Treadle hammers vs tire hammers (and which one I would choose first)

I use both the Clay Spencer in-line treadle hammer and Clay Spencer tire hammers in my shop on a daily basis. They’re both phenomenal tools. In this video I give a video reply to an email from an instagram follower, Herb where he asked my opinion on them and which one I would choose first. I hope this helps!

  • As a long time hobbyist blacksmith with many years of using both treadle hammers and trip hammers,, I think you did a great job here. George Dixon used to say of the treadle hammer: "It's like having a striker who never comes in late or drunk".

  • Your thoughts on the spring power hammer, the type that uses an automotive spring. Thanks for all the knowledge and encouragement you bring to everyone.

  • Treadle hammer is next on my shop acquisitions to use like you said as a striker. Due to budget not as nice as one as yours but going to get the ChristCenteredIronWorks kit. Great video and just confirmed my thought process

    • Roy is making a good kit. Those style of treadle hammers are just as useful. You’ll love it.

  • Great video! Both are great tools and I agree that they both have their place. If I were in the market and budget was not my number one concern I would be tempted to go with fast and hard striking tire hammer first.

  • I have a scanned PDF copy of the swing arm Gade-Marx style treadle hammer. I'm in the process of building one now as my friend has a lot of the spare parts kicking around already.

  • Hey how good is the treadle hammer for breaking down stock no larger than. 2" round? There's very few videos on these being used for drawing out. * to expensive for me to get a powerd version*

  • I li e in a residential area, can the tire hammer run on a dirt floor? And if not what kinda foundation? I have an attached garage and a neighbor 20 ft from said garage. If it can be anchored to dirt, how far will it vibrate?

    • Your neighbor will hear and feel it.

  • But can you realistically draw down with a treadle hammer faster than by hand?

    @richjmaynard@richjmaynard Жыл бұрын
    • No, treadle hammer isn’t suited for that kind of work. Think “hey, I could really use a striker right now” That is what a treadle hammer is for

      @derekmelton@derekmelton Жыл бұрын
    • Maybe not faster, but sometimes "smarter"? Trade a dozen hammer blows for a few leg presses, and give your arm a rest. With flat dies, you can smooth out and straighten easily, it's like having a striker hitting a flatter. With tapered open or closed dies, you can finish forging tapers on square or round, to be consistent and smooth.
