I hope you get more exposure, this is gold advice. I have already caught myself doing several things you list as mistakes. Knowing what to change in my training with my dog makes a world of difference. Instead of coming from the ignorant place of "well she's just so stubborn. She can't be trained, etc" I turn that around on myself and go "hang on, I can learn new things, I'm not without hope, so neither is my dog."

The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the kzhead.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.
I have watched (and tried the advice of) many dog trainers (some pretty famous in the US), but these videos are the best advice I have seen. These tips really do work. I hope Mr. Atherton is getting the exposure he deserves, because he can realistically help many dogs, and their owners. And he works helping rescue dogs, too! That shows both knowledge and compassion. Keep up the great work!

Absolutely best video I've seen in a while. Too many people get dogs and know nothing about the breed or mix of breeds and this is why so many dogs (especially during the teenage phase) end up being re-homed or sent to shelters. If people would do more research they and their dogs would be much happier. My oldest daughter wanted a dog since she was a little girl and then decided she wanted a Siberian Husky when she was about 10. I told her that if she could do the research and prove to me that she knew enough about the breed and could handle everything needed to train the dog and meet the dogs requirements such as energy level then we would talk about it. She came back to me when she was 12 with a whole presentation about Siberian Huskies. At that time I was also fostering dogs and puppies for a small rescue in our area and most of the dogs or puppies I took in were the ones who just needed a week or two to work on obedience so my daughter was helping with the training of those dogs and listening to how I explained things to her. She proved to me that she knew enough and could handle a Husky so I told her that we could start looking for a breeder within our price range. We found one together and they have been together ever since. Her Husky is 9 years old and is a very very good representation of good research and training as she is also my daughter's Psychiatric Service Dog and everyone compliments her on not only her looks because she is gorgeous and my daughter brushes her every day but also how well behaved she is. We started her training on the very first day we brought her home.

The same principles hold true with children. The problem is getting the slip leash to fit their skinny necks
I hope that second part of your statement is/was sarcastic. And you have another problem with kids and this is that you need about 25 years to have results. And treets are way more expenssive...as they get older! And if this is trolling please find another channal!!!

The 'Not letting the dog sniff everything' bit I find really difficult. My female shepweiler (now 1 year old) sniffs every-()*&&^ng thing, I've stopped her in the past the problem was she does this before peeing or pooing and forcing her to march on at my pace doesn't generally end well however she also takes the pee too because I struggle to tell the difference between her sniffing prior to doing her business or simply checking up on doggie social media posts.
I saw a video from another trainer that said to have them go do their business in their normal spot and then go!for a walk which would help you tell the sniffing difference hopefully. You can practice heeling and structured walk for a bit and then let them off with more sniffing freedom.

Thanks Will for sharing your knowledge with us. You have no idea how much I use your words over anyone else's when it comes to my Canè Corso. Even over his in house trainer I often picked what I liked and substituted the rest with your words of wisdom. Either from your KZhead or the free online clinics you offered. My biggest regret is that I didn't see your free clinics sooner bc the one about recall is amazing and it literally worked in a day. However, I was already on the other end of it. Where he knows exactly what I want, he just didn't do it. So, I used your training and switched the recall to a specific sound when I whistle and made it the most exciting thing he came to every time. Now, when he hears it no matter where he is, he comes FLYING to me. And I started that simple thing you taught within the corridor of our hallway and his kibble first thing in the morning, when he was nice and hungry & eager to work for it. Thank you! Love these videos will, I've found them infinitely helpful. I know the odds of you getting back to me are slim to none but here goes: Me and my girlfriend have just rescued a stray husky (collie cross I think, very small). Her temperament is amazing and she's a good girl all round, what we are having trouble with is her lead behaviour. We've recently brought a slip lead which helps allot but she still tries to pull ahead on it, especially when she spots a squirrel or another dog. The strange thing is that she doesn't play with any of her toys except the food based ones so it's hard to break her prey drive. We've also been trying to incorporate treat based training on her lead, giving her one whenever she walks well (next to or behind the leader), however even the local park is too distracting for her to focus on the treats that we try to give her and she ends up just ignoring them. She's a very strange girl but we love her to bits and this is the only real trouble that we're having with her. Thanks for the insightful videos man

