Two-Man Chainsaw - Carburetor & Muffler [Restoration]
The time has come for this chainsaw restoration. This specific saw restoration is for me and I have been wanting to get to this tool for a long time. I started the disassembly in November 2018 and had to wait a while for some rare parts to arrive. This chainsaw is a McCulloch 99 two-man chainsaw made in 1954. The engine is 161cc and the powerhead alone is 51lbs making it one of the largest production chainsaws ever and the largest in McCulloch's production line at the time.
In this video, I focus on the complicated carburetor and broken muffler. The carburetor is uniquely designed by McCulloch to ensure the chainsaw always has a reason to not start or run. It is a labyrinth of small holes and tubes that I hopefully fully cleaned. My main concern is that I won't know I did something wrong until I try and run the saw. I had to make a new gasket with some new carburetor diaphragm material that I found online as I did not trust the old gasket to function optimally.
The muffler needed a lot of work! I cut the old dented parts off and used some thicker steel pipe and sheet metal to remake the muffler. I tried to design it so it was as close to original as I can get with the tools I have available to me. I am excited to hear what it sounds like.
In the next video I will work on the main powerhead and reassemble the whole saw so we can try and cut some wood!

Best of luck to you getting this thing running. I have heard tales from older loggers on how McCulloch chainsaws were notoriously hard starting. So hard that there is at least one out in a local forest having been thrown down a ridge by its owner after refusing to start for over 2 hours.
I have a legitimate fear about this not starting.

Ok born in 72 so 80s and 90s sitcoms were a staple in my life!! This was the funniest and best damn intro ever!! NEVER EVER CHANGE IT!!
Jericho Black -- 73 here, just the right time to be born for the late 70s (Star Wars etc.) and 80s movies and TV.
even though i was born in 2000 the 90's stuff was still aive and well
I have a soft spot in heart for 80's theme sitcoms the best!
@@09NXN06 you should watch scrubs its a 90's medical drama
born in 2005 ended up obsessed with old stuff
0:18 I'm so glad to have made my way into your videos, it's a big cameo for me.
Could become a recurring role too!
Hand Tool Rescue man, with all the residual checks I'll earn, I can buy as much Evapo-Rust as I want! What a great deal this is turning out to be! ;P
@@HandToolRescue you should ask for a DNA test first.....
This made my night. Thank you
This brings back the good old days. I use to go threw the dump and drag home coffee pots, fans, stuff like that. I didn't no what I was doing then, but I learned real fast.
Best tool restorer on youtube by far, with sense of humor, what else could a guy ask for.
Your videos are amazing. The combination of your goofy comedy style plus almost ASMR like restoring of old machines and miscellaneous things has me always waiting eagerly for a new video. You are my favorite content creator keep it up!
Thank you!
I love Banana Phone. Getting him for this production must have cost a fortune.
you're the only one I've saw that will show his face on here. Good for you. I use to do this in my younger days, back in the 60's and 70's.
I have been thinking about this project non-stop since yesterday. I'm so excited to see the rest done!
Let's hope it starts!
I feel like a kid on Saturday morning waiting for the new episode of his favorite show. I'm sure you're busy, but Ohmagod I can't wait. Lmao
I am amazed that you can remember where all those parts go. I use to pride myself that I could do that also. But, alas it all goes away as you age. Enjoy it while you can. You do such a great job.
He can always look at his own video in reverse. Lol.
These dang intros have my sides hurting. They're gold Jerry, GOLD!
agreed
Just saw that episode of sienfield
Too many cooks flashbacks >.>

This man is an inspiration. Because of him, I successfully restored a Norton Commando using his methodology and basic techniques. One of the finest mechanics I've ever seen.
This new intro just never gets old, Awesome!
he changed it slightly
I was thinkin pocket screw, but pocket hole joinery makes way more sense, and the clear coat was just the best ever. another Great Video Thanks for Sharing.
