  • I actually got married to my wife because of Firefly in a major way. Entered college, had no car at the time and needed a ride to school. During orientation, the mother of my wife turned around and talked to me. We were of the same nationality , so she was excited to talk to me. She introduced me to my wife, and gave me her number so I can "take care" of her. Anyway, my wife at the time was a VERY timid person - never spoke to another boy , and was very anti-social. On the first day of school, I called her early - and went to I-hop, where she didn't even take a bite of her omelet (as it was her first dining experience with a guy lol). On the way back, I was a bit discouraged by how difficult this ride situation was going to be... super awkward, understandably. As we got near her car, on the back window was a large sticker that read "Serenity", in that firefly font. I was so excited, because I had just finished that series a week ago, and was a massive fan. We were able to talk about something we both loved and while it was still difficult for her to open up, it gave us something to talk about , and eventually ended up dating her, then marrying her- we've been together 10 years, married for 6, and we still watch firefly together.

  • One of the biggest problems with the Firefly series is how so few people actually knew of its existence. By this I mean people who would have become great fans never knew of its existence until long after it was canceled. My stepfather was 1 of these people. He had no clue that this show existed until I showed it to him on Netflix. When I did he was upset that it was canceled before he had ever known it even existed. Also I don't think the magic of the Firefly series can be recaptured. The culture has changed far too much. We will have to wait until another paradigm shift in the culture for it to happen again.

    • TV networks seem to have a very poor history with the Sci-Fi genre, as the executives running them are so conservative & worry that the shows will scare the viewers, so their reaction was to broadcast them sometime around midnight in the middle of the week, often prioritising sporting events to precede them! Invariably that meant you had to stay up late to watch it, or at the very least start the recording on your VHS machine to ensure you don't miss an episode!

    • @eswielinga3064 My stepfather was actually in disbelief. He didn't find out about it until 2012. That's with the original channel it aired on being one that he tends to watch. So he was watching the channel it aired on while it was airing. Yet it was coming on at about 12 or 1AM. It's very much as if the channel itself was conspiring to keep possible fans from finding the show. At least in his case, they succeeded spectacularly. I only found out about it because I was working the late shift and usually took 3 to 4 hours to wind down before I could go to sleep. So I was coming home every day and surfing the channels winding down, and it popped up. It was 1 AM.

    • @@stevie-ray2020Too conservative? I don't know about that, showed Firefly to my fundie Christian brother and he adored it! Reality is we're far too woke now to have a love story between a woman and a man who constantly calls her bad words. Firefly was 100% about amazing characters; the setting and plot were secondary. But the current crop of Hollywood writers are far too obsessed with sexual identification, race, demonizing cis, white males, and policing their own speech to write one truly complex, interesting character, let alone 7. You can't even use the word "woman" these days without deeply offending most Hollywood writers. These people are far more concerned with identity than making art! We are truly living in the age of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence," sadly.

When all of the flight medics sat down one day we realized that he built his team around the crew of the Serenity. It blew his mind when we put it to him but now he can't unsee it. We would sit down and watch the series and film together. We even got "You can't take the Sky from me" patches made for our flight helmets. Got more made when the pilots and crew chiefs wanted them and handed a few out to Aussie Browncoats that ran the Role 2/ Forward Surgical team. Good idea, screwed over by powers that didnt understand it, and the "defeated" never really letting the fight go. And eventually getting a few good punches themselves. And even if they didnt win overall, theyre still out there fighting (and watching/reading). • Considering that Disney lately seems to be where once great IP’s now go to die, it’s very troubling that they now own Firefly. If they have it their way, the entire crew becomes part of the ever growing alphabet monster while the entire Firefly universe becomes queer. Marvel and Star Wars will never be the same...irrevocably damaged by the identity politics and people who don’t even like it. WHY? Would rather they just left it alone than have it get butchered and permanently marred by some purple haired Twatter freak. If they can successfully stay to the canon, then I’m all for it. But I highly doubt Disney has the ability...or the desire. Not like any of these other big companies wouldn’t do the same; look at Paramount with Halo, and Amazon with Lord of the Rings (and Wheel of Time). They haven’t even been fully released yet but one has to only look at what HAS been released. Pure SHIT...

