I Built a LUXURY Keyboard... (So You Don't Have To)
In this video I build a luxury custom keyboard the Freya 68 Ultra. I use Morandi linears and GMK Fuji keycaps - is it worth building this keyboard?

Hi can you make a video on the oneplus keyboard
TRY THE SUGAR65 OR THE CIDOO NEBULA
I made a short - but its not worth a full vid for me @@beehivelax
I have $500 for my 1st mechanical keyboard whats the closes thing to the thocky Zoom75 you build I can actually buy right now can you plz tell me because I'm going crazy with things out of stock. Thank you
@@elihere1242 Rebult keyboards have some Zoom 75 in stock - Meletrix is a one stop thock shop, I wouldn't settle for less!
I love to see builds I can't afford and this one is really beautiful. Letting Nola walk on a luxury keyboard's PCB is what makes you a great cat dad 😎
I found a beat up rk61 in the trash and cleaned it up and put a keychain on it. When I use it I wear a monocle and a top hat. I think it counts as luxury if you do that.
Luxury is a mindset

Are you thespiffingbrit ?
@@ylasu187 not that I know of. Why are they cool?
Finally got around to trying out Morandi switches, got to say Hipyo I really appreciate the recommendation. They feel really nice on my Q1 pro
im excited, i got in on the GB and cant wait
hipyo i love your vids its really helpfull its fun to watch to and it helps me trying to find a good budget keyboard (the good ones are still to expensive though) but love your vids so keep up the good work thx a lot
$600+ for a 60% board is wild
i mean unikorns on the aftermarket are like $800+
wait til you find out about 40%s 😂
@@mrskwrlall I will say is, be wiser with your spends ☺️🤙
its a 68% board, my friend ;)
@@tecyrizz Aha, you totally got me there! 🙌🏻 I will now do a 180° turn of my opinion and join this group buy!
Thanks to your video's I recently build my first keyboard. It's not a big buck keyboard. I've got the M1w from Monsgeek with the Akko v3 silver pro. And I have to say, the building was not hard and they sound amazing while typing.
Nice to finally see some good budget options in the keyboard space 😎
Huge fan!
What a knob! 😅 Greetings to Nola and her pet Hipyo (from Britain).
Can you do a Boog75 review, I saw it on your 60 keyboard video so I’m curious for a closer look.
Another great review Hipyo! What kind of Leica did you get?? M6 TTL is my personal favorite.
Q3!
Morandeez nutz! 😂😂 this is why we live you hipyo lmao
I love macros. And the back is reaaally pretty, but the screen and overall layout is not for me. Neither is the price tag hahaha But very cool, tho! And it sounds really good! Great video!
It’s great to see a budget board for a change.
I just spent $300 CAD on a Neo65, with GMK Red Samurai. That's luxury enough for me
Thanks for reviewing this keyboard! I was looking into it but was ultimately deterred by the 60% layout. Price point was way too much for what it offered :(
tbh, I bought the Zoom 75 two months ago thanks to your videos and I kinda feel like buying an expensive keyboard might be worth it, but only in a few cases and definitely depending on where you live. I haven't watched the full video yet, but let me explain. I live in Italy, so importing the Zoom 75 (which was in stock btw, so I got it like three weeks after I placed the order) meant 150 euros of total shipping costs just for the keyboard itself, split into shipping, taxes and customs processing fees. The keyboard was 229$ and the keycaps I got were the WS PBT from Meletrix itself (it saved me quite a lot in shipping, having them both in one order) at 82$. After that, I needed switches and the tools, being my first custom mechanical keyboard. The switches, as per your recommendation, were Wuque's Morandi and they cost me 45.15$ with 26$ of shipping on top, while the tools I bought from Kinetic Labs were 63.95$, 18.87$ of shipping and 35 euros of taxes and fees. In total, a Zoom 75 build cost me about 600 euros. That's right, guys. Yes you read that correctly. The video Hipyo made about this keyboard? "It's a super nice budget keyboard to start!" and many others said the same. Fun fact, all of them were Americans and all of them advertised the keyboard as a 200-250$ keyboard. That's fair, but the full picture is very much different if you live in Europe. I felt like commenting to let you guys know, maybe someone is considering buying a custom keyboard and expects a mild price tag for a mid-range keyboard and would therefore get an unpleasant surprise down the road. Going back to high-end keyboards, they don't really make sense to me because the Freya would probably be close to 1k in Italy, or at minimum 800. I was curious because when I got the email the black edition got me kinda excited if you know what I mean, but yh that is just too much for a keyboard imo. If I were a full-time home-office kinda developer I'd consider it for sure, but there are plenty better ways to spend one k for me, like maybe saving it to up my budget for a nice watch I can actually wear or something. That said, the Zoom 75 has opened my eyes to the keyboard world and it's amazing. The feeling I get when typing is something else and I now understand why this hobby became so popular, given everyone on this planet uses a computer daily. If I had a ton of money, I probably wouldn't need to type on a keyboard all day, but it'd be nice to have a very high quality custom. Not having a ton of money and having experienced the difference between what youtubers based in the US say and what I actually have to spend makes me wary about this stuff tho. Well, best of luck to anyone picking up the hobby, hope you have deep pockets!