I know there’s probably no chance to get an answer, but I thought that I heard you say you would not bring your dog to the dog park… He just gets so much out of socializing and exercise. But I would rather take your advice!
Bradley, have you tried slowly increasing the distractions? First at home in a room with no distraction > room with distractions > garden with no distractions > garden with distractions > calm street > more busy street > ... when she pulls too much at a specific increase simply go back a step and rinse and repeat, this could take weeks / months so be patient, also higher distractions deserve higher treats so maybe get out something she really likes when you up the distractions

I'm so happy that your videos showed up in my feed, I haven't had a dog in twenty years and I was fortunate enough to get a three month old Dogo Argentino, very strong and stubborn dog but I love her with all my heart, and since everyone in my family has passed away, she is all I have in this world that means anything to me, with that being said I have made many mistakes, but now we have good information and are working together and within the first twenty minutes, she is responding very well, thank you so much!!!
I really appreciate all of your videos, currently trying to use your techniques to teach my 8 year old Shepherd Mix who had stayed at my Dad’s place for a few years until I got my own home and could have my own dog, along with a 1 year old Bulldog Mix. They’re not model dogs yet, but I think with your help, I can turn these good boys into some of the best boys.

I can't tell you how grateful I am to have found an amazing balanced trainer to take on my dog--a trainer who rarely uses treats and isn't afraid of humane corrections (e.g., prong collars, e-collars that don't shock, and canned air). It's such a relief to know that I don't have to treat my dog like a fragile wreck in order to "protect" him or "make up" for his abusive past. In fact, doing just that has MADE him into a fragile wreck, and now I basically need this trainer to save my dog (and me) from not only my babying tendencies, but the bullshit "techniques" I learned from my last trainer and other positive-only practitioners.

It was very slow going with my dog. I got him off a family who didn’t really want him. Was horribly reactive. No leash training. He’s amazing now. You and Tom saved him. Btw working line black lab

Amazing the amount of advice, technique, and information we get is astonishing and greatly appreciated! I have a 7 month old Cane Corso, I’ve been following most of your structure: Sit, Stay etc. just wanted your input as to some realistic expectations for Her? Love what you said about them not liking every dog, being that she’s Corso (Pure) I do know she’s guardian breed and I’ve noticed examples of that throughout training her For example: my wife and I also have 2 chihuahuas and 2 large breed cats loves them to bits, no aggression gentle giant (was very specific when finding what became her as a companion. However my 2 yr old and I have taken her to the dog park for the first time the last 2 days… ultimately because she’s a protector and I cant guarantee others safety ( being that shed be loose with X number other dogs whilst still learning), the parks great in the sense there’s 3 separate areas.. I go to one by myself not hard as untrained eye she could be mistaken for pit etc. anyhow my point is no matter what dog she sees outside the house she’s hair up and more verbal. Doesn’t bother me dogs bark but, trying to gauge her because I feel from what I’m seeing and given my 2 yr old is with me she’s in a mixed emotion of I wanna trust you but, I don’t know if your coming for my people. Ultimately I’m super proud of her she n ver barks at home unless a passer by, gentle giant, doesn’t lunge whilst playing for a toy in your hand, hardly jumps up, doesn’t cover your face in drool…. Not sure her life before being with my wife and I but I had to work very closely with her to even understand how to kiss, how to attempt walking on a leash… was just curious to what some reasonable expectations I could expect. This is the an issue I have with my 95 lb. Bully. After one or two tugs she’s on her way, I want her to move when I need her to move instead of stalling and acting like she’s sniffing around just to be stubborn. Working on it and glad I found this informative video. Thanks!😊

