir. Can’t wait for you to put it through its paces off-road. Also see how close you get to the payload capacity when start adding the goodies to the vehicle.
I'm really curious to see how that holds up... rack, rtt, fridge, goal zero and camping supplies in the back... I'll probably have 200 miles of range on that tank!
As an owner of Bronco Raptor 4A does still make it crab when completing tight turns as the computer thinks your slipping so it sends power to the front wheels. So it's recommend you stay in 2H unless on a slippery surface (snow, mud, ice, etc.) as it will likely damage the transfer case if you keep it in 4A always.
Good to know! Thank you!
Sounds like quite the adventure! Accidentally buying a Bronco Raptor must have been a wild experience. We sent you an email, take a look.
I have the same motor in the explorer st. It's fun. It's powerful. But i don't personally expect to keep a turbod vehicle for over 200k miles. I'll sell before then and let someone else deal with it. Naturally aspirated motors are the ones i expect to last high miles.
How many miles do you have on yours?
I also have a Bronco Raptor I’m doing a light overland build on, look forward to seeing how it looks when your done. Reliability is a toss up, but a risk worth taking for how cool these new broncos are!
I agree!
Congrats
Thanks!
Congrats on the Braptor. I’m losing track of all the toys you have or had. I recall the 4Runner, then the AEV Prospector, now the Braptor and you casually mention the Gladiator during this video. What next? Colorado ZR2 Bison? Let me know when you want to accidentally sell me this Braptor…
Hahaha. Well the gladiator is my wife’s. She loves it. I don’t really care for it.
CONGRATULATIONS! One thing I’d like to point out is, about the MGV vs leather, I picked the leather because it has rear cup holders. That to me supersedes being able to hose down my seats 😂
Wow. Another thing I missed out on. The lack of rear cupholders is annoying
Living in Orlando where do you Overlanding to? I need to find a place. Thanks
One of the gentlemen who attends a local scottsdale cars and coffee, is a retired Boeing engineer, worked at ford etc. His early run bronco, had reliability problems, and he eventually swapped a 5.0L into his, and currently is running a 5.2L iirc, things now reliable and a hoot to see and hear running. He also has a Raptor R f150, and a 2dr base bronco. an LC79 crew truck, a jimny, and a hijet jumbo truck for his little ranch property back in AZ. Hes building a 1968 Mustang fastback right now, with a 7.3L godzilla, and a 2001 is300 with a new 3.5L Titan 2jz, he daily drives a k swapped mini and a kia soul truck chop up, awd, with a k swap as well. Crazy inventive old man who gets bored pretty easily hahaha. I am eye balling a high mileage dead engined bronco base 4 dr right now myself, contemplating a 5.0L swap and donor stuff from a new '24 rcsb f150 that my son will be doing a 7.3L swap into... Great video man!
Thanks man! And that guy has quite the collection! It’d be awesome to see the 5.0 swapped bronco for sure.
RE reliability if it's anything like the gen2/3 F150 Raptors you can expect a pretty overbuilt frame and suspension, some minor gremlins and a big question mark on long term reliability of the powertrain. I personally just grabbed a cheap Floodford 7 year/100k warranty and have then proceeded to send it. I think sell when the warranty is up being the smart move. Congrats and enjoy it!
Thank you! Powertrain reliability is always the question and what makes the 4runner so attractive to so many!
@@SwellRunner I had a 4runner before the Raptor, loved it EXCEPT that reliable 4.0/5 speed is brutally slow by comparison. :D
American Adventure Labs has a pretty awesome overland build for the Bronco. I have my own plans to do that in a Braptor.
I love what they do.
good one
Thanks!
The 0-60 discrepancy between you and TFL is due to them being at altitude.
Hmm valid point. Not sure it’s worth a whole second. But I didn’t consider that.
When it comes to turbo charged engines, they are typically impacted more by altitude.@@SwellRunner
TFLs 0-60 was lower because they are in Denver at 5000ft elevation. They mention that aspect in most videos.
Wow. My dealership wouldn’t even order one for me. And I asked twice!! I remember even when they were listed at 70k . I just won’t by one on the lot with the added mark up.So I bought two 392’s at msrp .Ford just left a sour spot in my soul😤so I’m waiting for the dealer crash to come.
The engine have same construction, as 2.7 ecoboost, And it was very reliable.
The 3.0L Ecoboost V6 is in the Explorer ST
That’s what I’d heard.
It was in the Lincoln Aviator and Ranger Raptor as well. Generally though it is a stroked 2.7L Ecoboost which was used with great success in the F-150. I'm a little Leary about anything built since 2020 but it will be as dependable as anything similar. Keep in mind your reference for Toyota reliability is based on trucks built before 2019. Besides being a 20 year old design and having all the bugs worked out those Toyotas didn't have enough power to break anything. Modern Toyotas with twin turbochargers built since the pandemic are turning out to be a different animal. Keep in mind that the Bronco has Ranger underpinnings, but the Braptor has F-150 underpinnings. That rear Dana 50 is similar to Ford's Super 8.8 but it is floating like Ford's HD 9.75" (which is similar to a Dana 60)
I think this motor is from the explorer ST but larger turbos.
