HowTo Guide - Exporting from Google Maps into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
*DISCLAIMER*
This is not for profit, purely for education and any of the techniques shown on here are already shown in a number of other videos on KZhead so I am doing nothing unique, simply just showing the end to end process.
If at any point this video is requested to be taken down by copyright holders or any other legal power then I will promptly oblige with any request. I don't want to get in trouble or cause intellectual harm to any 3rd party.
*****************
Here is my comprehensive guide of how to take photogrammetry model data from Google Maps and import it in to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
I will be exporting the football stadium Villa Park in Birmingham UK and placing it into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and replacing the default scenery.
The process uses RenderDoc to export Google Maps data and import it into Blender, where the model is tidied up and exported in the MSFS2020 format.
Then the MSFS2020 SDK is used to load in the model data and hide the existing model data.
The tools required are:
* Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/micr...)
* Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 SDK (forums.flightsimulator.com/t/...)
* Google Chrome (www.google.com/intl/en_uk/chr...)
* RenderDoc (renderdoc.org/)
* Blender 2.83 (www.blender.org/download/lts/)
* MapsModelsImporter (github.com/eliemichel/MapsMod...)
* Blender2MSFS (www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/res...)
Finally, a big shout out to the: West Africa Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Club KZhead channel ( / @westafricavirtualairt... )
I never would have figured this stuff out if it wasn't for the videos on that channel, so please go check it out and drop a sub over there!
2:04 - Install SDK
3:15 - Set Up Folders & update XML
10:00 - Shopping list & Tools installation
12:48 - Start Renderdoc & inject into Chrome
16:17 - Capture model into Renderdoc
18:36 - Launch Blender & enable addons
19:32 - Import model to Blender and remove unwanted geometry
24:53 - Export from Blender to gftf to PackageSources/modellib (create textures folder)
26:10 - Blender export settings
28:00 - Update XML to 1.1 style
29:35 - Open FS2020 & locate area with dev camera
30:28 - Open Project Editor in FS2020
31:05 - Build Package
31:14 - Open Scenery Editor
31:32 - Load scene into editor
32:06 - Remove existing model from scene using polygon - ctrl-click to add points
33:08 - Show properties for polygon - exclude all
33:45 - Add model object to scene
34:05 - Scale object to 48.5x
34:20 - Rotate & translate into place, uncheck 'snap to ground' to move on Y-axis
38:05 - Enable terraforming for polygon if needed
40:50 - Save Scenery to packasgesources/scene as shape & scene files
41:30 - Build Package again
42:15 - Close scenery editor (reverts to default model)
42:31 - Exit FS2020. locate files in project/packages & copy to Community folder
43:26 - Launch FS2020 to establish location of Community folder
45:41 - Observe results
The fact that it’s not that difficult to do this is amazing. Can’t wait for what the community will make in a few months.
Its almost as if it was designed to do this ;) Not that MS are endorsing said actions.
Not that difficult? I was just thinking this looked near impossible for me to be able to do it.

