Picture this: You're on a date and things are going pretty well. You have chemistry, a lot of the same interests and even though you're only half way through the meal you've begun planning how to get to work from their place the next morning. Then they start talking about their tattoos and you see it. The '90s tribal peeking out from underneath a sleeve and it's a complete dealbreaker. You pay the bill and walk home. We all think about how if we add just the right tattoos we'll become the sexiest beast on Earth, but the opposite is true, there are some tattoos out there that will guarantee that you never get laid. We asked our artists what their absolute dealbreakers are.

Holy crap. He actually tattooed his face on his then-significant other. He's a tattoo artist, there's NO WAY he didn't know exactly what he was doing (ask any artist what tattoos are a terrible idea, it will be one of the first to come up). This dude is an utter jerk. Yikes.

I've dated a guy once, and he was so so nice, but man... it was a huge combo: he had a poorly done tiger in his forearm he did at 16, a koi fish covering the ex's name, also poorly done bc some scales were black, others were red, and I could still read "adele" underneath it. He made an enormous lion in his ribs, and it's pretty well done but still a lion, you know. Recently he has finished his leg and it contains a watch... I swear he's a sweet guy, but his tattoos did make me think his life decisions are not quite good...

Jason's right: There is no reason to get bad tattoos nowadays. Artists have great portfolios, you can check everyone's stuff out and compare, you can find their clients and maybe ask about the artist, there's ratings on the internet. If someone gets a bad tattoo today, they're stupid and cheap, and none of those are things you should be with something that's gonna stay on your body your entire life.
There is: tattoo is privilege it cost a lot, so if you can have a not expensive tattoo, you dive in. Also in jail you don't choose too much. I don't know what those tattoo artists have in their minds. They probably did some crap tattoos in friends or any another person willing helping to start their carreir. Why be like this?
@@xthieryx Honestly (and I'm not speaking for prison tattoos here, but for the aesthetic body art), if you're not willing to invest, then don't get tattooed. Tattoos in most cases are a one-time thing, nothing you can just exchange for a better model after a few years. If you can't afford a good artist, wait, save up, anything really. I'd rather wait longer but have a prettier tattoo that I'll like to look at forever than get it done really fast, but have it look bad. But I agree: Tattoos are a privilege if seen that way, just like high quality clothing or jewelry, with the very big difference it being on your body for the rest of your life. Like I said, you can't trade it in for a better one after a while. You have to get it right the first time. And that's why you should always find an artist based on their work, not on their price. I get what you mean about them shitting on other people's tattoos, though. But people judge others all the time, as long as you don't say it loud to hurt someone, it's alright, kinda natural, I guess. And as someone who works in the industry I understand that a badly done tattoo might bum you out.
A lot of people don't know what a proper good tattoo looks like. There's a guy in my town who isn't really good, but he has a walk in shop so everybody goes there (same price as other artists it's pretty standard here) a bunch of people are raving him eventho it's plagued with blowouts and wonky lines.
For the same reason there's no excuse to get a bad plumber or a bad... anything? Sometimes even great professionals have bad days, and sometimes you don't know anything about a subject and wouldn't recognize a good job if it hit you in the face
Some people got bad tattoos cuz they were tryna support their friend and be their first customer or whatever. I know that’s stupid but people actually do that

There are a lot of people who aren’t interested enough in art to be able to recognize good work. Clients and tattooers alike. Some tattoos obviously started from a bad drawing. There’s kind of no hope for someone if they can’t recognize major issues at that stage. I don’t think it says they (clients) don’t respect tattooing, or are stupid or lazy like some of these responses implied though. That’s kind of a leap.
Yeah, I found some answers in this one really questionable! It said more about the character of some tattoo artists here than the “stupid clients”. Like chill, at the end of the day, it's just a tattoo and should make the person happy and not anyone else.

I think it’s funny that although they’re in an industry of self expression they are conventional when it comes to judging others tattoos decisions lol Heartening actually.
Some of them have some pretty bad tattoos themselves. And for the ones who were on Ink Master, like Angel and Creepy Jason, there’s video of them giving bad tattoos.