Hi, I am a 70 year old male who has owned numerous dogs both working and non working. My current dog is an Australian Shepherd, owned one previously. I have had Sophie since she was a puppy, she is now 3. Walking on the leash is the biggest headache ever. I know a tired dog is a happy dog, but trying to tire her out on a walk is impossible. I have tried all kinds of collars without success, currently using a slip leash that has helped some. Is a prong collar a good tool, I have never used one before. Thanks in advance for your input.
Will has mentioned many times that a pronged collar can be a great tool to use. We use one with one of our dogs. It's not a magic tool, but it does help in the use of heel training.
Is pulling the issue?
Personally I focus more on training my dogs then walking them. I used to think taking them for a walk was ultimate excercise and they would be happy and tierd after but it's not the case. So what has worked for me is focus on Obediance training. Sit stay heel down etc and making sure they are clear on thier commands. When they have done the Obediance portion (which tires them out actually) then we may go for a walk and use the walk as a reward (with plenty of treats for good heeling beside my leg) it doesn't even have to be a long walk. 15 min usually does the trick especially if we've worked on Obediance previously. Thus guy here has many amazing videos I follow for tips and tricks
Prong collars are now illegal in Australia 🇦🇺 they work great though. Try a correction collar tuck it right under the chin

I have an olde English bulldogge 17 weeks old. I have been told I can't have a proper color and lead and just to have a harness. So how do I go about the lead training you're instructor was telling us about.
Another great video, Will. Thank you. Maybe you can make something about mental exercise (together with physical). I think that lot of people just relay on physicaly training their dogs. And that with some breeds (like Mallinoa's or Terriers in that way you can easyly make some kind of 'dog lunatics'...Adicted to ball or frisbee or something like this. And also importance of some stop or release command when owner decide that game is over. I do not mean that you can't play with them or train them. I just mean that they need to do other things like sniffing or just simple walking. My Belgian/German shep.mix could retrieve for ever when she was jounger. And I needed to say: 'enough; no more!' And put ball in my pocket or frisbee in bag which was clue to her to start doing something else.

Loved the bit about the breeds. Was considering a malanois as was wanting the opposite from my low drive, senior boxer. After much research realised a mal would 100% not be for me but still love watching them train. Now have a 13wk old GSP (primarily for canicross) and wow! could not be more different from our boxer- I got all the energy and drive I was looking for but in a pup that can't really be exercised yet and is still learning manners! We work hard together every day, I've been wearing the same puppy bitten clothes for 5 wks now, spent infinite potty breaks out in the pouring rain at all times of the day and am running my business in two hour snatches (although ex-pen plus pizzles and kongs giving me a bit more time now too) - it's hard work. I'm so grateful for all of your content. Thank you.

It’s about time we had our own dog whisperer in the uk, someone who talks our language and shows us how to have a well behaved dog, my dogs live in my home there not in cages as I don’t like them but that’s just me, yes they bark when someone knocks the door yes they jump up, yes I do lots of things wrong, that’s why I’m here on your channel for as much help I can get,I would have you come for a cuppa and tell me where I’m going wrong, but I’m too far lol I have a toy poodle 15 year’s old a poochon 8 years old and a 7 month old cockapoo, I’m disabled and can’t move fast and all the 7 month old cockapoo boy is doing is barking nonstop at the 8 year old any thing she has he wants and won’t stop until I give it to him, we are going out of our minds and don’t no what to do, can you help hugs Julie x
We've just got a pronged collar and once our trainer got him conditioned to it our walks have completely changed in a few sessions. Now it's on to the obedience now
It's disgusting that people still use these. It's a form of punishment training that uses pain and discomfort as the bargaining chips to make your dog 'obedient' or 'stop pulling'. Whilst at times you seemingly get instant results, the long-term effect on your dogs physical and mental wellbeing could be costly. You or a trainer getting your dog 'used' to it, is just the dog learning not to react or the discomfort it causes has forced your dog not to react. Either way, you're putting your dog through discomfort because for whatever reason you didn't want to spend time training them with modern positive reinforcement techniques that are proven to achieve better results whilst being ethically sound. If you're in the UK I'd start switching up your training as the movement to ban them is growing. But no matter where you are, I'd get a new trainer and do some more research into the effects of punishment training and pronged collars. Especially in comparison to positive reinforcement techniques.
@MorAodhan the trainer I use is brilliant she comes highly recommended. Have you ever worn a pronged collar? Because I have and it doesn't hurt me so it's not hurting the dog at all. The pronged collar wasn't the first thing we tried we have tried numerous methods and they never helped but the pronged collar has! Now me and my dog go on lovely stress free walks.
And we can now dive deeper in to his obedience training

