Why Are There No Mosquitoes at Disney World?
Walt Disney World is smack dab in the middle of a swamp in a state that is, more or less, a big swamp itself. So with that in mind, why isn’t Walt Disney World swarming with mosquitoes?

How? Well they don’t have any particularly special weapon that isn’t used elsewhere in the world. Disney’s arsenal includes insecticides which kill mosquitoes fairly quickly, growth regulators which reduce their lifespan, and maintaining natural predators in the area that eat the bugs as part of their diet. On their own, they’re all methods that many other places employ to deal with the annoying bugs. However the impressive part is the vigilance and precision in which Disney carries out these methods.
It all begins with the Mosquito Surveillance Program which is an element of the Department of Planning and Engineering for the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The Improvement District itself is the governing jurisdiction that covers Walt Disney World and is controlled by Disney.
You see rather than blindly spraying insecticides over the entirety of the property, which is twice the size of Manhattan, Disney instead uses various methods to carefully track where and when to spray. The program maintains over 60 traps across the area of Walt Disney World.
They’ll then bring those traps, filled with mosquitoes, back to a lab where the mosquitoes are frozen to death and analyzed. The team looks at everything from what kind of species they are, to their concentration, to how old they are and how many of them were ready to lay eggs. By looking at all this data for all of these traps, Disney is able to paint themselves a picture of what parts of the property need the most attention when it comes to eliminating the bugs.
Similar to the way they lay mosquito traps all over property, they also spread something else across their property: chickens. They’re called sentinel chickens, and their sole purpose is to be monitored for signs of dangerous viruses like the West Nile virus. Unlike us, chickens don’t get sick from the West Nile virus. Disney tests the blood of these chickens regularly to see if that antibody is present. If it is, it means a mosquito with the virus was nearby.
So using these tools, Disney is able to adjust their spraying patterns and other mosquito killing methods to keep up with unexpected concentrations of the bug. Now that’s the precision of their methods, but there’s also the vigilance. Disney, more than most, sprays their property twice a day to cull the mosquito numbers, once right around sunrise and once around sunset, the two times of the day mosquitoes are most active. Their fleet of trucks cover as many as a combined 86 miles worth of roads, fields, canals, and firebreaks across their property.
However, what happens when their best isn’t good enough? Well if there’s one thing Disney holds above guest experience, it’s guest safety. So in the few instances where they felt they could do more to ensure that guest safety, it came at the cost of experience. Most notably, there were instances of an encephalitis scare both in 1990 and 1997 that resulted in Disney taking extra precautions. They handed out letters to guests staying on property that cautioned them to minimize activities during sunrise and sunset, and to wear longer sleeves whenever possible. On top of that, both golf courses on property as well as water based attractions were closed early so that guests weren’t using either during sunset. The outdoor luau at the Polynesian resort was temporarily moved indoors, and the hay bale rides and campfire activities at Fort Wilderness were completely cancelled. Recently we saw Disney take extra steps during the Zika virus scare in 2016. Guests at resorts were offered free mosquito repellent, and stations with the repellent were setup throughout the theme parks on property.

I remember mosquitoes at Disney World when I was a kid. I'm 34 now and they've definitely improved on them because we used to stay at Fort Wilderness and that, to my knowledge, was the only time I recall a mosq. I do recall a point where my parents would have us stay inside later and the resort warned us that they were spraying... was definitely later 90s, if my recollection is correct.

Great video! Perfect level of detail and pacing.
I grew up as a kid on Army posts in the US and every day in the summer months the mosquito-fogging trucks would drive through the housing areas spraying. It’s very interesting to see how the Disney people are maintaining control over their Florida properties. And the CHICKEN SENTINELS!!! Wow!
I'm always surprised that there are almost no butterflies at Disney World, despite there being flowers everywhere. During the Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot there are millions of native flowers that blanket the park, yet there are no butterflies (or bumblebees or other insects you would normally see). I have just a few of those native plants in my yard here in Florida and they are covered in butterflies every day. I think that their twice-daily spraying for mosquitoes is not only killing mosquitoes.
Arthur de Wolf That's a good point actually. I've seen a few butterflies in Epcot, but certainly not as many as I see in our backyard. I didn't even think about that.
Arthur de Wolf Well yeah, they're insects and they spray with an insecticide. Granted a lot of caterpillars are dangerous to touch and all destroy plants, so it's probably also a good idea they're kept at bay. Not for the environment of course, but for Disney and the kids who might touch one, it is.
just went to Epcot during the Flower and Garden Festival. I saw several butterflies and some bees. but you're right it is less than you'd expect. they did have a big tent that was a butterfly exhibit, so maybe some of the butterflies escaped from there.
Seems like it, the insecticides used aren't specialized enough to be classified as "mosquiticide".
Storm Bolt *its a good idea to mass kill bees and butterflies* lol
I'd never even stopped to think of how few mosquitoes I saw in Disney World before this video. Terrific insight!
jujucatjuca same, now I think about it.. it’s amazing
When a job is well done nobody notices it.
Lol!!! Omg i laughed so hard at the sentinel chickens!!! That was fantastic.
We stayed at a Disney resort when it opened. For the first time, after many summer resort visits, we saw tons of bugs in the new resort. Returning to the hotel room one night, we saw an entire wall covered with all types of bugs. Some roaches were as big as frogs! I’m sure that Disney eliminated the insect problem after that. I never realized how much work they had to do with pest control. We never saw bugs again on subsequent visits to Disney resorts.
They also use water movement to stop mosquitoes from laying eggs. Water fountains that continuously ripple through the water.
And ridding of standing water, like at River County.
Edit it so you don't have to reply to your comment
Nah, mosquitoes are just difficult to draw and animate.

