3 MISTAKES Dog Trainers Make and How to AVOID Them: #1 Stay to Recall - Dog Training Videos
There are several inherent problems in these common mistakes that dog trainers and dog owners make. The key issue is that these things confuse the dog and THAT can lead to a host of other problems.
I'd like to address the issues for you here one at a time.

The first of the three issues is that dog trainers will teach a dog to stay, then walk away and then RECALL the dog.
In this video I explain to you why this can be very unclear to your dog and how it can result in a very dangerous situation.

Thanks For the information. With some of your other videos wr this straight forward and direct
Just had a "wow I have a lot to learn" moment. Excuse me while I go watch every one of your videos now.
No one is talking about the gorgeous view and ocean backdrop? Great spot Rob!
That is why I always diffferentiate WAIT from STAY. That is wait until I call you; stay until I come back to you. Love your videos Robert. My 8 month old Belgian has just won his first obedience competition using all your methods.
thats awesome Sally!!! thanks for letting me know!!
This is a good idea. I’ve taught wait as part of stand still with me until I move (for crossing the road, stopping to let someone past on a pavement etc.). I’ve primarily taught stay with a release of “ok” next to the dog (no touch) but have also occasionally combined stay with come. Sit is pretty much always combined with stay
Wow do guys want a pet dog or a pet robot
I train positions in a box. The result is the dog doesent creep forward at all. I also dont have wait command. Sit means sit, down means down, stand means stand, no need for additional stay command. If the dog is sitting it is implied that he must sit on that place and not stand, walk around and sit again when he wants. Also it is implied that he must not lay down.Sit means sit, nothing more, nothing less.
@@joezec72 being as animals are not rational, per Aristotle (metaphysics) and BF Skinner, they are your robots whether your emotions like it or not. We were not created the same as the animals. We were created to have dominion over them and do so as good stewards (Genesis 2). So yes, you should prefer a robot, as you call them, as opposed to autonomous creatures who cannot, in principle, think for themselves. It is a simple matter of metaphysics.
Totally agree. There needs to be some kind of “release” type of command for sit-stay, down-stay, stand-stay types of commands. The dog should never have to guess when the exercise is complete. You give fantastic reasons why. Subscribing now.
Any following command should be an indication that the "exercise" is over. This is why myself and many others who've commented agree that you shouldn't conflate Sit and Stay/Wait commands; it just confuses the dog. When you tell him to Sit, he sits, he expects that either you're doing to say something further, do something, give him something, etc... If you tell him to Sit, and then to Stay, you have now completed that cycle of commands in the dog's mind. He now _knows_ for absolute certain that he should be Sitting *and* Staying/Waiting. I've never had any dog be confused about when the command is over because the commands are not conflated, so the dog is never confused about what he should or shouldn't be doing.
Absolutely makes sense. I unknowingly made this mistake 14 years ago and would've made it again ,with my future puppy, had I not watched this video. Thank you
I’d like to thank you for the time and energy you put into your videos. I’ve picked up a GSD puppy that’s just turned 9 weeks old. I’ve watched most of your videos (still working on the rest) several times and I relate to your natural methods, honest, and no-nonsense approach. I also appreciate your attention to detail as that speaks to me on many levels. I’ve learned a lot from you and have been able to start Avedis off the right way thanks to your help. With just a few minutes work here and there, a few times a day, and he is really amazing! Thank you. I’m a big fan!
The sit, walk away and then call the dog is one of the first things i learned at our dogschool. Never knew this wasnt the right way to teach it 😣
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video, I’m learning so much.
i love this ive always done it the wrong way like you explained but it makes so much sense the way you said it should be done !
Robert, I’m really loving your videos. Picking up our GSD in about three weeks. I really appreciate your willingness to share with us your information about training. It’s very valuable and the skill and expertise you have is undoubtedly the reason you get paid for what you do. I am glad to support your channel and am looking forward to watching more of your great videos. Thanks again👍
Excellent tip, because my dogs kept breaking their stay, but since watching this video our training session have got better.
really impressed, best dog vid I've seen to this date thank you so much keep it up bro!
THANK YOU ! I've been making this exact mistake and this video is like a light bulb going off. I even experienced the very issue of my dog anticipating the recall and breaking the stay today in the park. It's suddenly seems such an obvious mistake and he's learning the pattern I'm now teaching him. One positive is I've spent a lot of time proofing him against distractions by rewarding in position and only recently been calling him to recall from a sit/down so I may not have lost too much ground. Back to basics for a while to repair the damage. I've still got so much to learn. I can't thank you enough for this invaluable advice, can't wait for the next video !
Tesla Nick same!!
my confusion is, so how do you recall him from far?
Same!