Hi , I've watched the video where the puppy is biting and I did exactly what you did and he stopped for that night but day after hes now growing and still trying to mount me . I still do what I've seen you do but hes hyper . Please advise if you have time. Thanks Andy

I agree with you with the dog park for the most part I am very lucky to have a dog park that’s amazing and people who speak for there dogs for what they are and are not okay with so no fights have ever happened and there hasn’t been dogs upset either becuse the owners know how to speak for there dog there temperament and how they are Manet wise and even if there fixed or not becuse that can be important too becuse intact males can be dormant and my dog dosnt like that at all and there’s 2 spots where we go so the dogs that are best together play together is they don’t okay well with other play on one side along it’s truly an amazing fenced in place I have done much off leash traing there becuse the distraction is grate for practice with his recall

i have a dog, she has extreme issues with leash reactivity and a pulling issue. ive used prong collars, excessive training, etc. thing is, shes a stubborn xl bully whos still a puppy. it is extremely EXTREMELY HARD trying to teach her off those behaviours. She can wait, shake, sit, all of those type of stuff. except for those two, any tips?
Omg! My bf let's my dogs run up and say hi to strangers on leash sometimes and I drive me nuts. Of course he doesn't see the problem... First reason for me is be polite and considerate in public. Second reason is I know not everyone likes dogs and I can't trust people I don't know not to be weird

You have to do what ever it takes for your dog, if you won't to help him/her to feel safer and better in this world. Spetial needs dogs need more everything; not less, compared to other dogs. More work, more love, simply ....more!
@@kokoro9301 my dad is the worst! He belives teaching your dog sit/stay whatever makes your dog dumb??? Like he has a bird hunting dog that only know how to hunt (in my opinion not very good at it) and he thinks if he teached his dog sit then the dog would know hunting worse. When I got my first dog I believed him because his my dad and he has had dogs before, so I listened to everything he said. Socializing? No need to! Puppy meet ups/ training? Stupid! Teaching your dog things? Only makes him dumper! Fortunately ive learned later on my dad dont know shit about dogs and I have a dog that is close to exploding everytime we meet dogs/people
What boots is Will wearing?
The Dog I am going to adopt eventually I take her every weekend. She barked at a Horse I jabbed her and did the shhh! She stopped straight away. She barked at walkers, dogs etc 😮💨 She’s a bright one she is sussing stuff 😁 We are learning the fundamentals stay, recall, heel etc.

NOOO never too early. Start with the first meal of the day. Use his links and do his free clinics at minimum and you'll see starting at this stage will yield you some excellent results for that breed. I started my Canè Corso literally a few days after we brought him home at 8 weeks.

Brilliant channel Will. I have had many dogs in my life "all rescued dogs" because I don't like the idea of people breeding dogs for money. I lost my very sweet little " Lola" ( half staffy and half Jack Russell ) a few months ago. Had her from a puppy for 12 years. We decided to get another dog from "The Dogs Trust". She is half Lab and half Collie and was 10 months old when we got her. She is now a year old and was a little difficult but she has definitely improved after watching your videos. I especially loved the video on how to stop them from pulling and using the "Slip Lead Properly". Got a slip lead and followed your instructions from that video and what an amazing change. My dog doesn't really care about balls, Frisbee or other things like that for fetch. Oddly enough she loves the ball with feather on a stick that is used to play with cats. I'm wondering if there is a toy similar for dogs that we can play tug o war with and not worry about it breaking or something she might chase that I just haven't seen yet
Check out a tether tug. A big stick that goes in the ground, long rope and ball on the end.