Please be advised this program is filmed in front of a live studio audience
so many people would balk at the idea of making a diaphragm when it's really easy. i am glad you did it.
I'm all teary-eyed from that intro. Bravo sir, bravo.
I love seeing you restore old tools. I am looking forward to seeing you finish this chainsaw
Total respect for making a new diaphragm. No seen that done in years.
Thank you!
I'm glad I suffer from insomnia or I wouldn't have seen this for another 8 hours and we all already wait long enough for these videos. The wait is always worth it though. Nice job!
I love your intro, it's like a parody of every inane 90s sitcom intro. Love the narrated videos, get to see more of your humor. Keep up the great work!
Your Intro is hilarious! Combining a little bit of comedy with craftsmenship really makes you unique on KZhead. Keep it up!
The way you open your videos with the smile and the montage, I love it. Good. Very good.
I’ve been watching since it was just Stanley planers and this one really shows off your skill. Creating a carb diaphragm and excellent ting welding skills. Amazing, I can not wait to see more of this project.
Literally my favourite restoration channel ever.
The intro is a riot! And just when I thought it couldn't get any better, you one upped yourself! Nice job. Thanks for the video.
Your shop chandelier is awesome. I'm glad your idea came to fruition.
This restoration brightened my day as I'm sat at home with the dreaded norovirus. There's almost as much nasty schmoo coming out of me as there is from that chainsaw!
Wow, I am amazed! Not many know the McCulloch name. Had twin Mc's on my go-kart back in the day. I really hope it runs.Great Video!!
Awesome! The carburetor diaphragm work blew my mind! Keep up the excellent work! Waiting for the next part....
Thank you.
I wish this was a regular tv show so that many others could enjoy the channel. Funny and interesting. Great work and amazing videos. So much better than the others. You are the man and keep up the great show.
Best sitcom intro EVER!!!
Your video production is better and better everytime. I enjoy when you pause and admit you f**ked up. It lets me know you are just as human as me. Keep up the great work.
Haha thanks!
As always, a wonderful and satisfying journey through the world of machines. But that intro is priceless!!
Remarkable man. Intro is still the best on KZhead lol.
You never fail to entertain and teach. Don't change anything. You have pure artistry on your channel.
What an incredibly complicated piece of equipment., an to think these saws were probably brutalized every day of its life. Your patience to see this project through is commendable !
yesssss the intro returns. I hope it stays forever!
These new intros are just....art.
As soon as I saw that you said there were no replacement parts, I KNEW you were going to have to make a new one. :P That's just Murphy at work.
Murphy = foreshadowing?
With that complicated carb all I can tell you is "May the Force Be With You!" What an over-complicated piece of hardware.
Your videos are worth waiting for... we would rather have one a week, but we'll take what we can get! Thanks for posting!
A carburetor on a chain saw that complex must have been designed by a very large committee!
money is a black hole. money only goes to money. that's the fate of every bullshit economy that has inflation and other scams in it. economy should be trade. nothing gained or lost. exact fixed value. but nooooooo. lets add rentals and inflation and other bullshit and ruin everything.
Love the videos. But if i can make a sugestion. Whenever i clean a saw, i make sure i clean any loose debris just to reduce the chance of it getting picked up and put into the cylinder. Once again love the videos, and i would love to see more chainsaw restorations.
just the opening introduction gets a thumbs up 👍by itself .
It was surgical the way you took apart the part with the diaphragm!!! I look forward to your videos Dr. Eric
My morning coffee and your video. What a great way to start a day.
Phew, you fixed it! Another great one!
More positive and uplifting than forensic files.
You talked! In English! Double surprised and I've watched dozens of your videos. Your awesome!
That was a great resto of carb and muffler system of the two man chain saw
Ahhh, my favorite bedtime ASMR video maker! Thanks for everything, I always look forward to new videos. 😀
I like paul sellers before bed personally. Good calm videos
except for that one jump scare where he talks
Nice work. I look forward to seeing the completed restoration. Nice use of pocket hole joinery as well.
