Five things to know about the Bull Terrier
The bull terrier is the canine version of a stand up comic. This breed is as entertaining as it is energetic. If you’re interested in making a bull terrier your next pet, here are five things that you should know.
5. At the start of the 19th century Bull and Terrier breeds were developed from stock of the Old English bulldog and Old English Terriers. These dogs were the perfect combination of the terrier’s speed and dexterity and the Bulldog’s tenacity. Their initial work was vermin control and animal based blood sports.
4. The first modern bull terrier, a bull terrier with the now iconic egg shaped head with no stop was Lord Gladiator, in 1917.
3. All Bull Terrier puppies should be checked for deafness. Like many all white dogs, the all white Bull Terrier suffers from pigment related deafness. It occurs at a rate of about 20 percent in pure white Bull terriers. While only 1.3 percent of colored Bull Terriers suffer from deafness.
2. Due to the medical problems associated with the all white bull terriers, Ted Lyon and others began introducing color, for this they used stock from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Bull Terriers with colors were officially recognized by the AKC in 1936
True to the moniker Bull, the Bull Terrier is both independent and stubborn. However, it loves people and is amenable to discipline. Translation, it’s not going to be easy but it is doable to train a bull terrier, to be a good canine citizen. With proper training and socialization, their personality is described as courageous, full of spirit, with a fun-loving attitude,[7] a children-loving dog and a perfect family member.
There you have five good things anyone considering owning a bull terrier should know.

  • Had one for 12,5 years and was my very best friend. Beautiful dog, very kind to children and other dogs. A bull terrier does not sit beside you on the couch but sits on you... 😂. So much love from this breed. Rip my dear friend 😉

    • My patterdale likes to sit on me not next to me,sometimes I'm sure he's playing a power game with me by trying to shove his arse as close to my face as possible. All bull terriers were originally bred from patterdale stock.

  • They call bull terriers gentlemen of the dogs because they never like to start a fight but when they are in one they finish it off

    @PenguinandRhino@PenguinandRhino7 жыл бұрын
    • they will start a fight,prey drive is strong in them as for finishing it depends of the opponent

      @BoxyTheSpaceDog@BoxyTheSpaceDog6 жыл бұрын
    • Finish things off? maybe with smaller dogs, but as you started this train of logic I would you to entertain the idea of a Cane Corso or a Kangal starting things, would a bull terrier really "Finish it" Don't buy this dog if you think it's a "Finish it" dog. Yes this dog has a tenacious fighting spirit and exhibits a lot of the same alpha qualities as larger dominant breeds but by no means does this make true. I love this breeds but it A typical small dog syndrome with pose. You buy this breed because of its funny cool personality, the scary look to the unknowing masses, the it's not another lab or golden etc.

      @patriotz3547@patriotz35476 жыл бұрын
    • Bigger dog doesn't mean it's gonna win the fight.Dogs of Bull Terrier type being Pit/AmStaff or Stafford or Bull Terrier were designed for dog fights.Maybe best of all here is Stafford because it's most tenacious and fastest of the bunch with perfect strength to size ratio,that's needed in dog fights.Maneuverability,speed,fearlessness and tenacity along with high pain threshold.I could say Sharplaninatz(dog I had that hunts and kills wolves)could beat any dog in a fight but that wasn't the case when in head on fight with boxer it lost due to boxer taking his hind leg off because boxer was faster,smaller and once it grabbed the hind thigh of shepherd it never let go until leg was completely disjointed.One on one there are only few dogs that would survive encounter with Bull Terrier.Why?Because that dog has highest pain threshold out of all dogs,prey drive that just excels once under attack and never lets up.That's trademark of all bull type dogs.Reason being is that larger dog needs to bend so it could get hold of smaller bull terrier type dogs,it's not it's natural fighting size and speed so any larger dog will have a lot of problems with smaller,faster and highly determined bull terrier breeds.Against a person I will still favor smaller than larger dog,no matter how powerful,why?Because the larger the dog the bigger the target and slower that dog in fight will be.So I would to be hones take Bull Terrier for guarding and personal protection over larger dogs because it has everything needed to do the job well,same can be said for dog fights(although I love dogs as animals so I would stay away from any encounter because Bull terrier might get injured also).Dogs are to be loved,never to be used in any fight.