0:02 How do you accidentally buy a vehicle? Buying a car is a very involved process. 😂 2:40 Ahhh that’s how. 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
I had aptive cruise control on a Tacoma and a Rav and they would slam the brakes on when passing a tractor trailer in a left hand corner (multi lane highway). The truck thought I was going to run into the tractor trailer. It was horrible and almost got me rear ended a few times. Its unsafe.
Oh man. I haven’t had any buggy issues like that in any of my vehicles.
What phone mount charger are you using?
It’s a peak design MagSafe charger mount thingy with a 1” ball. Then the rest is just ram mount stuff for the 1” ball.
What happened to the 4runner did it fail on you?
Sold it back in 2019
How you can change the sound of the exhaust is because it is digital through the speakers, it just SOUNDS cooler in the cab. You are not actually effecting the exhaust as that would need to be a mechanical feature.
I hear you, but I don't think that's correct. It definitely sounds different outside. I do agree that it's probably more gimmick than anything tho...
Guy, it’s a valved exhaust system……what the hell are u talking about.
My issue. You can basically get the F-150 Raptor for the same price as the Bronco Raptor. In that case the F-150 seems like a no brainer. Just the size of the fuel tank in the broncos would be enough for me to be out.
Ford's offroad focus has always been in Desert Racing. If you look at other offroad racing trucks it's all about wheel travel so you can drive faster in the whoops. The bigger the tire, the smaller the hole, is a common phrase in desert racing. That's why Trophy Trucks now run 40" tires.
Yea, good point.. Honestly, the legendary reputation of the F150 Raptor is really what gave me solace in the long term capability of this thing. I know they're not the 'same', but I'm hoping some of that quality has rubbed off.
@@SwellRunner I hope it works out for you. Definitely a cool truck!
@@SinCityDetailthanks!
The rear seat will recline back, but not much.
Well, if you’re going to accidentally buy something… that’s a cool thing to accidentally buy!
That’s what I throught.
TFL is over 1 mile above sea level and you are in Florida. But yes 7 seconds seems very slow
This is true.
On my F150 Raptor I have adaptive cruise control and never even use it. I am on I-4 most of the time and it is all stop and go so I just don’t use it.
They lost me at IFS. I want old school, solid axle. IFS and rack and pinion steering tend to fail in catastrophic ways. I've limped a separated adjustable trackbar out of the bottom of Rausch Creek trail system and down the highway 15 miles to our camp spot. I recently had a passenger steering ball joint slip out of the knuckle because a castle nut wasn't torqued right. I didn't crash even though my passenger tire was flapping in the breeze, and you could imagine input to the driver side was limited. I just slowed down, continued to drive until I found a side road and was able to ginger it out of the way. Try that with an IFS.
did you know that baja 1000 trucks have IFS? did you know that ultra4 unlimited classes winners have IFS? Sounds like you have 0 first hand experience with IFS. This fucking story of solid front axles being the only way is so misguided
lol Jeep lost me at solid axle. The Bronco Raptor is a way more capable and better driving vehicle than any Solid Axle at anything but the most extreme rock crawling and there isn’t anything a stock Jeep can do better even on the rocks.
@a36538 lol. You are talking about custom, heavy built IFS race builds. They represent nothing that comes from a factory. Grow up. This is the real world.
@TheGreekbull i am talking from real experience with both IFS and solid axle. Typically, when I see IFS fail, it is really bad. Like sucks to even recover. Don't get me wrong, solid axle failure can suck, but from my experience, there is a way to finagle a way out of it.
@@johnfitzgerald5158 I understand what you’re saying. But the Raptor’s are just built different. Both the F-150 and Bronco Raptor have raced and finished the Baja 1000 with stock engines, drivelines, transmissions and suspensions with very slight modifications made to meet SCORE safety regulations. They are capable of things at speeds that will break almost every other stock vehicle in half.
Where do you live in Florida?
Orlando
My 18 4Runner was totaled by a driver that crossed into my lane. I went and bought a 24 4Runner. I want the reliability. These turbo charged vehicles scare me a bit that they wont be as reliable after 100k miles.
I 100% agree. I'm seriously considering getting a new '24 4Runner and doing a light overland build on it... although I'd probably supercharge it. 🤣
@@SwellRunnerI’ve been following you for awhile now and honestly wished you went this route.
One just doesn't accidentally buy a Braptor...
I mean. It’s not literal. But it kinda is.
😂
Portals!
I accidentally watched this video 😮
🤣🤣
Trail turn works in several modes, not just 4L.
Oh really!? Nice!
Wish I would get surprised with my ranger raptor
Haha. I hear ya. A buddy was just up somewhere with a bunch. They look rad
I think everything is cool about the Bronco, but it has wind noise like a Wrangler, and that is one reason I like the old Cherokee, Blazer,. and Bronco.