Yet still this isn't the hardest part. Having believable costumes is the worst.
What about 3D animation, I mean that is what they do now.
It never ceases to amaze me the depth Disney goes to to assure the Disney Experience for their guests. I have never seen a mosquito at WDW. Now, what to do about those Love Bugs? Hahahaaa
I've been to DW a bunch of times because I live in FL. I never knew that about them since I get bitten a lot by the mosquitoes else where. I think you did a great job with this video and adding the cartoons with it makes it fun to watch.
I guess I forgot the part in Snow White where the seven dwarfs go on a overly detailed mosquito killing spree.

I worked at Animal Kingdom for a year. They have a pest control crew that sprays around the parks. I seen a guy spraying in the back area where I worked. I was during the time of day the parks wasn't open. I don't know what substances they used in the spray. I had seen a small alligator one time, and I called the control group, and they came and captured it.

I moved from the Northeast to Florida when I was 40. In all the time I've been here I've never been bothered by mosquitoes. In fact, as I recall, summertime in Massachusetts I was more bothered by them than I ever have been here. Maybe in the swampy places there are more mosquitoes but in residential areas it is just not a problem.
Good video... also I've noticed that none of the waters ways in/near the parks and hotel areas are stagnant, these waters are constantly flowing which also keeps the population lower.
Youra Ninee i think I saw a wave machine on one of the islands on the lake not sure though
Mosquitos don't use lakes to breed, but small stagnant pools of water. Things like hollow trees, a discarded tin can, a depression lined with fallen leaves, etc. Unless the lakes are devoid of life, ofcourse, because fish would eat the larvae otherwise.

As a commercial pesticide applicator that has done work for Disney, I can say firsthand that Disney currently uses the in2care system for mosquito control. It's commercially available in the best product on the market. Disney uses chickens to diagnose areas with heavier mosquito populations around the park. They draw the blood from the chickens and can tell what the mosquito density is. Those are the areas they target.

This is an awesome video.. Thank you for taking the time to research and put info like this out to the public.. I know some people don't/wont see the value in this, but i live in Florida, about 25 minutes from Disney World, and mosquitoes are really bad this time of year, and i'v kinda wondered how Disney kept their numbers down to a minimum.. I use a Thermacell, when i'm out in the woods, and 2 Thermacell Halo's for my back yard.. Peace!
I live a thousand miles away from Disney World, and I never realized just how much interest I had wondering about how Disney handles mosquitoes until seeing this video.
It does get you wondering.. lol..
Calvin H. Do the halos work well? I'm surrounded by water and marshes, and hate spraying every 1-3 months
They work okay if you're just wanting to sit like at a table or some small area like that. And if there's any kind of breeze you need to make sure the halo is up wind from you so the breeze blows it to you.. I was told about a system called "Mosquito Magnet", that runs off propane, some sort of cartridge for bait i guess, and has to be plugged in also, and takes a propane tank like you use for a Bar-BQ grill, and i believe i'll be getting one of those soon.. They take care of one acre, and they take care of mosquitoes, midges, black flies and no-see-ums.. You have to replace the cartridges every so many days, but I'v been told they work great, and they cost between $299 to $750, depending on which one you get..
Thanks for the info on the Thermacell products; I wasn't familiar with them. I've had great results from the OFF! Clip-Ons, though keeping them fed with refill cartridges and batteries would be expensive if you were using them on a regular basis.
unfortunately the insecticides and growth regulators affect the natural predators as well - especially the amphibians.

At least one of those cartoons is from the early days when Disney was contracted to make short films for the U.S. military. Mosquito control was a big thing for overseas troops back in the day--you can't have an effective fighting force when they're all sick with malaria or dengue or what have you! So the military figured that their soldiers might learn better from a fun cartoon than they would if their superiors just told them to be vigilant, use their bug spray, and empty out standing water. Here's a link to the full cartoon (though it's inexplicably in black and white): kzhead.info/sun/ntGiY7dven-tY4k/bejne.html

Florida bugs had me move to Arizona! Good move
Interesting, well done little video! Now people expect this level of pest control at every Airbnb and leave negative reviews without it.
