Bill Gates calls Steve Jobs a 'wizard' who saved Apple

Steve Jobs was a wizard who "cast spells on people" to help keep Apple afloat during the company's darkest days, according to longtime rival Bill Gates.
The Microsoft (MSFT) founder discussed his and Jobs' leadership styles with CNN's Fareed Zakaria Sunday. Both men are known for being tough leaders who foster an intense workplace culture.
Gates said people often emulate the negative elements of the Apple (AAPL) founder's personality, but Jobs was also a unique leader who took Apple from near-death to its pedestal as the most valuable company in the world (before Microsoft usurped that crown this year). Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy when Jobs rejoined the company in the late 1990s; it is now worth just shy of $1 trillion.

    • @@philiplauren7024 The NeXT workstation was a great machine for rapid design and prototyping. It combined robust Xerox Unix networking, object oriented programming, and a graphical interface nicely. These were all ideas from Xerox PARC. Steve was instrumental in browbeating capable engineers to turn this into a product. In typical Steve fashion he took all of the credit, screwed the people who did the actual work, and ran costs to an astronomically high level. The NeXT was $10,000 in the 80's. In the end the toxic culture he had created at Apple needed it's iconic con man back. So they bought NeXT from Steve and welcomed him back. While steve was gone people began to realize that Apple was overpriced stylized vaporware. Upon his return he was able to con them back into paying $3000 for a $1000 PC again. He then added a touch screen to the Blackberry with some new software and sold it as the Iphone after copying the MP3 player from creative labs and calling it the Ipod. So yeah, he was a rich douchebag. But gay people thought he looked good in a turtleneck and jeans.

    • @@FMD023 Exactly, when Jobs returned to Apple the company was on the verge of bankruptcy thankfully it was also during the time when Microsoft was investigated for monopolistic practices which therefore led to them investing into Apple and signing a co-usage patent agreement... without everything that happened and finally Microsoft investing into Apple it was very unlikely that Apple would have gone bankrupt.

    • Why is this myth retold over and over. It wasn’t the money which helped Apple back in 1997 but the agreement made with Microsoft to drop the lawsuits and continue developing Software for the Mac. Apple was in dire situation at the time but the $100M wouldn’t have made much of a difference if Microsoft effectively stopped publishing Excel on their desktops.

      @fxmtoeclipse@fxmtoeclipse4 жыл бұрын
    • @@fxmtoeclipse It is not a myth, it actually happened and I would suggest go into actual legal documents and look it up. Or watch interviews of Jobs explaining how Apple had only weeks of finances left to stay in business, in 1997. Of course, it was a beneficial deal for most parties, not because of the dropped lawsuits but mainly because the US government was about to break up Microsoft into multiple companies due to their monopolistic position in the market and anti-competitive practices. Apple got some cash, plus at least 5 years of MS Office support of Mac OS (which they needed since majority of PC were sold to business customers and there was, and arguably still isn't, any serious competition to MS Office). Microsoft gained a healthy competitor that had been sinking for years, during the years when Jobs was absent, and Apple made Internet Explorer the default browser on Mac OS, which was exactly what MS needed to fully take over Netscape. The lawsuits from Apple, against MS, at the time, were minor annoyances to a market leader controlling back then controlling over 80% of desktop OS market share, majority of internet browsers, and being the sole player in productivity enterprise software. After all this, in my opinion, the lawsuits were silly either way since the first graphical user interface was developed by Xerox, which then was used for "inspiration" by both companies... look up documentaries on this, fascinating history. But all that, and how much of one or the other platform was truly original is debatable... MS has always insisted on using their own coding languages, their own fork of Javascript in IE etc. etc. etc. and this deal also helped both companies to come together and share some of each other's patents, and did I forget to mention how they agreed to collectively contribute to Java... anyway, there's a lot in this deal, but mainly the facts are that Apple was on the brink of bankruptcy in 1997 confirmed by Jobs, MS needed to prove that there is any competition for them which seemed harder and harder to prove without a healthy competitor, and they both excelled in complementary areas that helped to bring more choice and innovation to the market.

  • Good stuff, nice interview, except, Next Step wasn't nonsense! The software and UI innovation it had was incredible for the late 80's/early 90's. In fact, many of the core ideas of the Next Os were adopted to create Mac Os X, which is now a very successful Os, used by 15% of the people using a computer on the planet (over 22% in the form of iOs), and is considered one of the most advanced and stable Os's in existence.

    • @@a.h.543 He was a creative liar. He lied to Woz about the money they earned from Atari. He lied to his girlfriend about being the dad of their daughter. But the biggest lie is that Apple products make life better. Apple products made social interaction obsolete. People no longer talk to each other at parties. They all stare at their iPhones or iPads.

  • Bill's drive back in those days is something people need more of today. Of course, people don't want to work over 12 hours a day - but they knew what it took to get the job done and they did it! I love watching Bill Gates talk with his hands - he is definitely weaving more magic and is more of a wizard then he thinks as well!!

  • whats amazing about their friendship and rivalry at the same time was, bill gates gave Steve huge amounts of money to bring his company back, because bill gates knew exactly he will get further with a great rival, he saw that one in Steve Jobs who then made apple great! but bill gates in fact a big part of that, a financial part. what a great human. 2 geniuses for sure. and very respectful, he would not have given him money otherwise

Aside to that story, business wise as long as numbers are good its all good.