you're 100% right which is the reason i stuck with the sk71 from womier i piad 120$ for it with express shipping i also bought HMX Clouds switches fairly cheap at around 34$ and then i bought some keycaps from epomaker for 40$ so i spend 194$ and personally i think this is as premium as i'm willing to go to build my own.
Same here, based in Poland
I wanted to ask a question since you seem to know. I also live in Italy and I'm looking to buy my first keyboard. I'm looking at the Neo 80. To ship that keyboard plus some vertex v1 switches costs around 240 euro with shipping. the keycaps would also cost 125 euro with shipping. Do you think this is a good price to pay for this keyboard?
Holy shit: I think this post has got a higher word count than the script for this video.
@@sebastianbelcredi655 I’ll be honest, I don’t know this particular keyboard. however I googled it and it looks quite nice, so if the build quality is good (I suppose you have already watched reviews of it) I’d say the price is definitely a nice deal. Keep in mind that, at least for the first keyboard, you should check if it has VIA compatibility and RGB. If it doesn’t, I would suggest looking elsewhere. The keycaps are also decently priced; they are on the most expensive side so I suppose they are gmk or have artisan special keys, but that’s a good choice. If you got cheaper switches to save on the budget, trade a few euros off of the keycaps and into the switches though. Switches are definitely more important for the sound and feel of the keyboard. As for the tools, like the lube for example, maybe try the keyboard first, if both the switches and the stabilizers are factory lubed. If they’re not, you absolutely need to get Krytox and a full kit (keycap puller, switch puller, brushes and the Krytox itself, and finally a switch opener) and it’s not that cheap, cost me 100 from Kinetic Labs. You might save quite a lot of money buying some traditional lube and cheaper tools on amazon or in a local shop (in ferramente magari). Enjoy your first build when you get to it, it’s a lot of trial and error and it’s awesome!
Preordered the Valhalla version of it, still can't really decide which Keycaps to get for it, can't wait for building it tho!
Hey Hipyo, I just want to say I hope you get your hands on a Boog75 and the Melgeek Cyber01 because while I know one is awesome the other seems...interesting. Would make for some cool videos if you ever get the chance.
Hi Hipyo! I love your channel, thanks for all the content. I was hoping you could help me figure something out. How long does the battery on a mechanical keyboard usually last and do they take super long to charge? I just got a mojo84 by melgeek and I noticed that it takes forever to charge. Thank you!
Would love to see a video on the new Keychron Q1 Max!
Facts bro. Looks like a clean board.
Would you do a review on the DrunkDeer a75 or g65 keyboard? Would they be a good budget magnetic switch keyboard?
Hey Hipyo, I’ve been using the EpoMaker TH 80 SE 75% keyboard, and every time I look at it I kinda sorta think the logo on the right is an eyesore, do you think it’s possible to mod the keyboard to have a mini OLED display?
B-but why? It doesn't even have a numpad :( (for real though, I can't live without one, I don't understand how people do. Maybe I'm just old.)
wow keyboards are getting more creative, including the springs. ive gotten out of this rabbit hole since last year. But its interesting watching it from the side-lines. I think my early days High End keyboard set me back 800+usd and total upwards of 1000K. 7V first gen.
Hipyoooooo, keychron Q max review when? I feel like it comes with so much more foam than regular Qs, that it deserves a separate review (and i couldn't find a single non-stock sound test and who needs stock eh?)
Maybe can u try the ws keycap as well, It's kinda good.
Damn, I'm early this time around!
