In this video Jeff runs through basic disassembly of a Lineartronic CVT to the primary and secondary variator pulleys. Although the Lineartronic units have proven more reliable than many of the Jatco CVT's, we work on and overhaul quite a few of them.
Thanks,
Matt Johnson

There's probably no better sense of satisfaction in life than knowing your trade, and transmission repair has to be among the most challenging of all trades.
Jesus! I could never get Humpty Dumpty back together. Awesome work.
Boy, if I had not come across this video, I would have remained sold on what the Subaru dealership told us, that the CVT could not be repaired and replaced as a whole (for a LOT of money, of course, like $9 grand). Thank you so much! And since we live in St. Paul, we can definitely consider doing business with you. We were in despair earlier about the replacement cost of the CVT, and now, thanks to this video, we are becoming hopeful. Again, thanks Kennedy Transmission!
Whoever designed that casing is genius.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to film and upload it. You guys are a credit to the fine Grease-Monkey profession! Well done and many thanks from Australia!
Professionalism and confidence all rolled into one,,, hmmm, rare these days. Well done, Sir!
Heck I wish my son had a talent like this! A highly skilled man will always make great money with his hands! My brother in law has his own shop with 3 lifts and lives a great lifestyle and is even closed on the weekends most of the time by choice.
Cool video, glad to see a pro at work!
So nice to see this! Even the dealers don't mess with these, they send them back to the headquarters for QA. So, nobody local gets experience until late in the game, years later.
Biggest problem is getting parts to fix them. They're actually easier to work on a lot less parts than say a 6 speed auto
That was the best demonstration I've seen in dismantling a Transmission , very educational! Thank you, .
this guy is a damn transmission genius for doing what no Subaru certified mechanic would do.
right!? in my defense (Subaru dealer technician) Subaru of America only authorizes transmission unit replacement, unless its a minor repair such as a valve body, torque converter, harness/inhibitor switch, or other external sensor/component/seal. I guess they dont trust us to overhaul the unit!
@@TheGroundBeef they're avoiding the training expense, and not doing the living planet any favors (too much profiteering, not enough consideration for better lives)
All master techs had to take training on the CVT, we all had to disassemble and rebuild one. Subaru doesn't want us doing this because it's cheaper for them to have their own refurbishment center.
I was wondering who rebuilds these. So I was looking on you tube. Turns out you are right in my backyard.
This gentleman knows his trade! Like he can do this in his sleep! I would never be able to that with that much ease!
amazing work man, I truly have never seen a transmission like this ! absolutely amazing how these things are designed ! even a "Normal tranny " is akin to some type of crazy science experiment
Great video! Obvious that you have worked on many of these. I associate information sharing with a reputable business. I have a friend with a great transmission business near my home of Florence Alabama that won't touch any transmission from these Subaru's or the one I had in my VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI, not even just a fluid change. I've sent in a request form for my Outback and hope to get some good news on the cost of a rebuild.
Holy hell what an insane piece of work designing that case must have been.
Ah yes the nonchalant Conversation of been there done that so many times I’ve lost count. Well done presentation. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Waoo. You must really know what you are doing to be messing with this. Respect.
Not a lot of moving parts in here. I'd be more comfortable taking this apart than an automatic.
That one silver bolt. Thank you!
This guy is great at his job! Well explained!
Wow. Great video. They look relatively simple design. I own Subaru's with cvt trans and always wonder how they worked
Seeing someone this experienced and intelligent do their thing… is fucking awesome.
I fucking agree, man, the guy knows his shit, as we said at the plant. I'm in awe.
Work of art let alone engineering.
Great video! You're a mechanical genius.
seems pretty much straight forward, just the need for a few different types of pully's for removing bearings, the big one for the CTV belt itself and such. There is plenty of horror stories and people telling us mechanics that rebuilding them is impossible and not even worth attempting. They actually look pretty simple with far less moving parts than i thought.
What a great video. My CVT on 2010 Legacy started t slip, so would be nice to see the video of the actual service of this gearbox, what parts he replaced and so on.
Great video! I have a 2012 Outback with a CVT with an issue where once you come to a stop, as you first start to accelerate again it lurches and almost stalls out. Once you get past that it’s fine. What I have found is that if I put it into manual and just operate from the paddle shifters it works fine. Couple of odd things- this only happens once the engine / transmission have come up to temp. If you start driving on a cold day, this issue will start just about at the exact same time as warm air will start coming out the vents. I’ve heard of this issue of the torque converter staying engaged and my theory is that at some point once the system heats up enough the fluid starts being diverted to the CVT cooler and that triggers the torque converter to stay locked when I come to a stop. I’ve had a fluid “change” performed where you take the drain bolt off and then add more fluid into the side fill hole. They added about one more quart in than was removed. But it didn’t resolve it. I was quoted $7k from Subaru for a new CVT (I have 170k miles on it so no warranty). Since it still works in manual I’ve just been driving it that way. Curious if having the torque converter services might resolve this.
