ShadoeFax ... Yeah, I meant terminology-wise. And mothers are held to a high standard for good reason. Fathers should be too. My point is that women are barking up the wrong tree by saying that in the modern era, they don’t get any plaudits for raising kids alone. They’re unsung heroes and every decision they make is justified. There was a #1 song a little while ago with a music video that showed the single mom stripping and holding it up as a noble example of making ends meet for her kids. Virgin Mary, what?
Its just genious that the photography turns Laura into a giant and Scarlet into a harmless baby
That is true!
Laura Dern's portrait of Nora really showed how lawyers can be egotistical, hateful and how they don't see their clients as people, but as victories. At the end of the movie, Nora even tells Nicole how she "won" because she got extra custody with a clause at the end of the divorce. She truly never cared for Charlie or Nicole's feelings, she just wanted to win.
What's even worse is Nicole claiming to want to remain friends with Charlie while becoming close friends with someone who loved dragging him through the dirt. Nicole could be just as dirty in her own way too, she wasn't a victim in it, she also had an ego on her in how she was jealous of Charlie starting to get more spotlight than her. Great acting from Laura in this type of role.
It sucks but they have to.
@@TheStrawberryCloud 100% agree, in the scene when it's revealed that Nicole have seem a bunch of lawyers so Charlie couldn't have one I thought "What a bitch" but I knew that had Nora's stink all over it.
That kind of women we get when they understand “virgin that gives birth” attitude from men.
So? And? What’s your point.
I love ScarJo in this scene. The way she's looking and slightly nodding at Laura Dern like she's some Messiah, or leader of a movement and that she'll believe every word this woman says because she's saying things she's never heard before
That just proves how foolish, naive, and short-sighted Scarlett Johansson's character is. If she knew better she would have seen how calculating, cold, cruel, deceptive, and manipulative Laura Dern's character is. Ignorance can blind people to the very truth that is staring them right in the face. The truth is Nora Fanshaw was a man-hating piranha masquerading as a true feminist.
@@xyPERSON I remember towards the end of the movie how she told Nicole that she got her more than 50% of their child’s custody because she didn’t want Charlie bragging to his friends. That proved she was just an immature little girl at heart

she sounds truly satanic when she says that. she's clearly never read the Bible, the Quran or anything not resembling a law book.
Um, since Jesus is technically God Incarnate, that isn't actually true lol
Indeed, God did show up in Mary’s son Jesus because he is the God. Also, Mary wasn’t perfect as many like to portray her, especially in Catholicism. She had to provide sacrifice in Jerusalem as she was sinful (see Luke 2:24). After the resurrection, the only way for Mary to be saved was to believe in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. And so she did. The same goes for everyone else.

I'm tired of hearing people that all Laura Dern did was reading her lines. TBH, I just like the accuracy of how manipulative lawyers can be at times. It doesn't matter if she is good or bad. It's the craft that matters. I hope she finally gets the Oscar.
Laura Dern did a good job, but as far as excellence in acting is involved, she is not the best supporting female performance of the year. I love her as an actress, I adored her in this film, but to be completely objective, she was not the strongest performance
Adil El Nhaily yeah, she fit the part, but other parts of others movies this past year just had much more excelled parts regarding supporting roles
I thought Florence SHOULD’VE won, but they academy likes to give to who is due.
I agree she perfectly showed how lawyers can be. They can act like your friend when at the end of the day you are little more than a transaction as they do whatever they can to win or at least get the better half of a legal dispute, or in this case a divorce settlement. She didn't care that Nicole wanted 50/50 custody. She wanted to win and she didn't want Charlie to leave with any satisfaction
@@ags5696 i think it’s a bit more complex than that. Yes, on one hand she could be competitive and put that spirit over the needs of her client. At the same time as a female lawyer with similar experiences she also saw her client in some of her most vulnerable moments and was genuinely a friend and support to her. Those two things can go together
sad but ultimately true

Anyone who loves actors and the craft of acting needs to watch Laura Dern’s journey through the years. She is a powerhouse.