Can ya do a review for the leobog hi75? I'm considering a budget alu keeb and cant decide between it and rainy75. Thanks so much!
i like the corrupted snippet at the very very end where the end cards come in
the jade switches i heard sound pretty nice, try them sometimes, i wanna know what you think about them
Have you ever tried to customise the Havit mechanical keyboard? It has to be the cheapest keyboard on Amazon for sure.
One thing to keep in mind is the amount of saved time and guarantee that it all works for the price. I just built myself a luxury board from buying everything and assembling it all myself, lubing the switches myself too. It was time consuming, difficult, as a first time I fucked up a bit, had to spend extra money on getting all the tools and products required to even attempt modding a keyboard. Honestly, not a terrible price. I think I've spent around 350-400 on the keyboard parts themselves + the things required = 500 and that doesn't even account for accessories and new keycaps soon since I'm not satisfied with all the sets I have but damn does it sound, look and feel heavenly. It's only my 3rd board, first I mess with besides the keycaps and I consider this my nearly endgame one. The market doesn't seem to be ready for my endgame so I'll just wait for some years.
@coughfee_beans what kind of switches and kit did you decide on? did you include any luxury accessories, like either of the knobs in the video? Nicely done on your first build. It can be a real bitch sometimes. I always get nervous I'm going to f something up and just feel like leaving it to the manufacturer means it'll be in better hands than my own (even though I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself). Cheers.
Hipyo NEEDS to make a review on the Tofu 65!!! Is it still worth in 2024 or a review on the Aula F75!!!
Hipyo I think u should try the ck60w from cyber power. its a full aluminum 60% keyboard with a back weight that cost $72. Or the novice 68 which is $19-23
Same thing happened to me Hipyo with those new Ws 3.1 stabs, they appeared lubbed so I built a new board only to want to die afterwards due to so much rattle.
Knob, touchscreen, slider, great sounding and customizable case... this IS luxury and innovation
Wuque is really hit or miss, this keeb is literally one of the most unsightly things I have ever seen in this keeb universe.
I personally love the shape language and overall aesthetic. As with anything else in this hobby, it's all about ✨️✨️preference✨️✨️
Can you make a page that recommends keyboards based on price range? Starting from the lowest price possible to the highest price. This will be of great help ... maybe a link to the video of the chosen keyboard if available! Thanks.
@hipyotech would love your help/insight. Looking to upgrade my current mechanical razor keyboard with a custom board. I have an irrational love for the Aluvia Aluminum Key set. Since that’s going to cost me a pretty penny I thought making sure the rest of the board is up to the quality of the keys would be great but have lots to learn. Let me know if there’s a way to connect!
I bought some different switches for my zoom 65 v2.5 build. I honestly preferred the husky switches vs the morandi's which shocked me tbh (edit: I also hand lubed both and still preferred the husky linears
Do a video on the keyboard you would pick if you could only have one keyboard what would you choose
Hi Hipyo, I just bought the womier SK71 and I love it ! The sound is fcking amazing I wasn't expecting this. The only pb I have is that it doesn't have the F1-F12 row and I kinda need it. Do you know any keyboard that is exactly as amazing but 75% ? Thank you for everything you do, your work is very useful to all of us hipyo followers :D
The Leobog Hi75 is my go to suggestion in that front. I have the Womier SK71 and Leobog, they are very similar in sound and feel
Ow, thank you, I'll check that out 😄
I can second this.
Wonder if one day you may review one handed TiPO
Try lubing blue switches with coconut oil only on the top of the switch, it made mines thock
finally hipyo reviewing a luxury board
And then they released and IC for Zoom65 V3. A key board with 7 mounting options, yes 7 mounting options
I had to return my Jade switches for the same reason, they were super inconsistent from one to another.
hipyo try the aula f75 keyboard
Is there like a key starter pack with alot of different options so i can see what i like?
Hello I have a really important question if I want to take a switch of but one clip broke can I take it off without desoldering
Ive been following the Freya for a while and i want it SO DAMN BAD.... I am sooooo tempted to break my bank for this damned thing.
Can you please review the RedMagic 96% keyboard. It's got a full size 0 and Enter key on the numpad (which I use often with my mouse hand). I wanna know if it's worth the buy and can be customized for tactile but quite typing and casual gaming. ❤
Can you review the akko spr67?
I would have bought this but two issues. 1) completely sold out 2) I can't imagine not having Home/End/Delete keys ... so... what do you recommend? Thank you btw
Morandeez nuts got me.
