    • Cub: "Mom, they're pointing something at us." Mom: "Is it long and thin, or short and fat?" Cub: "Umm. . . The second one, I guess. . . And now one of them is pointing it at her own face-" Mom: "Tourists. They're not dangerous. Just annoying enough to prove that evolution is a lie." Honestly, the more stuff like this I see, the more convinced I am that all the animals in the wild think humanity is actually a bunch of different sub-species. Cub: "Aren't those humans?" Mom: "Yes, but it's only the hunter humans we fear. Those are tourist humans. And we're safe in proximity to them. They're annoying as all Hell, yes, but that's what keeps the hunter humans away from here."

    • Not really. Bears in that area know humans are not a threat. The ONLY people in that park that are armed are the Rangers, the rest of pepper spray. Bears are not hunted there, and the bears know this. As long as you don't make yourself a threat, the bear will leave you alone. They remained calm, didn't act stupid or tried to threaten the bear. You will notice that the bear didn't act threatening towards the humans, made sure that her cubs were on the other side of her. Most bears wont care if there is a human around. It's when someone makes a move towards her that things go bad. Bears don't go around attacking humans for no good reason. They don't want to spend the energy doing that. The park has about 80,000 people every year and there has only been one minor incident. Timothy Treadwell ignored the Ranger and wasn't even where this bear was. Understanding bear language is one of the best ways to avoid conflict. A bear rearing up on its hind legs is not preparing to devour hikers, it is simply getting a better perspective on what kind of bi-pedal, lime-green-polar fleece-wearing creature is approaching. Avoid eye contact and back away slowly while speaking loudly, but calmly. Do not run, bears like many animals, will instinctively chase fleeing creatures, including humans. If you back away calmly and give the bear its space, more than likely it will make a hasty retreat. Almost every single Ranger in Denali, Katmai, and Glacier say the same thing.

    • "Bears in that area know humans are not a threat." Wow, how do you know, do you send bears in the area a shot survey every month or something? This is just stupid, these are wild animals, they don't "know", they use their instinct and react to the environment. What if one of the humans can not keep their cool and starts running, or one of the bear cubs runs towards the humans? You have a powerful and not fully predictable wild animal, that can kill all of these idiots in seconds, especially with the bears cubs around as well.

If they would have started to run away in panic, the bear would probably be unsettled and put her guard up. As the guy mentioned in the beginning, just relax and leave her room to pass by. The bear didn't identify the tourist as threats to begin with, that's why she walked towards them, she would never bring her cubs towards them otherwise. But as you say though, you don't want to startle a bear with cubs. But I don't think they were lucky, that's a word I wouldn't use.

    • Thats a brown bear, the coastal river version of the grizzly. They are very chill because they don't compete for food like the skinner inland grizzlies do. Let alone the fact that this is a tourist location so these bears are very used to people. But this is also a fact about all bears. They will not charge into a group of people, it's not like in movies where they're just mindless raging machines that don't care how much they get hurt. They'll only take fights they can reasonably win with little to no injuries. It's not going to charge into a group of humans or a couple moose or a herd of caribou, they just won't.

    • Humans are not as slow as you think. Humans evolved to be endurance hunters and successful ones at that. Marathons where people, even those who are considered geriatric, run twenty miles or more by training to do so. Basically practice. No other animal is capable or physiologically built to do this. Almost any human can take advantage of this evolutionary adaptation if they choose to.

  • Not a bear-human relations expert, but I think the key distinctions between this very close encounter with a mother bear and her cubs and more eventful instances (besides what some others have commented about this particular National Park, Katmai, hosting bears that are used to human presence, which I have no comment on) are that here: (1) it would seem the mother bear was continuously very aware of the humans presence from a long distance/time leading up to this, due to clear line-of-sight environment (2) the mother freely, pretty calmly (some chewing motions but no grunts) walked in the direction of the humans, of all possible directions she could choose to walk in, _with her cubs_ mind you. (3) the humans were relatively numerous and more densely packed into a group (less worth the bears energy and perceived safety to antagonize preemptively), and (4) the humans safely stayed put as and after the bears approached and importantly did not approach the bears at any time (the one lady shouldn't have elevated herself to look into the camera imo tho). Had the humans suddenly moved location/walked in a way that seemed like an advance to the bear, or the cubs by extremely bad luck investigated them, disaster was more likely, but none of that happened. This is all to refute a lot of the simplistic comments that confidently state how 'totally stupid' these people apparently are for 'getting that close to a mother bear and her cubs'. The only stupid things were the people splitting into two opposite groups for the bear to pay attention to, potentially making it feel more cornered, and the light chatter/camera noises. Almost all bear attacks on humans who are not literally hunting/chasing bears (they get what's coming to them as a risk) happen because the human (or humanS; though they're probably usually disparate enough to be seen as smaller single threats) has unknowingly or foolishly advanced on and so threatened the bear, since bears do NOT hunt humans, and then failed to do the proper defensive bear safety protocol. The victims in those scenarios are also likely up and moving around up until they see the bear/her cubs and/or the bear sees them, which comes as a sudden surprise to either party at what is now deemed a threatening distance to the bear, filling the encounter with much additional stress and uncertainty for both parties. None of that happens in this video.

  • also....I'm sure the "tour guide" bear biologist had to change his underwear after miscalculating the bears behavior. When the bears started coming his direction he had no possible safe out except to tell the group to, "slide back". Slide back to where? The lapping waves of the shoreline? I don't care what title he gives himself, there is NO WAY he could predict what that Grizzly was going to do. He's just lucky this didn't turn into a tragedy with him getting those people killed

    • unless the bears are starving, sick, or the people presented a threat by making sudden movements and screaming and such, I really don't see why the mama bear would go out of her way to just start attacking, personal space sure, but it wasn't like THEY were encroaching on her, they were stationary.
