  • I love it when Americans think they don't have any accent, like their version of English is the default one and every other English speaking country has derived their accent from it. :D

    • It's because compared to every other accent from multiple languages, our most common accent (Midwestern) is so fucking neutral sounding. Like, we sound very monotone compared to everyone else, and monotone is usually equivalent to a lack of a proper accent. However, the Midwestern accent mixed in with the overall Irish accent is how English used to sound before the American Revolution. Technically, our accent is very close to the "default," thought Australian or Canadian (depending on the regions) are even closer because they do have a mix of those two accents (again, in some regions). A bit of linguistic history.

I have a much more "Generic American" accent, and my cousins have a more noticeable Southern twang to theirs, and they asked my sisters and I once "Why y'all talk so funny?" in like the most hick accent, like..     • What kind of English i should speak then, since i speak a romance language (italian specifically)? Here there are such a lot of accents, idk if also in anglophone countries the accent change in a range of a few miles like here (also because of medieval particularism, i guess) but the "default english" you learn in school (not exactly my case) is basically the british english i think. So i'm a little bit confused but i often wonder how would sounds my accent if i spoke english with an american person or a british or anyone from an anglophone country. It seems to me that in America for example, looking at cinema or tv series, the english language spoken by italian people is full of accent of south, sicilia, campania, when actually those accent are completely different from my region, and as i wrote before, even in my region accent change in a distance of 15 km (9-10 miles). I should choose an accent? XD However, the english i learned until now, i've learned more in music, interviews, film and series than on the books...english to me is a language more "spoken" that "written", sorry if i made gramatical mistakes...it's such a interesting subject when we spoke about languages and how we relate to it. Anyway british accent is very hard to follow, like southern american accent (i think) But i also think that the most difficult thing in a language is "think" in that language. That is the most important point for me, as i live in a small town in the center of this beautiful but so hard to live for people with my personality. End of topic LOL