Beautiful, thank you, Robert!
I'm a yoga teacher in training with a service dog. This really helps me to form a plan for how to keep her stationary in the classroom while I do yoga. We learned in training not to give second commands, but we also learned recalls and in doing regular obedience with her, I've focused a lot on the recalls and stays instead of using sit like I was taught to. It's such an easy habit to get into, especially when you constantly see other people doing that or you've grown up with dogs that have been trained but not well. I'm going to work on fixing this habit. Thanks for the video!
Love Robert Cabral Such an awesome guy doing it for the right reasons
The video really helped with my two GSDs, thank you so much
Just found your page, loving the vids and what you have to teach us on being a pack leader!
Clear and concise explanation of an essential part of training a dog. It is essential that any trainer's clients need to understand the WHY. It really gets my goat how some trainers like to complicate things to make themselves look like magicians instead of explaining to dog owners the WHY and that all dog training is is association and repetition. Train the owner, train the dog
A million thumbs up! So helpful, yet so simple. Thank you! My Belgian thanks you!!
I have a super smart pit/rot mix. This is gold, a missing link that I totally overlooked. Thank you!
Very good explanation, makes sense!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks you sir, I was questioning that move with the stay. Answered clearly appreciate it
That makes so much sense , thank you.
So enjoy watching Robert train his dogs, I have a belgian shephard tervuren so watch his videos on a regular basis.Thank you Robert .
Thank you for this video. Makes s lot of since.
Guilty great advice ty, once I found a good trainer that reconditioned all those mistake I did exactly what your video says.
Well explained, I've got to change my training methods, this makes sense. Thank you
He does make a good point so the dog doesn’t form the negative behavior of just getting up and walking to the handler when given any type of distraction. The only part I would disagree with is having to walk back to the dog to release them. You can release at a distance. This method can easily work with a dog who is just a pet or who just competes in obedience. But an actual working dog, where it be security, detection or whatever, you have to be able to recall from a distance. Even if they are in a sit, down.
Thus exactly what I was thinking
First of all recall and release are two different things, nowadays people also have multiple releases to direct the dog to a certain reward or lack thereof. Second, constant release from distance creates jittery stays, you have to change the picture constantly so the dog doesn't think distance or posture etc. Also if you always call the dog from a stay, then your at liberty recall will definitely suffer.
I was wondering the same thing: what if you need him but can't physically reach him?
As a dog trainer myself, I make the same basic point to my clients. Great job of explaining.
If your a dog trainer you should know that there is not one formula of training. It all depends on the owners and dog's needs and skills. So if you tell this to all your clients you should reconstruct your training method.
@@feministlactosevegan4022 Agreed. But also agree that this is not especially good training advice.
I’ve also been using your tactile release and it has made a huge difference! At 9 weeks old and hardly trying at all, he will not go until I touch his nose. Thanks again!!
Trusted me guys these methods.this guy really knows The tips I learned is just great
Very valuable! Thank you for sharing this!
Well done. This make me realize I did this mistake, thanks I will recorrect it. Super!
Seriously man.. thank you for all that you do!!! Your videos have made my GSD an amazing animal. I spend a ton of time with her and she’s service cert so obedience is a must. Thank you for all your help!!
The best advise on STAY on the internet!! Thank you young man
You are just straight forward which I love about you plus your appreciated experience in appropriate dog training. Keep it up and you will reach 1 M subscriber in a short time. Thanks again. SUBSCRIBED 🙌
Daaaaannnng, this makes so much sense.
@Robert Cabral pretty cool video. Its nice to see another dog teacher using negative markers. And you are so correct about the use of the negative markers. They should never be used in anger or frustration. Dogs pick up on those emotions rather easily. When you feeling anger or frustration its time to take a break and have some play time. I know a good game of tug can get out a lot of the frustrations. But its important to never give up, your dog will learn. You just need to be patient and calm during dog teaching.
I have been watching lot many training videos. I would say Robert is the best. Kudos...
That was really good. Helpful. Thanks!!
I love this. I trained my white German shepherd with "raining kitty food" since the day I got her. *subbed* wonderful stuff! LOVE you Goofy! 🐺
I have (and my pup) learned SO MUCH from your videos! Thank you...thank you...thank you!🐾😃🐾
Glad you our willing to help (US) rookie trainers!
This is so helpful!! Thank you!
Thanks again Robert. Another great video and sit means stay without saying the actual word. Great teaching technique for dogs and people.
AMAZING! Thank you!!! Makes so much sense!!!
Thank you so much. I am learning all i can before buying my forever friend, German Shepherd. I was told they get along with horses also. So excited to buy my puppy.
Great video please keep updating them
Very informative video as per usual from you.