    • My AmStaff was a finisher. My EBT has no idea of what fight means. He would rather run and roughhouse with his GSD girlfriend. She outweighs him by near 30 lbs and protects him from anything.

      @alwaysopen7970@alwaysopen79706 жыл бұрын
    • EBT is no push over but was unsuccessful in the fight scene in the early century so was used more for rat baiting etc and the other bulldog (pittbull type)used for fighting

I guess I just love terriers in general but the bull terrier is so affectionate, funny, quirky, and super smart. I will agree that the most important thing is socializing your bull terrier.

  • Had an English bull terrier and Chihuahua mix best dog I ever had, she was used for children that had autism and used at a senior facility as a therapy dog, best thing about her was she was willing to try anything even if I knew it was soething she didnt want to do. I could still teach her new tricks when she was 7 years old. I had her for 13 years until she became blind and had develope heart problems. I tried to save her, but I only had 2 weeks with her until she passed away in her sleep. I wish people would breed these dogs more often.

  • I like the opening for these videos. That classic sound followed by a slowing-down stop to the song to get into the video. A very artful/creative opening. The Bull terrier - the true bulldog-and-terrier dog. From another informative Dogumentary TV video with Richard F. Stratton, it would seem that some folks believe that the history of Bull terriers sometimes gets mixed up, or shared, with the American Pit bulldog's history. While some folks say that the American Pit bulldog is a mix of bulldog and terrier, Mr. Stratton believes that the American Pit bulldog is the original bulldog, while the Bull terrier is a product of bulldog and terrier blood. I've heard it said that blood from other breeds such as Dalmatian, Spanish pointer, Whippet, Borzoi, and Rough collie were put into the Bull terrier later on, but I'm not exactly sure. I reckon that would explain the change in appearance from looking more like a Pit bulldog or Staffordshrie Bull to how it looks now.

    @Swell_Character@Swell_Character7 жыл бұрын
    • All of those were used. This is not mentioned by many breeders because it seems weird. The borzoi is responsable for the shape of the head actually ;-). Others for various reasons including, coloring, drive, high human tolerance, etc... The current bt has little to do with the Bull and Terrier dogs of the 19th century.

  • Having owned, trained and loved many BT's I'd firstly recommend that anyone planning to own one should be an experienced dog owner - The Bull Terrier is not for those who lack a spine - a good BT owner needs to be firm, needs to be the Alpha and must create both structure and boundaries for his dog. And please remember that these are not 'tough' dogs that are suited to wankers with small dicks, they are actually total lap dogs that love living indoors, enjoy sleeping under a blanket and really have a need to be a true member of your family.

Warning ⚠️ these dogs have a lot of energy and have the tendency to knock everything down when they are excited. Perfect bowling balls. I’ve owned Dobermans my whole life, after loosing my son I couldn’t buy another, so my wife surprised me with cooper the bull terrier! He has honestly won my heart and is perhaps the most loving dog I have ever owned. They need a lot of love constant attention and of course very expensive food because cooper has sensitive skin. She growled in the deepest way, I got up off my chair and looked around the doorway and a man was listening to our conversation. HOW DID SHE KNOW? I tell you they are good guard dogs, my Bully was loving to everyone. At the park she would run up to a group of people talking and flick the ball out of her mouth. "Who wants to throw my ball, and play with me?" She was a gem💝.

    • Matt Fontwell Not in the UK there isn't. The Kennel Club makes no distinction between mini and full ad there is no standard hight requirement. All dogs and bitches should however been in proportion and males should look masculine and bitches should look feminine.

  • I've gotta ask, why the egg shaped head, I've seen old pictures of them without that, but is there any use or advantage to or from it? or is it purely cosmetic?
