A dangerously unstable man starts to see monsters all around us.
CORPORATE MONSTER is used with permission from Ruairi Robinson. Learn more at ruairirobinson.com.
After losing his jobs, an unstable man goes into a spiral of depression. His doctor gives him some pills to treat his condition, though they're "not quite FDA approved yet."
But after taking the pills, he begins seeing things: he sees people as horrendous monsters, creatures that control the world from the shadows and stay hidden by people's own blindness and apathy.
Are they hallucinations, or is he merely seeing what's been there the entire time? His girlfriend Ellen tries to bring him back to normalcy, but she can't stop him from seeing the world as full of these monsters. He begins seeing them everyone, and convinced that they're controlling the world, drives himself to almost calamitous action.
Writer-director Ruairi Robinson's thriller is a masterfully crafted piece of psychological suspense, adept at both getting us inside the head of its troubled hero and pulling audiences along with tautly constructed chills and thrills.
The plot hits familiar tropes of sci-fi and horror genres -- and many horror fans will see echoes of John Carpenter's THEY LIVE here -- but Robinson has a gift for generating atmosphere and building character without sacrificing dramatic tension. It's anchored by smart, solid performances, including one by actor Jenna Coleman (currently starring as the titular queen on acclaimed series VICTORIA) as the girlfriend balancing concern for her troubled boyfriend with a growing concern for her own safety.
A sharp eye for ironic, clever detail -- thanks to collaborator Macgregor, who co-directed Omeleto fave LOS ANGELES 1991 -- guides each frame. Deft editing and pacing keep the story propelling forward on the fumes of paranoia, guided with charting the main character's growing instability and alternating between personal character moments and terrific action pieces.
Along with Carpenter, CORPORATE MONSTER has a look and feel that owes a debt to the great, gritty 80s urban sci-fi films, full of stories that saw urban settings teeming with danger and catastrophe. But with its paranoia that a small wealthy, powerful elite controls the world and corporate dominance has seeped into the most intimate, personal levels of human existence, its worldview is firmly of our times. Though the short is a superb piece of entertainment -- and begs for an expansion into a feature -- it gives voice and shape to the fractious, troubled undercurrents of today's social anxiety. Maybe there aren't literal monsters in today's world, the film seems to say -- but underneath the seamy underbelly of it all lies the same monstrous venality, greed and inhumanity.
Doc: "Are you seeing anything strange?" Roger: "No." Doc: "These pills will cure that."
lol, that they did.
The script is sooo bad omg
The thing is we are all ill, not seeing what is happening around us, we are all brainwashed in a way and this pill makes you see clearly what goes wrong. The doctor just helps you to see that "strange" things going on. Its up to you living in a "strange" world or a totally fine world;) it is actually about who you believe and trust.
NERO it's so good in my mind tbh
The doc just wanted to red pill Robert is all.

Fantastic acting on his part imo
Lmfao “Hey! What’s up.” That part killed me too.
The real tragedy of this story is, she took one pill and couldn't get anymore because the doctor was arrested. She could see 'them' for a few hours, but never again, and have to try and live a 'normal' life amongst them, not knowing who was one of them, and who was not, including her whole family.
thats how you create with a comment a worse horror movie than the movie self... thank you...
he left her the bottle
Haha yes that's exactly how it'd be like for someone with a delusion resistant to reason she's just SURE aliens exist cos she saw them XD
Problem, the one she sees as one of them at the end was her boss, the guy he pulled from his office, he was on the pills and just shot two he did see but didn't see that man as one of them, it's a continuity error of sorts, the film makers just effed up there at the end I think 🙂 Because if the monsters were real and the pills did let you see them then he should have seen that man as one of them, and if it was supposed to be that the pills just made you nuts then she shouldn't have seen exactly the same type of monster, so that end doesn't work for either interpretation. Quibbles about its internal logic aside .. Still a nice little piece though.
@@pelinoregeryon6593 You miss understand. He did see the boss as one of them. That's why he pointed the gun at him. He did not point the gun at humans. At that point the film makers switched it to the viewpoint of humans that did not take the pill so we would be viewing it through the unmedicated eyes from that point on.
What I like about this film, especially compared to They Live, is that the protagonist isn't framed as a badass action hero, but as someone who is clearly mentally disturbed by his experience, regardless if it is real or not.
i cant believe how few people in this chat arent mentioning the carpenter film
Haaa...thought the same
I thought of They Live while watching this as well, but I feel like making the thing that lets you see the truth, or whatever, a pill as opposed to something benign, like sunglasses, is that the scene where the main character tries to get someone else to see what they see becomes a lot more understandable when it's, y'know, some random pills from who knows where.
That’s the name I was looking for They Live👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks for that I was going crazy 🤯
Well yeah because the plot device in They Live are glasses that can verifiably let people see the truth without committing to taking a drug. It's way easier for the lead character to understand and communicate what he's seeing; Though that doesn't always work cue the scene with Keith David. The "framing" has entirely to do with the protagonists own knowledge of the situation they're in and their ability to communicate that to other characters. It's hard to make someone take a pill, easy to get them to put on glasses.
I love the casual “hey, what’s up?” after he kills multiple people
Multiple... Things xD