It's the torque converter or the valve body
Valve body
Valve body, costs about 300 bucks.
Thanks for taking the time. I just got a 2010 outback which is nice but makes a strange rattle up to 40 mph then stop, runs great still. Thanks again my friend.
Do a couple drain a fills might help
Hey I live pretty close to your shop! Great video
Wow... you have some serious skills.
Thanks you nice videos. shock to see subaru use some plastic part to guide their cvt belt.
You know your stuff. Great job!
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks!!
This guy sounds more like Russell Crowe than Russell Crowe does, I could listen to Jeff all day.
instablaster...
WoooooooW......... this is so intriguing
Alright, that looks a hell of a lot better put together than some of those Jatco abominations....
Jeff & Matt can't thank you enough for the video. My dad was a mechanic and the stainless steel table bring me good memories when I have first disassembled an AT. Now am driving a WRX CVT TR690 and just love it. At 48K miles i had my subi dealership replace my CVTF, and they used the Multi CVTF Motul, not the Subi High Torque One. When drove tested it, on lower revs was so smooth after replacing the strainer. But on high revs i felt that the belt has slipped. Shall I drain this Motul and try to find the High Torque Fluid ? Appreciate ur kind feedback. Joe
Damn! It's always great to see a craftsman at work. Thanks for sharing, it gave me a bit of relief concerning my '15 Subaru Forester's CVT. If it does go bad, I'll send it to you!
Thanks for the show and tell.
Great video! I was hoping you could tell me if I could remove that extension housing without removing the transmission to repair the gasket. I'm concerned something internally might shift in that orientation.
Looks complicated. Thanks for this teaching video.
Thanks for a great instructional video
Very good explanation. Thank´s.
Neat dissection, thanks
Good video! Very chunky chain
ShOcK & AWE amazement at the sophistication of the castings and components. You sure that isn't the latest RR Jet Engine ? Color me impressed 👍😎 Thank You
Wah baru tau yaah!!! Ternyata CVT Subaru Beda dengan CVT biasa yang menggunakan belt CVT Subaru menggunakan rantai yang sangat tebal, Harunya untuk mobil permorma tinggi menggunakan CVT jenis seperti ini semua.
Great video, Thanks ! Have you got any tips on identifying Variator chain noise ? Best I can describe it is somewhere between a bad wheel bearing and a differential, emanating from the main body of the transmission, sound about right ?
Awesome!!! greetings from 🇨🇱
I didn't know Subaru uses tension-driven belts for their CVTs. They look like the better alternatives than compression-driven ones like in the Nissan.
Amazing job. I totally see that the rebuilt CVT from you is better than the factory unit.
well done. great video.
Great video!! Besides the problems with both the lockup solenoid and the washer issue causing the converter to stay locked, what other common problems do you see with these 690 transmissions? They seem quite reliable.
Can you buy replacement components if needed? For example if the chain guide wears out can you buy just that piece?
I leased a 2018 Impresa "50th" from new, at 2500 miles I took the car in for its first oil change and added a noise complaint. The dealer told me they found the noise and the car needed a new transmission. At 7500 miles the car was making the noise again so I ended the lease early and bought a used '17 BMW i3 which has been a better car so far
So many parts in this design.
The secondary pulleys have a return spring. Is the spring tension dependent on the torque of the engine or just enough to push the pulley back to its original low ratio position?
planning on trading in my '16 forester right before 100k
Great video! One question How would you test for Glycol (Antifreeze) presence in CVT Fluid or ATF Fluid). In case of transmission cooler leakeage Appreciate your Assistance. Thank you
He knows the name of every piece hahahha.......only a true mechanic can fix a CVT.
Do the chain and "pulleys" get replaced when these are serviced? The chain still looked pretty good but the pin contact surface was distorted which is probably critical. I have one with the 580 with 70 k does its job.
nice job!
Hey Jeff, My question is how hard is it to find parts for these to rebuild. . . Thanks a bunch
I like how he's throwing the stuff around
What kind of stubby impact was that ? And also the tool you used to pry with. Great video 👌👍
What do you think about how the oil pump is driven, dependent on the TC and not directly? Wouldn’t it potentially cause inconsistent flow rate in some scenarios?
i have a noise coming from the transmission. Im told its the bearings that is going bad. what is the best bearings to replace it with
Same as a First Gen CR-V and many other modern shit boxes, can't change the ATF filter without splitting the cases. AWESOME. 🙄👎🏻😒💩 Planned obsolescence/self destruction at it's finest. Thanks for the video, very entertaining and helpful. 👌🏻😎👍🏻
That’s not true, you can change the CVT fluid from underneath.