This is so damn realistic. To the eyes of everyone my dad always seems like a better and more ideal parent. But it's my mom who was the one who had jobs both at work and at home taking care of her children while my dad spent most of his free time sleeping and laying around. Still people respect him more over my mom and on a certain level, he actually believe that he took better care of the family than my mom. The man doesn't even know his own son's birthday lolol.
It's realistic in your anecdotal experience, not in the grand scheme of things. My anecdotal experience is kinda the opposite, dad was the real parent I had. But I won't come and say this scene is not real because in my case it wasn't that way, I will say it's not real because it's too stupid and naive and grossly generalizing the situation and another casual dads are useless cliche which became boring and repetitive

Frankly, Im seeing a lot of fathers and mothers here. But as A CHILD. As A CHILD, after hearing this monologue, I realize how easily Ive let my father off the hook but couldnt do the same for mom. Ever flaw of hers was exemplified, magnified, scrutinized and interpreted to my standard of a "good mother". Damn right! This monologue here is.
That’s very honest. I’m glad you’re able to assess your own viewpoints and be levelled and critical. Most people can’t do that. It shows a ton of maturity and wisdom
Oddly enough I feel the complete opposite. My dad has given up his dream career and probably the final 20 years of his life to raise my family, and only now I’m realising the extent of his sacrifice. My mum may be the one who remembers my D.O.B, but my Dad is the one who remembers why he is making the parental sacrifices. I get that my experience may be the exception not the rule but I just thought I’d show some appreciation for my dad.
This is kinda true. When a child succeeds in life both parents get the credit, but all of problems and failures are blamed on the mother. She’s always first in line in the firing squad.
I may not have too much, if any, say in this as a teenager, but I think this moment is just so honest. My dad and mom are both two of, if not THE best people I know, but even I tend to shrug off my dad’s faults a lot more than my mom’s.
You can watch this scene over and over and still be wowed. Every line is accurate and powerful.

This has got to be one of the best female monologues I have ever seen!
This scene is perfect. Some of you must’ve seen the street interview in Jimmy Kimmel where they asked dad how well did they know their children. Most of them are so ridiculous to the point they don’t even remember their eyes colour or their birthday. People are making jokes and memes in the comment section, I would be so curious to see how the comment section turn out if it was the mother who forgot such basic things, the comments would be full of people condemning her irresponsibility, but somehow to father, this can all slip away. And people are in awe when a father knows how to change a diaper, take their kids to school, knows how to fold clothes, knows how to tutor their children, but again, no credits are given when its a mother. These kind of normal behaviour of how a responsible parent should act are being overlooked when it comes to father, and people are shocked when a father actually commits to that, isn’t it supposed to be normal? Why does the society normalise such things? It’s something we should truly reflect on
"why does society normalize such things?" we normalize constant warfare and this is your main concern? a clip from the Jimmy Kimmel show expresses the depth of parenting to you? that's sad.

I found this speech and Dern’s delivery of it just riveting! Is the whole virgin birth/absentee father thing the reason women are held to a higher standard? It’s sure part of it. I kept going back to this scene. Thanks for capturing it!
Maybe the reason men are absent in father role is the woman herself who seems to be bitching about him being absent when she is the reason to initiate divorce and kick him out, take half his shit. Laura is helping her achieve that yet she does not realize the hypocrisy in this
I agree that father has to be present as much as he can with the kid and maybe he was but he had to do his job as well to feed them and take care of his needs but instead divorcing him would make him even more absent and emotionally broken. Don't you think?

At first i thought the text of this scene was just another scene, in another of thousands movies. But looking at it with a calmer mood, i think its brilliantly Epic, Laura dern says in 1min a truth that we all know its a Truth, lets be honest, women are expected to do a million things more than men. When you get into a family house, and the house is a dirty mess, whos the first person you blame in your mind for not maintain the house clean?...
You can tell who's the target audience of this movie by just this scene.
She is absolutely right! And not only that. When they’re arguing and he says he wishes she were dead among some other ‘beautiful’ stuff, you can feel how women have always set the path so men can achieve their goals and succeed. While women have to take on every burden and difficult tasks, they just get away with everything because It’s not their mission to accept and/or face certain conflicts and end up acting in a childish way and dodging the issue because they don’t know how to tackle serious issues as they are men and they get frustrated when dealing with serious problems that have to do with responsibilities or emotions.
