Holly Williams speaks with an American fighter who has since left the front lines of Ukraine to deal with his PTSD. In southern Ukraine, the fighter who refers to himself by his call sign, Elvis, says he repeatedly witnessed Russian forces using white phosphorus munitions against them. He admits that he's profoundly traumatized and fears one of his former comrades could commit suicide because of what they went through together.

However, war is a costly way, in both material and human terms, to solve problems. Moreover, warfare often creates the hatred and hardened hearts that lead to the chronic distrust between countries. It almost guarantees that you'll pass on the same problems to the next generation. If you're going to choose fighting, you best ensure there is a strong moral imperative you're defending. To do otherwise only leaves countries with shattered economies, and vets as well as the local populace with fractured minds.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus

    • Still largely a counter-insugency. In Ukraine its a toe to toe battle with an adversary that outguns you with no air support, no overwhelming firepower to call upon if you're in danger of being overrun and inadequate supply. I suspect fighting in Ukraine would be a rude awakening even for a Vietnam vet. A Korean vet may have experienced something more like it, but even then a US soldier had more lavish support and infrastructure. Its hard to imagine an experience a US serviceman would have gone through that compares. Bastogne, Iwo Jima or Meuse-Argonne would probably be the closest, but being on the receiving end of Russia's massed artillery barrages in the summer would have been a horrific experience like being in the trenches of WW1.

  • I do not have anything against freedom fighting. What is going on there is real war not occupation policing that most of Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans are used too. Many vets have said just because you were in Afghanistan and Iraq you may not be able to handle Ukraine/Russia war. Even though he is an American vet that has my respect I do not believe he should be granted VA PTSD in another countries war. There is a difference between service to ones country and mercenary wounds. And the US needs to separate the two.

  • While I'm horribly sad for what this man went through, I'm happy that the US is putting it's money where it's mouth is. The amount of Americans choosing freely to go across the world to fight for a cause they strongly believe in shows that Moscow's propaganda on US aid is total lies...though there is much more evidence that states that more clearly. I'm proud of my fellow countrymen for this and happy the Ukrainians aren't just fighting with American munitions but real American soldiers.

Can you imagine what our world would look like the isolationists had won the argument? The fact is that it's impossible for the US to remain a superpower with an isolationist attitude. Our economy would be ruined. Whether people like it or not we live in a vastly interconnected world and one of the main reasons the US has stayed on top is because as Obama said, "We have our hands in everybody's business."

Not going up against a full scale army from a massive nation. It’s no wonder these “volunteers” usually leave after 2-3 weeks.