Jenna Coleman and creatures who look eerily similar to the Ood. It's like a Doctor Who episode. That said, or maybe even because of that, I really enjoyed this film. I wasn't sure if it was all in his head or not. Kept me guessing right to the end.
A new version of the awesome movie “They Live”. I wish this was a full movie. The special effects in this are better than most Hollywood movies.
Sad that most commenters have no idea about the 1988 movie, "They Live". Years late, the lead actor, Roddy Piper said this was not a sci-fi movie, but a DOCUMENTARY! (Google, 'Dicyanin Glasses')
They really knocked it out the park & the creature design is amazing but still very creepy at the same time
"Oh hey, Robert. I was going to tell you earlier that your doctor is being sued for malpractice. I wasn't sure if it affected you so I didn't want to interrupt your insane ramblings and psychotic episodes."
Lmao
🤣🤣🤣
Talk about doctors how The mighty have fallen (my impossible girl)
I think it's interesting they took the concept of the movie "They Live" and made it modern..... also if I'm right the guy who stared in the movie said it was based off real life and actually committed suicide....so.........idk
“Thats what they want you to think"
"They're bureaucrats Morty! I don't respect them!"

But I think it’s I don’t respect them
That is a great ass tattoo.
Oh I knew I've seen them somewhere.. thanks for the reminder.
I was gonna teach these aliens that earth isn't there's to conquer but this guy already did my job for me.
Honestly does recall everything from They Live for me. But it feels a bit more modern I think? I like how it carries over the major themes and plot of that feature length film, but in a more direct, focused bite of cinema. I feel like it rounds out that movies themes and structure in just under 14 minutes. I'm impressed. Good watch!
The only difference is the main character didn’t say “I’m here to kick a$$ and chew bubble gum, and I’m all out of bubble gum.”
‘They Live’ had more socioeconomic themes like class (have and have-nots), hinted here but not as explicitly. There was no moment when the aliens said to each other ‘He can see us’.
i’ve seen these things too , my experience is that everyone is capable of having that face . it’s not evil tho, it’s more like a computer , it has a function
He's got a point. If it is a hallucination, they can't both be seeing the EXACT same thing....
As well, halucinations can be shifty and unpredictable, he shouldn't see just 1 thing constantly, faces might change, his sense of location might shift and change, in the end he'd kill everyone or he'd fall down the stairs and die, due to loss of reality
Some people tripping out will share certain hallucinations.
@@VancePantss That is true
@@VancePantss My Dude, If you trip out with someone and they see something, and TELL you what they are seeing, you'll probably see something similar.

Doctor: do u see things? Patient: no Doctor: good take this pills and u will 😃
@Alex Ah, very good point, maybe the doctor could see them, and he was trying to get people to wake up, so they could remove the aliens, monsters, whatever they are, from the planet
JBlake plays yea that’s why it was all over the news that he was a “quack” doctor and they arrested him
Well the monsters shown in this short film are those people which are sickening and corrupted which are controlling the system. And those pills allowed him and her to see the truth.

Wow brilliant special effects! Gripping from start to finish 👍
I absolutely love the implication at the end that he wasn't crazy, confirming his theory that if it was just the pills then they'd see different things. Also hinted that there were those that knew of the presence of non-human entities hidden amongst us i.e. the doctor, and that, at least his doctor, was making an attempt to expose the imposters.
Buuut he did see his as a human, but his girlfriend does not. Look like hallucinations for me
Tema Tomat no he saw it as a alien but the girlfriend didn’t but after she took the pill it showed her that’s y he took the guy out of the office and didn’t kill him because he knew it was a alien and he wanted someone alive for the girlfriend to see
If those were hallucinations, why would the cop with the shotgun directly shoot him? He had not killed anyone before the cop.