Do you know when the rainy 75 is coming to amazon
I ordered mine from Taobao and received it like yesterday (ordered it end if december last year), the keyboard stock sounds and feels amazing, I plan to swap the switches for glorious pandas. Cost me like around 150 ish CAD with shipping and everything. If you have some relatives and if you can read chinese I suggest you to buy it from there
I ordered the day of release
Can't believe the number of issues you ran into for that price tag, and you still have a positive outlook on the board. If I'm getting a prototype that they "will fix going forward" I'm spending prototype money, not no DAMN $440. Pretty scummy if you ask me. Especially if you received this board for free, I would have ripped it a new one
Surprise kohaku cameo kek. Amazing board though
I think u should of put the zoom 75 keyboard so it would be more thocker but idk how it would look
Hey Hipyo, can you review the Aula f75. It’s supposed to be the king of budgets keyboards of 2024.
looks they were going for some kind of Art Deco look but I think it fell flat. The volume slider is going to get visually old quick
What do i do if my computer says that the last USB device has malfunctioned in response to my keyboard?
Is the epomaker x aula75 a good budjet 75% keyboard? It's $69.99 and apparently sounds amazing. My current keyboard is a overpriced and awful sounding Roccat keyboard and I have been thinking about buying a new one. And if you have any other suggestions for a 75% keyboard around the same price that sounds just as good or better please tell me.
Can you review the royal kludge r65 I need another opinion on it before I buy it?
Do you plan on using any other switch? I feel like you used morandis a bit too much
Hi, I have a question. I currently have the razer blackwidow v3 elite, and im looking to get a custom keyboard because they sound amazing 🫠 is the keychron q5 max good and would i be able to put CIY Naraka switches in it. Also would it make a good keyboard for gaming. I'd be open to suggestions too please🫡 im new to all this custom keyboard stuff its quite interesting
Oo and also I'd love it to be clean thocky so it would be awesome to know which plates to get and foams :). (Sorry for the paragraph. I'm just super interested in owning the ear boggling thockyness😔)
TLDR; I discuss my exp buying a luxury keeb (QK100 for my budget), and why I’m happy with my choice over the Zoom75. I have other keeb projects on the go, so if I buy another *luxury keeb*, it won’t be until late 2024 or next year… unless my friends ask me to build one for them. So I bought my first ‘luxury’ keyboard last summer during the qk100 groupbuy. I had to make the tough call between the zoom75 + zoompad and the qk100, because both groupbuys were happening at the same time and I couldn’t afford both. Before the qk100, I had modded my first keeb only 4-5 months prior (a keychron v5), and just finished building my kbdcraft addams with the southpaw numpad variation. so the next keeb was a BIG jump for me in price & skill - I needed to feel confident I could build it, mod it, and get the most return on it without buying anything extra. Ultimately, I needed a numpad and buying the Zoompad separately would have cost me too much in money & desk space. I’m happy with my decision to buy the qk100 because I feel like I have a great base to mod & upgrade over the years. It’s my daily driver for work, was a good price, has a fun LED screen (which I’ve loaded with silly gifs that I switch based on my mood), had a helpful build guide, and has all of the keys/functionality I needed. I do miss the per-key RGB exp I’d get from both my keychron & kit addams though, so that’s a priority for whichever keeb I buy next. I am still considering whether I’ll transition to an 80% layout at some point for my main home setup. It will require buying a separate numpad for work, but then I can store it away when I’m gaming. But in the meantime, I’m modding my keychron v5 to be my go-to silent keeb for on-the-go work, so I think I have enough going on for now. 😂
can you do a review on sharkoon ?!
hey Hipyo , make a review on Xinming m87 pro .
My favourite part is the laggy screen as a knob
he should make a video about the keychron k6 hotswappable
hey, im pretty new yet learning on the keyboard community. Any answers are very much appreciated. I was wondering how I could get my hands on a first high end keyboard pretty fast. Where do I look for on purchasing them? What marketplace app should I check and if there is a website, which websites are the best?
Personally I’d say singa makes the best boards like the kohaku shown in the video. somehow Elaine (designer) makes keyboards that sound amazing no matter what. I have the kohaku and I love it. Only issue is getting the boards are hard because they’re raffles.
