03:41 Consequential damage caused by a defective timing belt
04:39 Looking behind the oil sump at the oil pump
05:01 Urgent recommendation for timing belt repair
05:40 Conclusion
We take a closer look at the wet timing belt from the 1.2 PureTech engines. Over time, the belt can become cracked and swell. In the worst case, it will break and cause enormous damage to the engine.
We go into the replacement interval and the problem. Why does the timing belt come apart? When should a wet timing belt be changed? How can I check my timing belt?
Even after changing the wet timing belt, there may be problems with the engine. We shed light on what causes this and where the abrasion from the old timing belt is deposited. The abrasion can cause extreme clogging on the oil pump and vacuum pump.

  • These were introduced because it gave a longer service interval and lower emissions. The manufacturers say premature failures are because of the wrong oil and poor maintenance. Sadly this has been proved wrong correct oil and even more frequent oil changes have not saved many engines. This has resulted in replacement engines and even if repaired the costs can rapidly mount until it is almost uneconomic to repair. As for belt changes a bill for £1000 to £1500 is not uncommon if rubber particles are found in the oil pick up to the oil pump , resulting in replacement of the oil pump and the pick up. The PSA and Ford engines are time bombs. I notice that Hyundai has kept with a chain for its 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine . I have not heard of any failures of this engine as of yet.

  • Timing chain yes but who in there right mind would have a rubber belt inside an engine! Fools .. We was looking at purchasing a 108 1.2 litre as its suggested this engine is better suited than the 900cc unit but the smaller engine I believe has the conventional external dry belt so that would be the safer bet also with the wet belt replacement with all the required parts , oil change and potentially new brake/ oil pumps and sump off to check for blockages would be astronomical with the labour change and I expect it would have to-be main dealer as your local garage probably won't have the necessary tooling to do the job! I think this is all a big plan to make us pay more for scheduld maintanance and to run a far greater risk of engine failure, not a car I would be able to drive with peace of mind and confidence and I expect this 3 cylinder 1.2 litre application is in other manufacturers superminis so as I did please do your resurch before you part with your hard earned cash especially if it's a used car with no warranty or weather a warranty claim would cover consumable because I'm sure peugeot are aware this is a silly design fault so unless the belt is checked within a basic interim oil service which I doubt it is how would you know the condition of the wet belt! Be warned and steer clear, plenty of other small car brand's to choose from or go for the smaller unit !

  • Everybody notices it... yet what most people don't know is that wet belts are on a lot of cars. Take the 2.0 TDi from VAG, that can have a wet belt for the oil pump. Absolute nightmare to get to, nobody knows which engine it's on and there's no service intervals for it.

  • Very good video. Unfortunately the PureTech engine has too many design flaws. Mine gave up via the belt and oil leaks at 105,000 km. Sad to see that customer services (Peugeot for me) are not at all up to scratch and find every excuse not to participate in the cost of repairs.

    • To ensure a long life for the oil-immersed rubber timing belt, it is essential to adhere to service intervals and, above all, to use oil with the manufacturer's specifications. The 1.2 puretech engine is one of the best 3 cylinders on the market, despite the belt problem. A new, stronger timing belt is used on the new PureTech engines, which should ensure even higher mileage and greater safety for all.

    @mickeygoldmill3965@mickeygoldmill3965 Жыл бұрын
    • In principle, it is a good idea to replace the water pump as part of the assembly. Therefore, the water pump should be checked during the repair and replaced if there is noticeable wear. However, the pump does not necessarily have to be replaced.

  • Good video but I am missing some info. Question: How much roughly does it cost the replacement of all these parts shown in the box? And how often has to be replaced?

    @NikolaiSiurdyna79@NikolaiSiurdyna79 Жыл бұрын
    • Hello @NikolaiSiudyna79, This depends on the sales price of the parts and on the calculation of the labour costs of the respective workshop. For this, you should contact a workshop of your choice. This cannot be generalised, as the prices often differ considerably both regionally and geographically. The timing belt should be checked at every service. The check is carried out using a measuring tool as shown in the video. A change is planned for an interval of 60,000 km. Regards, Team VAICO

    • Hello keegan4039, The mileage is actually secondary, it was 127,000 km. The belt on the example vehicle has already been changed once. However, the oil pump was forgotten. It is more about the fact that the maintenance intervals were not adhered to, that possibly the wrong non-permitted engine oil was used, that the engine oil was contaminated by coolant, but also by fuels (E10) and by condensation water. This happens with vehicles that are used in short-distance operation and do not reach operating temperature. In addition, E10 fuels contain components that may damage the additives in the engine oil. Regards, Team VAICO

      @VAICO@VAICO9 ай бұрын
  • the service schedule for these engines is rubbish. Just change the oil and filter annually or 5,000 miles. Use the correct oil(Total Quartz ineo first 0w30) and don't use engine flush or additives because they attack the belt and problems can be avoided.

    @tenfootvoyager@tenfootvoyager10 ай бұрын
  • Wet timing belt? It won't work because it can't work like the old dry belt design. The problem is the flat teeth design so the oil between it can't escape fast enough from the flat surface and you will get a slammed timing belt from high pressure environments. This design is very very bad!

  • Worst engine ever, and Citroen dealers do anything to avoid doing the repair as it's major work. This engine is a shocking cover up. Despite mine being recalled they just had a quick look and a month later the belt had had it. I paid privately for a change at another Citroen garage only for it still to drink oil. I'll never buy Citroen or Peugeot again. Buyer beware.

    • I had this exact experience: belt replaced after 28.000km and guzzling oil like a maniac. Buyer beware indeed! The resale value plummets too because of this engine. Stellantis backs off and doesn't compensate, leaving thousands of duped customers out in the cold. This was covered extensively on a Dutch consumer oriented television program "Kassa". They even got a representative of Stellantis to respond, however there was nothing but excuses and weaseling their way out of it. The only Citroën I would consider buying is a 2cv as a hobby / tinker car. You can repair it yourself with some pliers and a piece of wire 😉 My daily driver is Japanese and it gives me ease of mind.

  • All this 'wrong oil used' is a boad of lollocks. So how does the 'blend' of the proper oil differ from the wrong oil. Steal ''tis don't make engine oil, they just get it from one of the blenders. What do the belenders allegedly do to the correct stuff that makes it a Belt Saver.

    • Agree, I have a new 308, which has the “correct” oil from the factory. The belt change interval was 120.000km. The car now has 30,000km, whilst checking the oil level, I noticed that the belt was not in good condition, it had started to crack, the belt was changed at 25,000km, it was covered by the warranty

      @arthurdardalis@arthurdardalis2 ай бұрын
  • What a stupid design. I have seen few drive belts damaged over the time due to an oil leaking on them. Cambelt will wear out over the time, even you use right oil during the service. All the rubber dirt will go to engine oil. On top of that Ford transit has engine service interval every 30k kms.