  • As a person who grew up in the 60sand 70s, the original Star Trek was an obsession to me as it was to millions... It was only a few years ago that I purchased the Firefly series on KZhead. It INSTANTLY became my most beloved science fiction series..... Firefly. in my opinion, absolutely and utterly dwarfs Star Trek or any other science fiction series ever made.... ... It is truly a bitter shame that Firefly and Serenity didn't become the greatest and most successful science fiction series of all time. As a browncoat, my way of reliving the joy of that single glorious season of Firefly is getting to watch reactors on KZhead experiencing "The Verse", crew and joy of the series for their first time. It's 2023 now and I've yet to see a single person not fall hopelessly in love with the series..... It truly was a masterpiece that should've go on for years.... • For me I discovered Firefly completely by accident!! In 2010, I was online talking to somebody in a email chat about movies I had met through a post I'd made on Craig's List (of all places) Rants and Raves section a week earlier. I had been talking about how Hollywood sucked and how there was "no good science fiction shows out", and added that I had just seen Enterprise for the first time!! The person I was talking too, asked me "Have you been living under a rock?" (jokingly) and I said "No I was going through a bitter divorce from my second wife in 2001 to 2004 and I had been homeless since 2002 till a friend had allowed me to move in with them, but hadn't had cable in about three years!" And that is when the online friend I was talking to said "Then you don't know about Firefly, huh?" And my reply was "Firefly, what is that about?" and the only answer I got was "Dude you HAVE TO SEE THIS SHOW!"!!! I dug around on the internet for it, and nobody had it!! What information I read about it (by 2010) was so out of date and spotty at best! Then I stumbled across a copy of the DVDs and sat and watched it (in the correct timeline order) and was immediately hooked on it!! I watched it over and over and over again!! And just went I couldn't watch it again, I would throw a couple episodes on and watch it again, in order, out of order, and in between watching episodes of Castle (oddly enough)!! I fell in love with the show.....then six months had gone by and I dug around the internet looking for MORE Firefly and that is when I learned that it had been canceled!! BUT I stumbled upon a website that talked about a 2005 movie Serenity and stated that it was "the continuing story of Firefly"!! I got my hands of a copy of that and watched the movie about 30 times!! Firefly transformed me, inspired me, changed me!! Alas I came to realize Firefly was sort of about my life!! Constantly fighting just to get by and keep flying!! And no matter how hard I tried things never went as they should go or I planned....exactly how Firefly works!!

  • I was introduced to this universe in 2006. I just graduated navy bootcamp and was in my barracks for A-school. It was the weekend and I had nothing to watch at night. I went down the hall to my friend Perkins and told him I need something to watch and make it good. He tried to sell me on this show Firefly and tried to give me the history blah blah blah. I told him I wasn't interested in a show. So then he started telling me about Serenity the movie of the show firefly and I only half listened to him. I went down the hall to my room, climbed in my rack, and put it in my portable DVD player. I was enthralled by the movie from start to finish. Even going in cold, knowing none of the characters, the histories, relationships, or anything about the show I felt I followed along just fine. I did feel I missed out on some back story and show specifics. But the movie had a fast enough pace that I kept up with it enough to love the movie. I watched it again as soon as I finished it. The next day, I went and returned the movie and wanted to ask him about the show he said it was from. He had the dvds and I watched it right away. Holy shit I was amazed by this show. I couldn't believe this was everything I ever wanted in a show without knowing it. Even the episodes that could be considered "filler" are just more time that you get to spend with the crew and on the ship or on a job. It really makes you feel a part of the crew as you watch it... I have been a Brown Coat ever since. I have introduced so many people to this universe since. They have gone on to be both either casual viewers that felt it was a good watch or a massive brown coat themselves. For about the first 5-6 years or so since being introduced to this I have watched it at lease twice a year. After the I watched it once. But in the subsequent years lately, I haven't. I have read the books put out recently which i highly recommend. But after watching this vid and a few others before it that popped on my recommendations randomly, I think I'm gonna do a much needed rewatch.

That thing started off as hard as any pulse drive, but once on board, it never let us down. Off course we were a tad bit confused at first, but it only insured that we'd buy the series soon afterwards. No we didn't needed to have seen the show to be touched and amazed. Yeah the movie become only better afterwards. And yeah, having the movie and the series sharing the same name would have helped... If I hadn't heard about the show years prior form a fan making a lasting impression, I would never have made the link between both products on my own; left there to want more, not knowing there was already some.

It was a magical cast - and that group of people will ALWAYS be that special crew, no matter what they might do since then. • @Michael Bravo , they are afraid of a backlash ofalling on non-woke movies. As in if it is not woke it will not sell at all. That's why all woke characters feel so unnatural. They were added just so they can be there, so there is no backlash. The second reason - making money without working. They use familiar famous stories, make heroes into girls or turn them black and hope people would pay for tickets/subscriptions for something that is both new and nostalgic. No need to find a new storie, use the fame of another storie. And they do. So first priority is still money. They just agree to less money to get any profit at all. That is why all the characters get treated this way.

The heroic determination that is demonstrated by those who just refuse to bow the knee and somehow manage to be individuals and make their own way against all odds is mirrored so well. It will take people like Mal and his crew standing up to them to continue the concept of freedom and truth. It will take people who value standing on their own two feet and not being dependent on the "system." And like in Firefly, packing your own personal defense on your hip is likely going to become a key part of our future. But I suspect like in Firely, it will also soon be required to live on the edge of society, likely being mobile via RV or camper, somewhat similar to Mal and the crew do.