I thought that I detected a brummie accent.
Thanks for the time stamps i'll add them to the description!
pmsl up the Villa.. still remember the day at Villa park, when we sent you down .. 3.2
I'm re-working my notes on the process and I have the following corrections to the above = at 24.53 the folder to create is 'texture' NOT 'textures' (getting this wrong gives you an all white model in FS2020) and the file type is 'gltf', not 'gftf' (but that's just my bad typing). Looking at the comments, it appears that the output xml (at 28:00) no longer needs to be updated, as an update to the file export add-on for Blender has rectified this. (I haven't tested that myself yet)
This is an absolute gift to the community - many thanks for taking so much effort to put this together!
What a tutorial ! This can change everything for the MSFS Community and for the future of MSFS. Thank you very much ! David
I really hope that people find a repository for things like this. Start putting them into packs that the community as a whole can start referencing and using. This was a great tutorial. Great tutorial. Good drinking game - take a shot every time "Villa Park" is said!
ie edfe ite
That is really neat that you can see the stadium from all sides, not just the side that you used to grab it from Google Maps. Your plane's shadow on the stadium as you flew by was an added bonus!
Brilliant!! In FS9 and FSX I spent just as much time downloading and creating real world aircraft and liveries, re-modelling airports so all the gates were correct and building an actual real world airline schedule to improve the experience as I did flying. I can see this becoming my new obsession to build the areas a regularly fly with the right landmarks.
this makes the game to the next level even after already a masterpiece !
Absolutely brilliant buddy, i spend 8 hours yesterday in blender, i managed to capture what i wanted and baked it like in other videos i watched but you have took me to the next step, god must have answered my prayers, this video is made by the people for the people, if google bring it down shame on them. at this strange time in the world everyone needs to give a bit of love even google lol. Thanks, can you do a video for night time also sometime when convenient and maybe lighting of the night seen. awesome video.
when selecting vertices in edit mode, if you turn on "toggle x-ray" button to the left of the wireframe/textured mode buttons, then when you select the vertices it will select through the model instead of having to do multiple passes for each object.
I was thinking exactly the same thing!!
I finally got the hang of it, thanks to your excellent tutorial. I've been cranking out all the landmarks that make my small city recognizable from the air (which were missing or nothing like the real thing) at the rate of about one every 15 minutes. It's that moment in every simmer's experience when I can now spend more time tweaking than flying LOL. Thanks again for the effort.
FYI: if you select X-ray mode when you go into edit mode then you will select all of the vertices at one time. By default, you only select the ones you can see. :)
@@fastbackseventyseven3553 Ditto :)
2 days ago I started rebuilding the whole city I live in, with google maps 3d data , it is just so addicting and pretty incredible to have tools like this right now. Your video will help a lot of new peeps interested in injecting superdetailed and realistic data into the sim. Also, you didn't bake the textures or make any uv manipulation of your data, which is good if you don't want any degradation of the original 3d data.
Yeah I didn't want to delve too deeply into textures and blender functionality here. This is more of a "how to do the end to end" guide (which is still almost an hour!) I didn't want it to be a "how to blender tutorial" there are plenty of those on youtube that are way better than I could do :p
@@FlyingTheston Yeap, I figured. :P Sometimes keeping it simple is the best way to explain things. Something that everyone should know, is that when you export an almost raw, unfiltered/non manipulated 3d model like you did with it's original textures, you can get the best quality possible. All the video tutorials available on KZhead have the process of baking as a "golden standard", when injecting google maps 3d data. But for smaller scale projects (like certain landmarks or buildings) i would definitely prefer the simplified process you showed in your video. For city chunks (as an example) with millions of vertices , the fastest way is to follow the uv mapping and baking process in Blender. It all depends on what you want to achieve.
How do you guys do an entire city? Capture parts of it and then merge in blender?
@@JonAnderMB So the easiest way to do it is just capture regions of the city and then add them all together in blender. but i dont think this technique yields the best result. i think its better to take key buildings and then add them to the existing auto gen scenery to blend it all in together
@@FlyingTheston Ok, this is what I-m trying to do: I've created a main project "Mycity" and inside, I'm trying to generate multiple packages> one for each "key" building... however, after I move it to the community folder, I see no building replaced for what I edited... :( - Probably got to research a bit more....
Perfect instructions, I already imported a sports arena in our capitol. Lots of steps, but simple and very easy to follow.
Brilliant walk through from start to finish. Making these videos takes a lot of time and patience. Thank you for sharing your expertise. :)
Bing maps just need to up their map game. Time for new world scans.
indeed, i have noticed that many places that are missing in the game is because the satellite pictures in Bing have clouds in them, for example, most of my home city in Panama, Central America appears to be covered by clouds, so i guess the game doesnt know how to handle that, in contrast, google maps data of my country doesnt have any clouds covering anything.
@@LyricsFred bing maps has maybe a hundred highly detailed cities, (or more, maybe less idk) but generally otherwise it looks worse than gmaps
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j yes but the more detailed cities have old imagery, Google has more recent stuff.

yea it seems like the maps are from 2014-2016
I can see some awkwardness between Google and Microsoft as everyone starts releasing mods like this.
This is the FltSim2020 as it should be. Using Google Maps instead of the inferior Bing (crap maps). But, sadly, will it ever happen?
@@letsseeif Actually google maps is way inferior to apple maps, not only does apple maps have more cities and suburbs modelled in even less popular places of the earth, their detail on these models are way higher. (there is currently one tool to do it, but the only issue is, is you need some files from osx to do it)
This is the reason why Tahiti Bora Bora look like crap in this sim
@@NibblyBitz but we are talking about bing maps, not apple maps
@@luciano_trivelli I know that, and I was comparing the detail of models ripped from google vs apple, meaning more people should have a look at apple maps if they are missing areas in their suburb.

What an excellent guide. Last night I added the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during construction into the game, and tonight I have added Glastonbury Tor.

Bro, You are a legend. 100,000 views, every single on is well deserved.
The reason why you have to select the verts (points) multiple times in Blender is because it only selects the visible verts. If you hit z on your keyboard it should go to wireframe mode, then if you select your verts again it should select them all in one go.
thanks! Great tip
To anyone encountering issues with render doc and import into blender: You need RD version 1.9 (not 1.10) that you can find here in the previous builds : renderdoc.org/builds You need Blender 2.83 (not 2.90) that you can find here : www.blender.org/download/lts/

DarthZackTheFirst How do you know it won’t? Technically it goes against Google’s policy. Using the Google Maps assets, I mean.

The easiest way in Blender:- Select all (A) Go to Edit mode (TAB) Make sure X-ray is on (Box on a box, top right of screen) Select circle select tool (C) Hold down SHIFT and paint area you want to keep. Press Esc to exit circle select. Press Delete and pick vertices. Tab back to Object Mode and Export as usual.