@@Backs4more adjust your glasses and read again. I said the filter, I never said the fluid couldn't be changed. Changing the fluid it's a half assed solution anyway.
@@GIGABACHI fair enough, you are correct, I have adjusted my glasses.
@@Backs4more 👌🙂👍
The TR690 does not have a filter, does it?
Dear friend, I have spent a long time trying to find out where it goes or what is the input route in the transmission of the return line that comes from the exchanger. Does it go exclusively towards the drain pan, or does it lubricate or pressurize some intermediate part or mechanism on its way? Thanks for the technical video.
The Japanese made a good work. So easy to work with this transmission. And this guy is really good at it good job!
Thanks, Jeff is very efficient with the Lineartronic CVT's.
Great video. Is the TR690 swappable with a car running the TR580?
Jesus H C! you’re Superman! 👏🏻👏🏻
assuming the primary pulley, secondary, and belt have to be replaced, how much would it cost for the such ? would USD 3000 be enough? cheers from Indonesia
Damn your good at taking these apart ! Question is did u ever get it back together working correctly?lol Hellava job sir
Well, he'd be out of business by now if he coudn't... 😄
Your comment about the correct amount of oil being a must, makes me concerned, I do my own oil changes, but at 30,000 miles I had a dealer do the service, and my engine oil was almost a quart overfilled, filled it to the kink in the dipstick instead of the second hole. I brought it back to have it corrected, they put the same tech on it. They said it was all set, so I drove it home, checked the oil, and it was still at the same mark. Luckily I have an ezdrain in place of the oil plug, so I was able to correct it.
He is talking about CVT fluid, not engine oil. The two are not connected.
@@Backs4more If you can not trust them to do the engine oil correctly, can you trust them to do the cvt? That is my point.
So i am an aircraft and auto mechanic. but im just starting to dive into these cvts. so to give you a good overview, i have a CVT-TH58A, HEV (hybrid) Summetric, 3-element, single stage, 2-phase torque converter type setup, now i had a serious event. The torque converter went out, i discovered there was almost no gear oil in the front differential, yes thanks subaru, and when in drive, only the front wheels spin, the rear wheels jump spin very slightly from time to time, the front spin, but the driver's side wheel spins more rapidly than the passenger, there is a loud thumping and jumping when acceleratiing. it feels like half a clutch so to speak and compare to to get an idea of how it feels. So its a thump/clang with a jump forward accel, and in-between thumps there is no accel. this happens rapidly according to the RPM's produced. its not as bad at higher speeds, thats if i can get it to higher speeds. I already changed the torque converter which was also bad. Also to add, i had to clean the TCM as all the piston like valves were seized in place. I got that working. But trying to get an idea of what is damaged is mind boggling. Since im just starting to get my experience and yes this is a great complicated way to learn. so Let me know your thoughts. thank you
Hello! What often breaks down on the TR690? what exactly broke in this box? I’ve been driving the Outback BR for 12 years ... I want to change the fine filter on the box ... Respect from Russia! good job!
Jaguar, Bearing failures are the most common issue on the TR690. Servicing the transmission routinely is the best way to minimize wear. That being said, these CVT's do hold up pretty well. Thanks, Matt Johnson
I am looking at buying a 2021 Outback. What are your thoughts on purchasing an Vehicle Service Plan for extra CVT coverage?
I do not like CVT transmissions at all, I just don't think they belong in a car. As for a snowmobile yes, I don't see any other way of doing it. I don't see how these large cars they put out like the Outback like the biggest best model Subaru makes, if it's got a CVT I wouldn't even try to tow with it. I see that Subaru is going to reproduce the brat, I think that's so awesome I would love to have one but with a manual transmission. I know that's never going to happen so I will stick with my 2001 Forester with 5 speed manual because I can fix that with my eyes closed.😅 Thanks for the video it's nice to see experts do proper stuff on KZhead.👍
Exelent info Matt. Do you happen to know the differences between the TR690 JHBBA (wagon) and the JHBAA (sedan)? I have a very bad whine on a car I just got. Thought it was power steering at first. Guessing it's the trans pump, took of serep belt.
