Ford Lightning MAJOR Battery Failure - Buyer Beware

The battery in my Ford F-150 Lightning's EV just failed after 11 months and 12,000 miles. This is a major issue and one that you need to be aware of before you consider buying a Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck.
In recent months, there have been a number of reports of the Ford F-150 Lightning experiencing major battery failure. I'm finding out that repairs can take months if you can find a dealer that is available. I also share my thoughts on the other electric truck options like the Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck that is coming out soon.

  • UPDATE: My Lightning was at the dealership for the battery replacement repair for 16 days, which was actually quicker then I anticipated. A few days after I dropped it off, Ford also assigned me a "Battery Electric Vehicle Agent" that emailed/called with regular updates. If Ford has a dedicated position for this, I'm assuming battery failures are a major issue they are trying to get in front of to stop the news from spreading. I have heard lots of stories from other EV owners that repairs are taking much longer then I experienced. I was not given an exact cost but the dealer told me if it was out of warranty the cost would have been $10,000 or MORE due to the cost of the replacement battery and significant labor required to switch the battery module out. So far no issues since I have had the truck back. I'm now on the fence if I want to keep the Lightning or not after this experience and questioning the reliability of the truck.

    • Just wait for the resale value hit once they're out of warranty....will be massive. And driving an EV truck as if it's a car isn't really a fair comparison to an actual truck that can tow and haul...which is what many owners use them for. Lightnings towing are pitiful with range of around 100 miles from what I've seen...not acceptable for people who need a TRUCK.

    • Thanks for the update on this, I was wondering about the outcome. Did they replace the entire battery, or just parts of it? If they replaced the entire battery, does the battery warranty start new and you have another 100k mile warranty from your current mileage? Guess Im thinking about the cost of fuel, ICE vs EV. That approximate math over 200k miles for ICE can be upward of $30,000 vs $12,000 for battery. Even if the new battery did cost you 15k, it still seems a little cheaper, all other things equal. It's a tough call, I would like to purchase an F150 Lightning but stuff like this has me waiting it out. Sticking with my 2010 F150 :-). Its paid for.

  • This situation seems to be widespread so far in Quebec, Canada and the way in which Ford manages this is unacceptable. A new product under quality guarantee should not be held at a dealership for more than a week. In the best scenario Ford could simply replace the battery with a new one and send the defective one to the workshop for reconditioning for future rapid replacement of the defective battery.

  • I bought 2023 at the end of July I have 2281 miles on the truck and 10/10 I got the same message. I called Ford they towed it into the local Dealer. It is still there. Mine was the 4th module that showed a lower voltage then the rest. They were able to get the new module, but they could not get their battery balancer to work so they had to order another one. Then at the beginning of November they found they were missing the cable to connect to a Lightning to balance the new module to the rest of the battery. I just found out yesterday that each time the find some they are missing the order it ground which to me is completely unacceptable after all this time. They should be shipping overnight. The cable is supposed to arrive next Tuesday it will probably take another week unless they find some other equipment they are missing. I cannot believe they don't do their do-diligence to make sure they have everything they need. They told me this will be the first time they have done this which does not make me feel very good based on their past performance. I here that after the repair the software update will make it so it will be less sensitive to voltage differences, but I have no proof just saw it in a forum. Supposedly it will also reduce the speed of the fast charge, but again no proof. I barely got to drive this truck and already in the shop with a major problem. Since the Dealer has not done this before I hope after this is not turn into one thing after another or shabby work that causes other issues. But even after all this I like this truck. The short time I have had it I love that charging at home it costs me a fraction of what a gas or diesel truck would cost for fuel. That is the one thing why I never bought a truck because it costs you a fortune in fuel costs for day to day and little errands here and there. At first I had the range anxiety, but then I started treating it like my smartphone and just got in the habit of plugging it in every time I get down to about 50% and only charge to 80% and that has been great to always wake up to pretty fully charged truck and never have take time to go to the gas station. I am still positive on this truck I would not give up on it for anything. I love this truck. Even if Ford reduces production it will only make my truck go up in value. Proof of that is when GM first tried electric cars in the 90's and they had the small EV truck years later it cost more then the original. For all the nay-sayers on EV's all I got to say is if we had people like you back when the first automobiles came out with absolutely no infrastructure we would all be still be riding horses. Just like Microwaves and Computers it takes pioneers to get it all worked out for rest.