I feel like diminishing returns hit pretty hard after the ~$150 range for just the case, but switches (especially tactiles), keycaps and mayyyyybe the tech such as a screen, etc. tend to have justification for their price tags. Aluminum is aluminum, and there's only so high a grade you can go before it simply doesn't matter, but it takes a lot to make a good switch, and a lot to make a good design, so of course they're gonna cost you. Sure, you hit diminishing returns on linears almost immediately, but there's SO much room for error and preference in tactiles, it makes it impossible to get it "right" for everyone like you more or less can with linears. The problem with tech (other than wireless, and VIA support) is that it's almost always just flashyness and that's about it. RGB is fun and all, but a screen that maybe displays your CPU temp or whatever.. it's never ACTUALLY helpful, it's just there for fun, which isn't a bad thing, just not worth the price for me.
can u review the aula f75 one of the best budget gaming keyboards
Can you do a Aula F75 Review !!!
would you say that this is better than the odin 75?
How come your volume slider keeps flipping upside down?
if you're into the aesthetic, the collectability, build quality, and uniqueness - then YES a "luxury" or high-end custom keyboard is 100% worth it. My personally owned current favorite keyboards were $140, $260, $320, $600, and $910 and can say without a doubt I have the *least* amount of regret for the two most expensive ones. There is a difference there that is palpable, if not sometimes difficult to describe. Don't get me wrong I also love love love my cheaper Jris and QK boards but at the end of the day they just don't hold a candle to the more expensive ones and they spend a lot less time on my desk in daily use Side note, I was totally gonna go for this GB then a "never-opened" Mammoth75 with extras popped up for sale and I couldn't resist jumping on that instead. Also, the burgundy Freya isn't available with the silver weight which I found to be a huge bummer since the gold of the side profile, the gold of the back, and the gold of the Freya weight in the middle of the back were three different tones which I personally didn't like the look of
There's no way in the world a kit like this is worth anywhere near $600. Can anyone explain? Is the aluminum plate machined by a master craftsman or something? The touch screen knob isn't enough to warrant it either, unless it's purely custom made for this keyboard.
It’s beautiful, but I had the mammoth 75 which is also a beautiful board from them but the knob felt cheap, delayed and sound was meh.
I've already ordered a copy with the flex cut PCB, so here's a question: what's wrong with it? Maybe just preference? I can still modify my order before the GB ends, so let me know! ;)
It's all preference! I prefer the flex to come from the gaskets rather than the PCB/plate
please do the leica unboxing + review! Anyone who likes photography even a little bit has heard of how good a leica can be
Seconding this!
Hipyo give me the best bang for your buck keyboard that would be mainly used for gaming. Please 🙏
I love the look of the Freya, but for me personally, the knob with the screen makes it a hard "no." I just don't really have a use for that and I feel it will make the keyboard look really dated in 10-20 years. If they made a cheaper version without the screen/knob, I'd be really interested, especially since I'm still in budget land and it would be more of a true step up from my current set up.
It's modular. You can swap it for a 4 key cluster
I bought a prebuilt “custom keyboard” I’m special
I ordered mine.
Im considering to build a 250 dollar keyboard should I do it: Case: V1 barebone Switch: Gateron silent black v2 And some black key caps Is it worth it ? And I’m from Denmark so I don’t have as many choices as you Americans
Can you review the Leobog HI75
i like that keyboard.....but for me the price is too high, great review
Hey I just got some ceramic keycaps from Cerakey, I need a good case and whatnot to put them in cause my Corsair keyboard isn’t working out. But idk how to build a keyboard and imma need to be walked through cause I’m a bit slow, can anybody help me out? I have a budget of $250 excluding keycaps as I already have them. I want a full size with some extra features
can you review the FOPATO H98?
I didn't know Oversimplified did tech reviews Seriously though found this channel today, it's great, watched the water bottle video first which wasn't weird but every time it's voice over I got this weird feeling like what's happening
Just bought a zoom tkl.... can't believe it that the freya is out...
try the haven65
Hippyo, love the video mate, so here's some constructive criticism. I felt like more of the video was fixing prototype problems than showing off the advantages of custom luxury boards. I'm not very far down the custom board rabbit hole, so maybe this is common, but I feel like it would've been more worthwhile to pick a slightly older luxury board that's fully released in order to avoid the prototype issues. We also don't know *for sure* that those issues mentioned in this video will be fixed. Cheers
Yeah thats fair! That's actually why I put so much work into showing the prototype issues - cus there's always a chance that it will make it to the final board and I didn't see other creators putting as heavy of a focus on them
@@HipyoTech Much appreciated! I think we all heavily value every good *and* bad detail you give us in these videos. Thank you.
I have the yuzzi yz75 and I want to mod it does any one have any good ideas to do mods if my first custom keyboard and I don’t know what to do.
