  • Best grand tour stage of the year. Best LR recap of the year. “Choo choo Bahrain train!” “Arghhhhh! I ain’t marking that man, he’s a wild thang!” And the bike fit advice at the end. 😂😂😂

  • Did Champoussin even know he won when he crossed the finish line? I mean, it seems so weird that none of the big guns even tried to follow him, so if I were him I would be really confused. And how could he keep track of all the riders attacking and dropping back? Bizkarra, Gibbons, Haig, they all played jojo, it must have been a nightmare to keep track of the situation from within the race. Anyway, great win for him, spending all day in the break but still hanging on when he gets caught and then choosing the perfect moment to exploit the weird tactics among the GC riders. I love it.

    @wiesorix@wiesorix2 жыл бұрын
    • I think the logic behind that is if Roglic immediatley closed him he would have given Yates and the others an opportunity to possible stay on his wheel and counterattack. I think Roglic did it exactly right waiting and seeing if they have the energy left to attack. The other arguement is that he was critized for stealing the glory of an unkown rider so he let him win and still won over the other GC competitors. It means so much more for an unkown pro to win a Grand tour Stage than just another win for Bernal, Yates Roglic...

      @peterers3@peterers32 жыл бұрын

I was watching live, keeping track of where everyone is and who's attacking when, and somehow even i missed one of bizkarra's attacks (after champoussin attacks, suddenly bizkarra is ahead of the top4. you can see him in the background at the mas attack clip) It was such an amazingly chaotic stage!

I realize professional cycling is extremely hard and mentally very taxing. I'm sure his motivation was completely lost after the split with JHaig and knowing he was off the podium...but come on man. If you have no injury, finish the dang race and just feel blessed you are in the top 10 in the Vuelta. At the very least do it for your teammates you can look them in the eye over dinner instead of apologizing you quit.

    @rwupperman@rwupperman2 жыл бұрын
    • I mean they literally did hold him back - Padun was railing it off the front of the break but got yelled at over team radio to wait up and help Haig+Mäder. This isn’t checkers, this is chess. It’s not a matter of “6W/kg smash lol” on every climb, there is a ton of finesse and strategy that goes into grand tour racing, and being able to pull like a truck is only part of the picture. There was great insight from Haig himself during the rest-day recap pod that LR gifted us with, that he thinks Padun is really really strong, but it will take time for him to learn the game. That’s why guys like Pogacar are so dangerous, it’s crazy to have legs like that but also the head for tactics at a young age.

  • Reminds me off the penultimate stage of the Vuelta 2015, when Team Astana launched an team-attack on Tom Dimoulin and Fabio Aru got almost carried to his first and still only Grand Tour Victory. If you miss one attack and get dropped at the wrong moment, hilly terrains including longer flat parts in between the hills can cause more damage to a GC Rider than some high mountain stages.

    @tommythomasson1@tommythomasson12 жыл бұрын
    • Indeed!...To me it was very sad seeing my favorite racer Tom D. Loosing the Vuelta that day. Tom was the race leader but was in a very weak team. Astana sent satellite riders from the start and attacked Tom with Aru and Nibali. With still many km to go Astana had isolated Tom. Astana had couple of riders to drop from the break away and 4 of them put the hammer on the flying Dutch...it was a sad moment seeing Dumolin pulling alone, no one giving him a relay...The 4 Astanas arrived together to the finish line, and crossed the line smiling and embracing each other while pedaling. Their ambush succeeded and their assault to the Red Jersey was complete. Tom dropped to 6th overall...

    • @@GDF07 That was essentially their squad this vuelta... Landa was terrible, and Colbrelli isn't a climber. Mohoric is the only person they were missing. But remember that every team needs rouleurs/engines to pace on the flats to keep the GC guys towards the front on the flat stages and for plenty of other reasons. That's why Bahrain brought Arashiro and Tratnik to this Vuelta, but Tratnik wasn't great.

  • Rogla could've done two-step punch like he did to Mader in Paris-Nice S7. But he is a different rider after what happened in S8.

  • I thought you were going to say "before realizing as [Champoussin] crosses the line 'hold on, I forgot to zip up my jersey for my sponsor's photo op'." And I was wondering why he never went into the drops, and you're right - that stem is too long!