I’ll have to look at which module it was but it did take just under a month for the dealer to get it fixed and that was largely due to supply. I’ve put 1400 miles on since the fix and so far no issues. Ford was great at contacting and updating me. I gambled going with the Lightning but it is designed so well that it was the right fit for me. I traded in my’17 f150 eco-boost due to several factors including their 10 speed transmission experiment that only lasted 90k miles, plastic drain pans that lose their seal (trans wasn’t leaking) and ford’s consistent recall across their entire product lineup. One more issue and Ford is dead to me😂

  • I never understand when EV companies have a problem getting parts out to replace stuff... They are still actively producing and selling these, why can they not divert a battery module like the same DAY to where people need it. Its greedy on them hoard them all for the new trucks to just go sit in a lot vs keeping their existing customers happy. Its not really a shortage, its the company deciding what to do with the supplies.

  • Sadly when a major system fails it definitely makes one lose confidence in the vehicle. It would be useful to know what percentage of the Lightnings are having such failures. If the number is above 2% of all sold that could signal lots of defective batteries sold to Ford for installation in their vehicles. Unfortunately, in the rush to produce these EV's many manufacturers failed to have the supporting parts and supplies in stock for quick repairs leading to horror stories like this one where customers have to wait months for a repairs. The supply chain has not caught up with vehicle sales as all EV owners find out when they need something repaired.

If you do a true comparison with depreciation and initial cost, most electric vehicles come out second. I own a conventional car and a plug in hybrid. The hybrid is great for local driving, but there is no way it would be my choice on a trip or my only car.

  • So, I just received the same error this month on my 2022 Ford F150 Lightning Lariat. My local dealer in Maryland kept my vehicle for 11 days to order parts and replace the faulty battery pack. I am a little concerned since my vehicle was also part of the January battery recall that was only supposed to affect trucks that came from one of Ford's plants. I went to different Ford dealer for that recall and it took almost two months since their equipment broke at that location. Hence, the reason I decided not to go back to that location for this issue. I'm curious to know if EV owner's of different manufacturers like GM have experienced the same issues with the Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, or even Silverado EV since they use the Ultium battery. The 2023 Lexus RZ uses a different battery pack as well. I think there is going to be a long period of learning how to maintain these vehicles at dealerships. I hear Tesla has this perfected since they've had about a decade of practice. However, I will say Tesla owners I know have taken their vehicles in for repairs far more than I have over the same amount of time of ownership. I'm looking forward to see the Lightning's refresh. Will they switch over to the 800v battery architecture? Will they be able to promise over 500 miles of range like Chevy Silverado EV and RAM 1500 REV?

A gas engine doesn’t have anywhere near that number of parts. A battery pack is a ticking time bomb. Only as strong as the weakest link. Imagine having 8000 light bulbs. Once one starts going out, the rest are soon to follow.

  • Never own a ford again when I waited 6 months for a recall I was approved for. They started blowing me off so I traded it in for a Toyota.

  • There are more EV models that have had widespread battery problems than not. (I've owned a couple, currently own an M3).

  • Sounds like your dealership is one of the dealerships that's thrown in the towel on the EV's. You know better than buying a first years production. Could you pay me enough to deal with all issues with the Cyber truck, including having an on the never-ending game of "Keep away" or "Hide and Seek" from the local branch of the "Gone In Sixty Seconds" crew.

  • Just think, the carbon deficit that each ev starts out with is equivalent to about 70000 miles. Now add another battery, and youre at 140000 miles before your total carbon emissions go below those of an ice vehicle. Makes no sense. Big fan of electric driveline, but the batteries arent there yet. These batteries are massively complicated electrochemical engines. Way more complicated than a good old fashioned gasoline engine.

  • As a contractor in BC Canada, there is no way an ev truck would do our day to day. I just bought a used 6.6 duramax HD truck