This makes so much sense! Thank you!
what a healthy, obedient dog!
Great video! Just learned why Sheba does not stay sitting! Thank u ever do much! A 1y/o German Shepard with no former training rescued is a force to reckon with! I’m not giving up! K9 University first trip had her sitting and heeling but u gave me the tools I need to get trained! Bless u!!
Just had a moment, have to go watch every video now. Great content.
Bro good bro...u trained ur dog well..this video help me lot .am also a owner of malinos ..very nice this video..I appreciate ur interest on him ...😊
Ha, I just not found this video and I am glad I did. My mentor is the only other person I know of or have seen that teaches this same exact thing. When he first taught me this concept I was a bit surprised because I did this with my dog, lol. THANK YOU!
Excellent instructional Video. Thanks. It reinforces what I am trying to do with my girl, which is needed to know I am still on the right track. I use 2 different words. I only use the word “stay” IF and ONLY IF I am returning to the dogs side. If I am going to call the dog to me, I use the word “wait” I had an awful lot of bad training advice from a “qualified” trainer ( I only found out later that she had an online qualification and very, very, very little hands on experience). As a novice myself at the time I didn’t realise that what she was teaching was dreadful. I am now in training myself to teach agility so thankfully I know better. However, I have been left with a dog that mainly does as she is commanded, but if something better is around she can become disobedient. I have had to go back to basic training to try to unteach all the bad things I was teaching her and rewarding her for. What makes me mad about the entire thing is that I was made to feel like a bad person whenever I tried to question something. I suppose actually I was, simply because, I not only listened to her, but did as she said also. The woman is still teaching, but not many people attend her classes and leave after a few sessions to go elsewhere.
Love your training videos! I train and compete in IGP , and pick up many tips from you!!!
I really like your techniques Mr. Cabral...
Thank you for the tip.
You are a beast Mr Cabral! I have a puppy silky terrier that's been challenging at times to train, he get excited and distracted so easy.
Excellent advice....thank you
luv ur videos, u helped me a lot, thanks
Thank you! Anticipation. Train right or go home!
Omg thank you 🙏 helpful nice mal
Best video on sit/stay I have seen ,makes perfect sense once you show it here, I have been doing it all wrong , using hand signals for sit , hand signal for stay, which he understands , then i release with a hand signal as well as the spoken command of "let's go" but if i lengthen the wait time on the release, he always breaks the sit/stay , he's only good for about 45 seconds at the moment and only if i am facing him , if i turn my back , he is no longer listening or obeying, my Shepherd is very eager to please, follows me right at my side ,always touching my leg no mater where i go , not sure i like him doing this ,kinda gets annoying when it's all day long , My female shepherd doesnt do this , she just hangs out on the couch and isnt attached at my hip literally
Great video! Found this very helpful as we are wanting to get our first dog.
Very important notes 🔥
that was all brilliant sir .....
Omg! Thank you so much!!! My 6 month old white shepherd is ready!
Excellent stuff 🤟😎 Too many people do great training and then nullify its effectiveness by encouraging a distant release without realizing the underlying reinforcement value such methods bestow. Inspiring as always. 👏😎
Great video thank you !!!!
Awesome Content! Very informative 💛💙👍🐶
Fantastic..........love what you are doing here..
Well explained and rational approach. I like it. Thank you for posting this video, it was valuable.
*Amazing understanding !*
Man you are so good at this
Omg you don’t know how much this video just helped me.
I wish i found your videos when my dog was younger. Good thing i had more sence then to listen whole heartedly to zak george lol
Love this video thank you
He’s outsmarting the trainer by presenting the command. Thanks for sharing. You got right to the meat 🥩 and bones 🦴 with the info. I learned a bunch.
You are amazing! Thank you
awesome video! I dont think many people know the difference between telling their dog to sit, and to stay.
Yeeeees now I understand the mistake I am making...THANK YOU
This is Incredible Ron
Wow!!!! Goofy and you really make a great team...very interesting video! I’m sharing on FB😁
Very good...thank you
Wow, this is why my 2 month old rottweiler was breaking his stay! Great work, thank you! Subscribed!!!
Cool just got the fi collar with your discount code! Really love your videos!
I think a lot of the “Sit” then “Come” chaining come from CGC training. Good video! People are oblivious to their own behavioral patterns.
Great piece! locking forward for the recall on pray mode video
Great techniques!
This makes sense, the sit and stay command.
Great video! Thanks. I always go back to my dog with praise and a release. I train hunting dogs. My question is if you put your dog in a sit command. What happens is something happens and you need your dog at heel or such.
Well that's a good lesson thanks
Great point
Wo great content. Thank you
Thank you so much!!!!!!
Interesting. Thank you
