Let's learn some advanced phrases for highly proficient speakers of English. These phrases and idioms are even a little more challenging than vocabulary at a C2 level.
I'll teach you the meaning, tell you how the nouns are used, as well as go over the pronunciation of each noun so you can say them just like a native speaker.
If you would like to review, here are the phrases from the lesson.
1. drag your feet
2. go to bat for (someone)
3. run-of-the-mill
4. to err on the side of caution
5. pull (some/a few) strings
6. chime in
7. cut (someone) some slack
8. one-up (someone)
9. at my wits' end
10. second-guess
11. heads up
12. foot the bill

  • Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed the lesson and learned something new. 🤗 ***CORRECTION: I just want to note that there was a typo about halfway through the lesson. The phrase is to 'ONE-UP (SOMEONE).' 👍

  • Hello, Wes. Thank you for the lesson. You explanation was totally comprehensive. I feel my English level’s getting up thanks to you) And I don’t wanna be at my wits’ end with these expressions. So, in further these expressions require some time in brushing up on them. And yep, this wasn’t a run-of-the-mill lesson, and you know, your advanced ones go to bat for me in learning English, indeed. Waiting for the next advanced lessons)

  • After I watched this video, I second-guessed myself, and did a double take. All this time I've been dragging my feet on my English lessons and cut myself too much slack, and as a result my English is still run-of-the-mill. I'm kind of at my wit's end, until you chimed in and gave me a heads up on how I should one-up myself. My father pulled some strings and foot the bill for my English education, so I should not disappoint him. And I will go to bat for my son too in his language studies. ... I hope I got them right😅

    @vivek.p.radhakrishnan@vivek.p.radhakrishnan2 ай бұрын
    • No, it doesn't really change the meaning. But it's always good to be more concise and eliminate unnecessary words. I'd go with the first sentence. 😊

  • What does "foot (someone) the bill" mean? Does it mean to make someone else pay for something?

    @milonanni8806@milonanni88062 ай бұрын
    • In this case, it means someone is going to make someone else pay for something. (e.g. The city is going to foot you with the bill. -- the city will make you pay for something). 👍

  • The pronunciation of both words 'err' and 'air' are utterly the same. It would be plausible for GT to err in hearing 'err' as 'air'. So in the caption/transcription system of this video, the word 'air' should be (replaced)interpreted 'err'.