He follows my leg. i do tran turns and he follows, i do give him txeats and also corrections but ... when he see Other dog he goes crazy. Till Will answer you can try to 1.follow thatboart of the video where other guy is talking and giving example with ball (which is representing another dog. But this can be bird/squrel/any other thing which your dog finds eather interesting or it drives your dog crasy! 2.go to places with less dogs, don't go to the places with unfamiliar and/or bad behaved dogs... 3.if your dog has dog to dog reactivity my advice is to make 'U turn' and go away from other dogs to a safe distance! For one of my dogs safe distance is 'as far as possible' from barking dogs or dogs with to high energy. He is 6,5 years old DA male and I don't expect from him any meeting with unfamiliar dogs. But, I don't alow him to chase or fight or do anything like this. For him I have eather 20 m long leash and harness eather free walk in the wood with muzzle on eather slip lead and shirt collar. And only dogs for unsupervised play are my ither 2 dogs in our yard. I hope that this helped a little. Regards from me and my pack. So what do you do when your dog breed is unknown??? The previous owner wasn't a good one so I have no idea the dog's age or breed and he has a lot of bad habits due to being neglected. Any advice from anyone would be lovely!

Man im trying to train my dog with the help of videos like this and others... She just simply doesnt understand or maybe shes stubborn... Shes 4 months old but is driving me crazy... A bichon /german mix
He has free clinics on his website. However tbh once you actually complete those it and see how successful it is, you'll want to actually pay for the courses. Yes, they may be pricey for some in these crazy financial times. However, he is the best priced and they also do frequently offer something like 20% off when you purchase a simple item like his frequent awesome Thor has hammer. My dog LOVES that thing. It was too huge for him at first but really helped him build up strength in his neck in no time. Like days. Aside from his free clinics and stuff you should try, if you haven't already, to have a consistent training schedule w/ your pup every morning and don't use too many YT videos bc you'll become overwhelmed with all the different styles. Get an actual book and start to create a structured schedule for you & pup from morning on and use all mealtime for training. Saves you money on treats and also hand feeding like that helps limit food aggression later on down the line. Make a list of all the problem behaviors and find the solutions from his videos or where u choose and dedicate at minimum 15 mins before breakfast and any other time that works best for you during day to get training in. Then, during every single interaction with him during the day you implement the exact things you trained with during a session. Like if you are working on sit/stay this morning before bkfst then while you get ready to go walk and are outside you use same method, tone or gesture to reinforce it. Etc. Treat every moment as a teachable one. Consistency is key as well as staying calm and becoming the best thing since sliced... kibble lol , to your dog and you should start to see some progress. And make sure everyone in the house, even the kids, use the same exact technique. And keep em on a lead in the house always until you see her is responsible enough to make good decisions without one. Sometimes that might be never w/ some dogs. Happened w/ my vets well trained Rottweiler.
Sorry for the super long response btw but I wanted to give you some advice from my experience. Granted my dog is not hard to train so that could probably be it. I have a Canè Corso and they are very eager to please. So if I wanna train he becomes hyper focused and ready to work. I don't use treats anymore bc I wanted to make sure a dog this size will listen to my little ass immediately when I give a command. But I absolutely started out with "treats" but I used kibble mainly and carried it in a pouch on my waist. I still do take it out sometimes when I wanna reinforce something I see him slipping on or just try something new that I see is a little difficult to get him to focus on. Like look at me lol. I've been trying to train in to look at me since he was 10 weeks old. He is 6 months old and he will only look up at me when I say his name. Not if I say look or something else. Eh I'll take whatever works though. Anyway I hope at least some of the crap I shared helps a little bit. It's quite possible I said all that and you're like umm been there done that lol. I'm no pro. I just thought I'd share the little I learned as I started out just like you and quickly found myself overwhelmed with all the different opinions from different trainers on YT. I chose my top 3 favs and I went from there for my own training and I also hired a trainer to come to my house and teach him basic obedience and loose leash walking. That helped create a better foundation but I had started before him so I did some of the work for him lol. Maybe worth it to try that as well if it's an option for you. Good luck 🤞 you got this!
