As rescuers in a remote area of the Atlantic Ocean are racing against time to find the missing submersible carrying five people on a mission to document the wreckage of the Titanic, we look back to the endeavour launched by filmmaker James Cameron to explore the depths of the ocean.
In this 2012 60 Minutes story, Cameron talked about what made him want to explore the blackest depths of our oceans, as far as man has ever ventured, piloting a tiny sub eleven kilometres below the water's surface.

Stockton Rush knew his submersible was unsafe. The fact that a video game controller was responsible for returning the members aboard safely from 13,000 feet is insane. RIP to all of those onboard.

  • Cameron's sub was built by the best and they took every precaution possible. He had the best team of engineers and experts and would meticulously go over the tiniest details such as washers made from one material vs another. Almost a borderline fanatic when it came to safety and protocols which is what you want when it comes to exploration. NatGeo was a partner with him and dedicated an entire issue to his dive, so if you can find it, it's pretty amazing since it shows you the schematics of the sub. Stockton Rush? Bough his lights from Camper World and ran his "sub" with a wireless Logitech controller. 🙄

To be in the dark, at the bottom of the ocean, trapped with other people, slowly losing oxygen, and having nothing but your thoughts, knowing that your probably dying and can’t do anything about it. This story explains the millions of dollars and expertise that was put into the sub that James went down in compared to the $250,000 it cost for the one that is missing and runs with a PlayStation or Xbox controller. You’ve all seen the videos by now surely. James said he knew it could be a one way trip and there was no hope of rescue if he got stuck down there. So the thumbnail was correct as it explained why there’s no hope of rescue, because there’s no craft that can make the journey.

There are no space vehicles that pack enough delta-v to be able to go rescue anything on another orbit then back to the station. Although it is possible, I suppose, to launch help from the ground - after all Sputniks rendez-vous with the ISS all the time then come back.

    • Animals at these kind of depths don't have flesh and bones like ours, and in fact lifeforms in the abyssal (3000m) and lower zones generally do not have skeletal structures at all, and instead have elongated bodies consisting of a kind of "jelly" flesh that gives them a low enough density to withstand high pressures. They also do not generally "move around like normal". Species in the lower depths prefer to wait for food that falls from the upper zones rather than hunt, in order to conserve energy due to the sparseness of food.

  • Condolences to all surviving family members of the lost submersible. As a fellow explorer, it pains me to know ‘basic safety’ was overlooked. A) The-pinnacle of irresponsibility was in the outright violation of ‘the 2 man rule’. Not having a sister vessel, while launching into the deep, to serve as: -mid-point communications relay -safety observer &, -emergency SAR (search & rescue) … was the problem (above all other issues)! B)The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) may become involved.
