It's not sad. It is beautiful that she is underrated and hope she stays that way. Bringing us the real her, her real sound and music not dictated by the system that most of these artists are involved in. I remember what Rihanna said in one of her interviews that she really would like to show her real music and love-- that is to make ska/reggae music.

I think, she is focused on the technique how she sings, she does sing with more emotion at the end but she is blocking a lot of sadness behind that disconnect you talked about, that sadness is visible only a few seconds here and there in her expression

That means she sounds so good naturally, her producers don’t have make any enhancement or changes to her voice during the recording of her records. That’s essentially why artists sound different singing live vs. in their songs. Producers can make the crappiest singers, like Madison Beer for instance, sound amazing on a song, but when she sings live, you can hear just how terrible she actually sounds irl.

Oof, this song hits different. My mother abandoned me when I was 2 and she comes in and out of my life at random years and stages. She doesn’t really stay for long though, but the worst part is that in her head she did nothing wrong. So...yeah this song is like...the big oof.

Whenever I see this rhetoric being bandied about it's usually an effort to put down virtuosos and uplift people with many technical flaws. 99% of good singers out there are competent technicians (in whatever style they sing in) who are also expressive performers.

Saw her in concert 2x here in LA (2018, 2019). She looked and sounded incredible both times. I think she was just 21 yrs old for the first one. She is Legit live. Sang everything I wanted to hear and her band is also the real deal. I felt she really connected with her audience. Wonderful experiences from such a Great young talent.

some people can only express their sorrow away times after a tragedy occured. you can be silent when you’re hurting, and express the pain only after the wound healed or has started to heal. i fee like jorja is the type to remain silent until she’s able to put words on her emotions and be able to handle it entirely ! but that’s just a theory on why people think she « lacks » of expressiveness while singing.
