Daniel Ricciardo's anger at Lance Stroll following their collision at the Chinese Grand Prix was a major talking point after F1 returned to Shanghai for the fifth round of F1 2024.
Ben Anderson and Scott Mitchell-Malm unpick the consequences of that incident, Ricciardo's reaction, the response of Stroll and Aston Martin - and analyse the key lessons from a race where McLaren over-performed, Ferrari underwhelmed and Mercedes looked lost (again).

Well that seems to be happening regularly this season and now we hear about points down to 12th place being discussed. You can pretend this is about communicating to fans or improving the product for racing down the order, but there’s a guy who is lucky to be 10th in the driver championship (because of headline DNFs in Australia) who’ll be all in for that idea.

  • It has been clear for years now that Stroll isnt 'aggressive', he just has NO feeling in the car. He doesn't notice his tyres being flat, he's surprised by less grip when its racing, or his brakes.being cold. He just drives like it's a computer game. Thats how he learned to drive or something. So many times he's proven that he has no clue whats happening around him in a race (and what a contrast to his teammate). THIS is what makes me say he doesnt deserve a seat in f1. Its not his daddy, or the money. Heck he had good results in the junior classes right ? But his complete lack of feeling and understanding of the car he's in, makes him the opposite of a good racing driver. Let alone one on the elite 20.

    • How do you explain podium and regularly high grid spot in rain though if he got no feel? I think he's kinda zoning out or thinking too much about stuff other than what's happening in front rather than having no feel. Also he lacks good prep laps for quali. Very inconsistent. It would explain better the difference in perf with his f2 results and also the rain stuff because in rain you only race. No tire management, no deltas, no switching stuff on the wheel every corner. Plus he's got the Alonso pressure. We all saw how it destroyed so many of his teammates careers. They start overdriving to get closer to Alo and end up worse in the process. (see Perez for another example) I'm sure Aston was aware of that when they signed him so props to them and Lance to have accepted to sign him despite this. It must be crushing for Lance. He does have some feel moments that are questionable, but I don't think the one with Danny was that nor I think he's the worst on the grid on that aspect. What happened at the Chinese Gp was caused by Sainz barging into the corner as if the race started because he was too far and then slamming the brakes, which made alo lock up as he cannot see in front of sainz and thought the race restarted. So to me it would be a racing incident but because the replay you see stroll was looking at the leaders to see if they had restarted instead of straight ahead, plus the damage caused, I can understand the penalty. It was quite unfortunate and it has happened in the past many times even to some of the greatests... And including just 4 years ago at the 2020 Tuscan Gp where many drivers including Danny Ric got a warning. as the stewards mentionned that there was "extreme concertina effect that dramatically increased as it moved down the field". No one was penalised despite the huge pile-up as it was deemed that those immediately behind bottas "complied with the regulations". Full disclosure I saw stroll often at the Tremblant track practicing when he was racing karts and he was a super nice dude (while imo most kids at tracks are picks lol). So like with any drivers saying shit during a race, I don't judge their personality when they are on the track pumped full of adrenaline. Post race interviews he blames the effect and calls it a race incident, like the stewards did at the 2020 gp... hope they will have a talk together and burry the hatchet. Ric isn't doing himself much good by giving him all the blame post race, he knows better.

    • @@putneg97 "the difference in perf with his f2 results " There is no difference in performance with his F2 results, because he has no F2 results. He want straight from F3 to Williams thanks to the funding his dad brought. And his championship in his last year of F3 was controversial as numerous drivers thought the other drivers in his team sandbagged or took team orders to let him win on occasion. "Stroll was looking at the leaders to see if they had restarted instead of straight ahead" He wasn't "looking at the leaders" because he wasn't close enough to see them. He was looking into the apex while ignoring the four cars directly in front of him, despite all drivers knowing that concertina effects happen on rolling restarts. "Ric isn't doing himself much good by giving him all the blame post race, he knows better." Ric's take was entirely accurate and the blame falls squarely on Stroll's shoulders. He had the largest gap and yet reacted the slowest. Nobody else made contact until Stroll barrelled into Ricciardo and pushed him into Piastri.

  • What happens if you rear end another car on the road...............in my country it's always the driver in the rear at fault, as they have the best chance of anticipating the need for avoiding a crash.

  • Stroll is the poster child for the reason why nepotism is a bug rather than a feature.

  • In my opinion this is the same as Alonso and Russel in Australia, the driver behind wasn't paying attention and was expecting the corner to go as normal

    • Completely different scenarios, not at all comparable unless you're being willfully obtuse. The key and most blatantly obvious difference was that nobody in China was deliberately braking noticeably early for the sole purpose of disrupting the following driver, the second being that all drivers know that concertina effect happens at restarts and they need to be on their toes. Stroll was not on his toes, and moreover he wasn't even looking at the FOUR cars in front of him.

  • We gave our all and that’s all we can do. Our rivals are strong but our team spirit and determination is stronger 🙌 Decent points haul but we really need to improve the pace in the upcoming races. We struggled way too much on this track. Hopefully next race will be much better. Keep pushing guys! Always supporting you 100%. Forza Ferrari! 💪🇮🇹🐎

  • How was Norris’s P2 finish on merit, there were two safety cars during the race 💀

    • True, safety car helped a lot. Tho he managed to keep up with Checo's pace for a little bit (10 or so laps) which helped him keep 2nd.

    • How is that not merit? The connection is not immediately clear why 2 SC 's remove merit. Its not like he was P10 and the 8 cars in front of him crashed out.

  • Let's not forget what Seb once told the press. These guys are racing drivers. They're in high stress and are hyper competitive. Not everything these guys say during a race is nice. They don't mean the insults they say. They just get emotional. Stroll is one hundred percent at fault, but the real problem is his reaction once he was out of the car. We can be critical, but let's not make a big deal of what he said in the car cause it's not really fair to do so.