Man my first break of the day watching something good
Banana phones and Nutella are a killer combination
One of the best combinations.
Good work, I like that stout muffler. Awhile back I saw someone use a crikcut to make new unatable gaskets.
Awesome show.. thanks for your time and effort... cheers
I wrote a comment about that missing brass filter, but was relieved to see you put it back. :)
You are the Pro of Restoration
Can't wait to see you get it all done and her her run
This intro was pure gold
The Intro is a Gas!!! I can't wait to see the next installment. The Chainsaw Trilogy.
Please don't ever lose your sense of humor, thanks.
Хороший хозяин, золотые руки!
I only vaguely understand what this does, but good god is it satisfying seeing it cleaned up.
It's a real pleasure to watch you work.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 That intro is amazing!! I can't wait for the total restoration of the chainsaw 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Omg I never hear anyone talk in these things till now and the intro man keep doing it love it
I like the sitcom style of intro! Bloody awesomeness!
Dude you are soo cool. I watch all your videos like meditation. I completely relax. :) Thank you for your hard work, you are doing a good job. I send you greetings from Moscow.
You have the best tool repair/restoration channel. I keep coming back
Man, you come up with the nastiest tools... nice work, especially with the diaphragm and muffler.
That is the maddest looking carb I've ever seen. I could not make sense of it. It reminds me of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine!
You are a true craftsman, looking forward to more of your videos!
This should always be the intro it had me Rollin, love the videos from my favorite channel!
I love the new opening sequence!!!!!! Great video as always!!!
So THAT'S what pocket hole joinery is! That makes way more sense than all of those jigs and whatnot that the woodworkers are using. haha I can also think of a couple good uses for that clear coat if I can get my hands on some. Another great episode, and thank you for the admitting to the mistake with the liquid gasket. I didn't know it dissolves in gas, but now I will if I'm ever in a similar situation. Keep up the great work.
That carburetor is INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!
wasn't gonna finish watching this.. but ... the intro really got me
I'm surprised your workbench didn't yet spontaneously combust, what with all the stuff that has soaked into it by now. xD But on a more serious note, another great restoration! :)
I figure it would be a "Super Fund Site" by now.
THE INTRO WAS EPIC!!!!!
I think it take a great person to admit when they made a mistake thumbs up and now we all know no liquid gasket near fuel great vid keep it up
That sigh of relief around 10:45... we were all feeling it.
I have to say I loved the '80s sitcom'-style intro.
Magnificent, as usual. Thanks man!
I'm a simple man, I see our hand tool caveman and I smash Thumbs Up.
The pocket hole joinery is flawless
With each VJO you are setting the bar higher. That’s one reason why you’re restoration channel is the best. For real restorations watch Hand Tool Rescue.
People dont understand that, while extremely pleasurable as restoring antiques like this is, its also super stressful. You can get 90% of the way through the job and find a part that broken and guess what? Replacement parts may or may not exist. Not many people can make a fuel pump diaphragm. My hats off to thee moose man of the north.
This intro made me proud to own one of your wrench’s.
Hahaha, nice.
your a very brave man to make a new diaphram mate...
Your work with the carb. is amazing..
Thread lock on flat head screws... Some men just want to watch the world burn. Awesome work, as always!
Espelusnantemente !!!increíble!!! La intro !!!!🤯🤯🤯!!!!!! Y excelente reparación!
I hope we get to see it run!! Awesome stuff
You are m'y favorite Channel, i love what you do and you did such a great job ! Greatings from France and keep going 🤗
Thank you!
at 20:40 OMG you almost made me wake up my wife from laughing I was thinking the same after you traced it out
Maybe its just my limited experience, but that is the craziest carburetor I've seen.
Best damn intro ive ever seen. I had to replay that before i could proceed with the video
Esta es por lejos la restauración más compleja que te he visto hacer. Buen trabajo. Saludos desde Honduras.😎👍👏
