As you may or may not know this was one of Carson's classic lines ; he said this to countless numbers of rising young comedians as part compliment while it also has served to remind all in attendance - who was boss; the king. • The thing is - Carson knew when to let comedians do their thing. Carson's timing was as important if not more important than the comedian's. He knew exactly the right moment to step in, be the straight man, set up for a bit, and the really good comedians knew he was doing it and would take their cues from Johnny. It's amazing to watch now decades later. I never realized it at the time how crucial Johnny was to the comedian sitting in the chair beside him. It's a lost art. No talk show host today has these skills and the impeccable timing.

    @nordvegfigg7746@nordvegfigg7746 Жыл бұрын
    • Good point. This video really shows it. He sets them up very quickly and effortlessly, smooth and concise, then sits back with a smile and lets them shine. Then he senses the bit is over and quickly sets the stage for them again. And again. It's really something to watch - a master at the top of his game.

      @JoeDitzel@JoeDitzel Жыл бұрын
    • @@JoeDitzel And he doesn’t constantly interrupt his guests, intentionally embarrass or frighten them, or steal the limelight from them. Also, Johnny would have the occasional non-entertainer (average Joe) as a guest. I don’t watch Fallon, Corden, Meyers, Colbert, etc, because these guys think they are funnier than their guests, they talk over their guests, make their guests the butts of jokes and they are elitists. Give me Graham Norton any day; at least he’s entertaining.

      @marinashear3818@marinashear3818 Жыл бұрын
    • @@JoeDitzelwell said, Joe. The beauty of Carson is that he really enjoys young comics and is really happy for their success. A lot of other hosts seem to have a vague resentment, like "hey, you're stealing my laughs! " Carson really understood the mechanics of comedy, the timing and always tried to help. Nowadays, the host would jump in with, "what was it like working with Madonna?" or some such buzzkill. Sigh.

    @chrismazeffa696@chrismazeffa6962 жыл бұрын
    • There is every reason to approach the host position that way. It's better for the guests and for the audience and for the ratings. Carson had the monologs and skits and the opportunities to display his wit during the interviews. He had a free pass to make fun of Ed and of Doc and of Freddy. That's enough and there's no need to compete with the guests. But some of today's hosts appear to be unable to take the support role with a guest who is ready, willing and able to entertain us.

    • @@dalehall2067 I'm sorry, but this is such a BS comment. You see it all the time. SNL was GREAT when I was watching the show, but the "current" cast (pick a year, any year, because this has been said for decades!) is horrible and not funny at all! Well, I hate to break it to you, but SNL has always been hit-or-miss, even with the BEST cast they've ever had. You only remember the great sketches, but your brain forgot about the other dozens of bombs that even you didn't laugh at back when your favorite cast was on the air. I'm as guilty as anyone else when I think "oh man, SNL used to be so much better/funnier when so-and-so was in the cast!" but then if you actually watch the show, even the current cast has about the same funny/not funny ratio as all of the others. Everyone has their favorite cast of SNL, but that doesn't mean the other seasons aren't funny at all. I bet you'd be surprised if you actually tried to watch the show that you'd laugh at some of the sketches, even though you'd never admit to it.

  • I absolutely loved The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. I had the privilege of seeing his show LIVE one time, in 1987. Coincidentally, his guests that day were Dana Carvey, Melissa Manchester, and some gentleman that was 101 years old. He was in great health. He said he hoped to live until the year 2000, so he can say he was alive for three different centuries. Not many people can claim that. Johnny was THE greatest late night talk show host of all time.

  • I was from the same home town as Chris Reeves. His family had a giant mansion that they donated to the town. We built a new high school on the property, rented out the giant stone mansion for TV and movies, built a park with pools, tennis courts, outdoor ice rink and more. Wonderful family. What an unjust tragedy for the man

  • It's eerie to see Christopher Reeves on the side so healthy. JFK Jr's death and Chris's accident are two tragedies that utterly grieved me for such a long time. Colossal waste. Two of the world's brightest star cut down in their prime.

    • I'm friends with Christopher Reeve's best friend. He would tell me about the things Dana (his late wife) would have to do on a daily basis to take care of Chris. It was unbelievably tragic. She was a great woman. Anyway, the last production Mr Reeve ever did was for his best friend and me. He died shortly after.

    • We had Mr. Reeve on a racing sailboat I worked on after the accident. One of his few outings after that tragic event. His wife, kids and nurse were all on the dock as we carefully loaded him and his extremely heavy wheelchair into the boat. It blew a gale that day, nasty weather, but he smiled all the way through it. I was so impressed with him and his family too. They just seemed like really wonderful people with a lot of fortitude and grace. I was so shocked when his wife Dana passed at such an early age. Nothing is fair in this world.

    • @@ProducersInk He was lucky to have Dana to support him so loyally. More than half of their time together took place after his accident. It's great to see their son William is happy and successful despite losing both his parents as a child. They must have raised him very well. I was obsessed with the Superman films as a kid in the 1980s and could recite most of the script by heart after watching them repeatedly. He would've turned 70 this year. If he had lived, I know he would've appeared on screen as Superman again, given how all the old superhero actors are being brought back now. I think there are rumors he may be digitally recreated for a brief appearance in an upcoming film, like how they recreated Harold Ramis for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. If it can be done respectfully like that with his family's approval, then it could be a nice tribute.