Our gladiator has a soft top and it’s LOOOOOOOUUD. The bronco is louder than my big truck
lol and “not overlanders” you’re one of the OG overlanders with that 4runner
haha... I like to think so... I also like to call myself, honestly, a has-been. Which is fine. It's cool to hear I inspired a whole gaggle of modern day content creators...
Oh, it makes me happy to see you got a Bronco! I was heartbroken when you sold the 4Runner, because I'm not a huge Ram fan. My background is with government fleet, and we had F150's with the EcoBoost 3.5 for our police department. Two issues, and your motor is a little different and newer so it may not apply: variable timing actuators, and the direct injection needs to be cleaned every 25-30K miles to keep it purring. Other than that, the EcoBoost motor family seems to be real reliable! Can't wait to see what how your build this one up!
Ecoboost and reliable in the same sentence ? No way
🤣 :insert: F.O.R.D. acronym here.
That's right... I didn't realize you probably see an ecoboost motor all over PD fleets. I won't say I miss my 4Runner because it's older now... But I would be lying if I said I'm not seriously considering buying a brand new 5TH GEN 2024 before they replace it. I actually really love this bronco, like really love it. I really do hope I have zero issues with it.
This was no accident haha
🤔
4A is rear wheel until the BRaptor senses slip and then power gets split
I hear that. But it doesn’t feel that way. But 🤷♂️
17:57 or it could be the thousands of feet of elevation difference between Florida and Colorado…maybe? 😂
I've definitely heard that it makes a difference.... But a whole second in 0-60 time is a huge difference. I'm no expert, just an observation.
@@SwellRunner it’s a good question. Forced induction tends to mitigate the altitude air density somewhat but I haven’t personally seen a direct comparison of how much effect it has on acceleration times. 1 second is a big difference, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s all it was because a very quick google search is showing that the general rule of thumb is 3-3.5% per 1000ft. So, about 15% power loss (about 60HP) would make a noticeable difference.
I accidentally bought something and didnt notice the price … one day I will😅😅
🤣
Holy crap, no wonder you can get faster than tfl truck, they are only 7000 feet higher than you. Nice rig though.
There ya go boys and girls. A good reason to live at sea level. You can drive faster
Only drawback I can see is the gas mileage and the range...not really suited for overlanding.
Accidents happen. If you don’t want it I’m more than happy to take it off your hands. Lol
Cost of ownership? …Yes.
I accidentally bought a 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 78 series diesel Troop carrier 😀
Dang. I wish one of those would land in the states.
@@SwellRunner good to see you back making videos 👍
Accidentally?
Sorta ...
At over 90 grand in my area......yeah it's a way over priced jeep.
I’m agree. I was price protected, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it.
The Bronco Raptor is a far superior vehicle to any Jeep out of the box. If it wasn't for Jeep give buyers a $15,000 rebate on Gladiators and other models they wouldn't be selling anything right now.
@@larrybriggs2920true
feels like a cleverly disguised commercial.
Think of it like a reverse commercial. I paid THEM to feature it.... But maybe Ford won't hate me for sparking an honest conversation on it's long term reliability and invite me to something someday...
First time on your page, I love your responses to comments. Lol.
I hope the engine lasts for you. Unlike so many others.
Oh no! Please tell us more! What are you hearing?
I've heard the same, sadly. Lots of cracked cylinder heads and cracked valves/valvetrain. @@SwellRunner
@@SwellRunner Well just be careful. Matt Carriker had one fail on him it had 50 miles on it. Many more have gone that way as well. His started with an oil leak. If you search "bronco raptor engine issues" you will get some interesting reading unfortunately. I truly wish it had a good powerplant as the looks and versatility are great.
As a mechanic I try to stay abreast of any vehicle problems so I don't get myself into trouble.
Thanks for the info!
I watched for less than 25 seconds on his click bait.
Big mistake 😂, good luck 😂
Curious on your opinion it is a big mistake.
@@SwellRunnerit’s not a v8
Omg, say it ain’t so!! You see, most times I’d say you’re right, but in certain cases….a vehicle could be so capable/awesome, that it doesn’t matter. Having extensive wheel time with a 392 and this raptor…….id choose this any day of the week. Stuffing a v8 into a wrangle is a novel thing, but this thing is so comprehensively worked over, it’s just on a different level. Try driving one, instead of just uttering nonsense.
Yeah you should of bought Lexus GX 550 it’s nicer will last longer and resale value will be 2x better. The raptor bronco is fast yeah but it’s not faster then jeep SRT or the jeep track hawk. Smarten up buy Lexus or Toyota.
lexus Gx 550 overtrail on 35s will spank the raptor
In many ways. But perhaps not in all the ways. Although if you placed both before me with the option to pick only one, I’d probably take the 550.
@SwellRunner will you be checking out the gx 550 or Land Cruiser? I would love to see your preview of either vehicle.
Sorry but I think you will be regretting that move. Just watch the video that Ben Hardy just posted. 😮
Yeah, that's why I didn't buy ones because of the motor.
🙄 "accidentally" bought a $100,000 vehicle......sure
It was! I swear!
@@SwellRunner how about "accidentally" giving 100 grand to me so I can "accidentally" move and improve my life