Plenty of space you can cover with clothing but you chose to get one that shows. Just good for thought to keep people thinking. I have tattoos I dislike on certain people too. I have HORRIFIC arachnophobia (I mean like legit PTSD) so if someone had a very detailed tattoo of a spider it'd be an instant deal breaker. There's also the usual stuff like people's names (unless they're of a pet or your kid or a deceased loved one or something like that) but none of them would be as instant of a deal breaker as a spider tattoo. I don't need to have a PTSD panic attack every time we hang out. I'm already going prematurely grey.

I was scrolling through the inkbox website a couple months ago and there was a whole section of super detailed spider tattoo designs and I am still a little twitchy from some of them.

@@Homie1Kenobie Ok except this isn't some childhood fear. This is a legitimate trigger caused by a spider bite that landed me in the ICU and caused an actual case of post traumatic stress disorder. And by actual case I mean legitimately diagnosed by a doctor, seconded by another doctor, and written down in my medical file. Not some general phobia. And I think it is completely fair to not want someone in your life because a tattoo they have permanently on their skin causes actual flashbacks to a very legitimate trauma and can negatively impact your mental health. Or to not want someone with a white supremacist tattoo in your life. If you still think all of this is childish or petty then there is literally nothing anyone can say or do that would change your mind so I'm not going to argue beyond clearing up any confusion about how PTSD is not just about childish phobias and that people with it need to just "grow up".

When I was young I saw a tattoo on my uncle and realized that if I ever saw something similar on a guy then I'd nope right out of there. My uncle had a beer gut and had to lift his belly a bit to show the whole tattoo, it was a 25¢ coin slot under his belly button and above it read "painful pleasure" and under it read "ride" like 25¢ ride. Like Jesus man, talk about scarring children at the pool. But besides that, if someone has "career killer" tattoos as their only tattoos, or if someone has racist tattoos or hentai tattoos.

My first tattoo was on my face: a blue star on my cheek. It symbolizes my survival and healing through child abuse and other of my life's hardships. I wear it on my face so I can see it every morning, especially the days when my PTSD gets the better of me. If these people want to judge someone else's life decisions, they have lots to learn about compassion and understanding.

Thank you! Nobody should be offended about their answers. They were asked for their opinions. Some I agreed with, some I didn't. Everybody has different standards in what they want in a partner vs a friend, both aesthetically and as people. Tattoos are a part of what a person looks like, and they CAN in some cases say something about the person themselves. All of these artists were very kind when giving their opinion, they never said they assumed anyone was a BAD person, just not the right person for them as a romantic partner. And that's ok.

Okay but i got a bad tattoo on my thigh like three month ago. It was my third tattoo and all i wanted was a couple of words in another language. I know the language, i know what it means and it has a special meaning to me. I knew the tattoo artist from school, his works are good and we talked about this tattoo. I dunno if he secretly hates me or if he wasn't feeling it that day but he fucked it up. First he fucked up the letters, changing some of the details and second he fucked up in the process and a few letters started to blur on the second day. All the letters are shaky and have different thickness in a few places. It was the tattoo that i really wanted and now its the tattoo that i feel ashamed of.

It also could be a sign of impulse control and performative (but hollow) acts of devotion. If a man or woman tattoos your name on their skin but the relationship is toxic, they're proving nothing. Don't tattoo my name, JUST TREAT ME WELL AND BE THERE FOR ME.

For some reason, I feel so bad for them hating like the "common tattoos". If a lion with a rose or a crown or even a clock makes someone happy, why the hell not? Like traditional tattoo images are done to death and still going, so what? Weird thing to hate on, IMHO.
Agree that it's a very weird thing to shame and gatekeep, especially when this said group already gets a bunch of shit thrown at them from non-tattooed folk. Seems pretty hypocritical to tell non-tattooed people to "respect my choices on my own body/tattoos don't define me as a person" and simultaneously shit on common tattoos you personally don't like to a point where you wouldn't even consider dating a person with one. Just an outsider take on this as I have no tattoos (but plan on getting some in the future).

I have such mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, people should get tattoos of whatever makes them happy. On the other hand, I would personally get turned off seeing a lion/wolf/cliche large predatory mammal tattoo, because in my own experience it seems like a lot of people who get those have the same personality trait of justifying their lack of social awareness by claiming that they’re somehow a league above, a natural loner who isn’t meant to be liked by people who don’t understand how badass they are. 🙄 It’s not fair to the perfectly lovely people with those tattoos, who I’m sure exist. But boy is seeing one of those a turn off for me.