Whew.... after watching this, I was both exhausted and exhilarated at same time. Really great tutorial. At root, it's really a quite simple process, but with a bazillion steps. But then I m really good at following step-by-step instructions. It inspires me to dig into the downtown area of my hometown in Indiana, which looks nothing like the real thing. Besides, it seems the nature of flight simmers is to enjoy tweaking as much, if not more sometimes, as flying. Thanks again for the the stupendous effort.

@@andrewmorton9327 Same problem here how did you solve?
Paulo Costa There are two possible causes: 1. When you retyped the .XML file you left an extra ‘\’ in. 2. When you exported the Blender object you didn’t save it to the correct folders. The model should be in the ‘(myscene)model’ folder and the textures in the ‘texture’ folder one level up. If you can’t see your scene in the Objects list it’s because the program doesn’t know where to find it.

22:21 - if you see the object rendered it means the stuff you select will only apply to the stuff you can see, if you press the transparent option ( the sphere with the grid ) it makes it transparent and you can select whatever you want and delete it all.
That is brilliant mate, I'll give that a go. Thanks.
I've followed but when i try to look for the model in the objects window I can't see it? What could I be doing wrong?
Same here :/
I'm having the same problem
Did you move the package to the community folder and restart the sim.
I think I did a few things wrong, I had spaces in the names was able to get it in the end after watching another video.
@@sweetman1994 I am still trying....
I'm going to go ahead and admit that this is too hard for my old brain. I tried though.
Thanks so much! Alot to digest, but it can be done.
really nice video. gonna try some google-maps exports the next days. ;) thx BTW: you can switch between the modes (move/rotate/scale) with the middle mouse button / pressing wheel
working a whole day on a scenery and no way to find it in the "objects" tab inside the scenery editor..
I can't find the object too
@@Sbinott0 Got the same problem...
@@Sbinott0 Any solution to this?
Mike Echo Hey Mike i am still searching for a solution 🤷♂️
I had the same issue, too. I was able to solve by removing the slash in the .xml file as seen at 28:20 in the video (end of 2nd line of code).
this is awesome but complicated af
The Fact im watching the video 3rd time,im sure there will be a voice when i sleep tomorrow who says VillaPaaarkk. Thanks for the video anyway, good job
Thank you very much, for sharing your knowledge with us. Best explanation for using this tools. Very helpful. Stay healthy and have a nice christmas. Greetings from Germany
Maybe Google should just develop their own
or X Plane collaborating with Google? That would be awesome
@@edibakhtiarSuleiman Really awesome
@@edibakhtiarSuleiman I'm waiting patiently. Gonna get some cigars for when it happens
@@denziiey I sure hope that probabilty to become a reality...who knows right?
This is really hilarious. For a game that was praised to have everything included especially with regard to scenery and now Google data is being imported to replace MS Bing data. hahaha.
Brilliant mate - a Villa fan living in New Zealand - I just had to try and see if I could do this - took me a while but I got there eventually! Thanks for the great video
you could have just downloaded it ;) :D flightsim.to/file/267/aston-villa-stadium-villa-park-and-surrounding-buildings
I am interested in this tutorial, I wish I can create my living area successfully. Thank you for teaching.
1.3gb in 5 mins?! you sir, are not australian.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂 i feel this comment
My custom scenery does not appear in the object list, after building the package
Can anyone help out?
@@clifftonicstudios7469 Inside the MSFS right? Same problem here!!
@@juniorpasini9137 Yeah Ive done it all correctly
I can load the file in it just does not show in the scenery
@@juniorpasini9137 Did you solve it ?
I can now move Old Trafford down to Gloucester! Big thanks!
Thank you so much for this great tutorial :D
Lol google be downvotin! :p
Wel, they DID put it on my recommended list. hahaha
By the way, to all those who keep telling me multiple ways of selecting points in Blender.... I know you can use Xray mode :D
What a shame Bing exists at all. Had it not they would have cut a deal with google for a much much better world.
MSFS would never exist either if that were the case.
No they wouldn't.
What a great tutorial, no you are not great with Blender but you learned enough to get Villa Park in and out. I would suggest taking more care of what angle you choose to grab it from google maps first, and as others have said, in Blender by changing your view to wireframe you will delete all polygons/vertices in your selection. This will make clearing up your imported model so much easier. But good on you mucka, never thought I would be proud of a Villan - well done mate. I am from the same area-ish but a Utd fan (well it was Utd or Wolves when I started going to games with my Dad some 55 years ago :))
Thank you sir! This is very helpful!
still waiting for a mod that uses google maps instead of bing maps
thatd make this the perfect sim
This will probably never happen
@@lisztdylan7846 some one should mod it
@@notlegal99 would de almost impossible, think of all the space the Google data would take up on your pc, you could stream it but then they guy would have to host it all on his own server assuming Google doesn't shut down the op that would be difficult. Other option would Abe a deal with Google but that seems unlikely too
@@lisztdylan7846 It will never happen. There is no chance.