We do see slight variations within TR690's, but as to the applications you are referencing, I am not sure if there are any differences. We are always rebuilding the unit that came in the vehicle, so I am not sure about interchangeability. Thanks, Matt Johnson
@@kennedytransmissioncvtauto5430 did some more digging. I guess it is final drive ratio differences between wagon and sedan. My trans is making same noise as a bad power steering pump and not moving super well. Think it is the converter? Auction buy.
Would you advise sourcing a remanufactured TR690 or just let the shop rebuild? Dealer says the transmission is shot and wants to replace it for 8k... Car still moves when it's cold and I asked them to check out the tq converter but they didnt want to do it.
I have a 2022 hyundai elantra with the new IVT transmission do you recommend changing the oil in the transmission, they recommend not changing the fluid unless it needs to be repaired. That dosent sound rite to me.
You refer to having a bearing at the pump going bad and making noise. I have a 2013 legacy with a horrible squealing noise coming from transmission. The vehicle struggles to move. Feels like it is binding . Is this what you experienced? Thanks in advance.
Good day, tell me the thickness of the package of friction discs, transfer clutch, or the gap between them in the assembled package!
Hay guys so a year on and the car was going good starting making bit of noise than bang thought it was a broken CV because the broken shaft noise but it's inside my trans or front diff any ideas you can put in in drive or reverse and it goes ting ting ting and won't go forward or reverse any help would be wonderful.
JigSaw puzzle, respect.
Great video, thanks. Who makes the tool you used at 14.25 to pry out front pump? Any info would be appreciated. Cheers
I'm wondering as well. Could be used for a lot of things instead of a slide hammer
Snap-on seal puller I have one of those
@@cheesecurd100s Found it. SnapOn pn: S9094B cotter pin puller.
Hi sir, My subaru legacy BM9 saloon has a problem since i changed CVT fluid. Its a TR690 gear box. When i start the car and shift to drive, the car will start moving foward. But when i press the accelerator gently the car jerks between 0-20 kms.Above 20 kms the car runs fine.Plugs are fine, coils also fine. What can be the problem?
wow the subaru one is better than the nissan one. I always wondered
Subaru gets the engineering from Fuji Heavy Industries. They put these in construction equipment. Substantially more robust than Nissan-Renault Jatco crap.
This looks like a fine type of gentlemen that will drop kick you if you touch his coffee in the morning
You really know your stuff!! Is the TR 580 well built? does it also have the Chain (Belt)
better and chain
Are Subaru’s CVT more reliable than Nissan’s? I believe the older Subaru ones were JATCO (like Nissan), but the newer ones are made by Subaru? Thanks.
Nickolas, You are correct, we see far fewer issues with the Subaru CVT's than the Jatco units. Fortunately we have been able to source parts the past few years. Thanks, Matt Johnson
Kennedy Transmission, CVT & Auto thank you for info, keep up the good work!
Subaru especially over-built their first gen CVTs and had a program inspecting ANY issues. They've put a huge effort into these as their go-to tranny. I *love* the Subaru CVT. Driving is so much smoother, and even a 4-cyl can feel smoother in the mountains due to how the CVT can keep the motor in it's *sweet spot*. Just ignore the morons who will tell you to check/service the CVT fluid. JUST DON'T unless it's a required scheduled maintenance. and leave it to a dealer..
@@Mike80528 Agree. I think they do it every 30K miles
Had a Nissan Rogue and I sold it to get a Subaru after looking at both of those chains I think I made the right choice lot of Nissan owners saying their chains will snap and completely destroy the inside of CVT
Nissan uses jatco CVTs, they're literally the worst ones you can get. It's Russian roulette with them
Nissan is a belt made up of links. The links compress as they are pushed together. Subaru is chain, and the force vector is pulling along the chain axis. They are significantly different.
Is there any way to change the pump from the front of the bell housing?
got a 15 wrx that had bad motor replaced it took it for test drive lost all gears after 30 min drive never drained fluids in trans and i got a code for trans for secondary pump pressure p0841 what should i look at
I had a tech do head gaskets and we think the torque converter got jammed when re-installing the engine. Tech went for test drive, broke down, and now trans just revs and no fluid flowing in the lines. I have a core trans that just has a bad bearing noise only when moving. Think I can swap over the front pump drive chain and be good to go? Advice appreciated in advance.
Mine is doing the same thing with the rev, and no fluid pumping. What did you end up doing?
Is the edge of the chain at the same angle as the inside of the sheaves?
Was the primary pulley on this unit functional?
My subaru legacy BM9 saloon,2009 model jerks between 0 to 15km when accelerating gently. This problem started 5 days after changing CVT fluid.Above 20km the car runs perfectly. What can be the problem sir?
Is there a video of this same transmission being rebuilt?
