Let's dive into my Ford Lightning problems, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Is this one of the best ev trucks? Two summers and one winter later, how much range does Ford F-150 Lightning battery lose? Something to consider when looking for best electric trucks 2024. This is the base model Ford F150 Lightning XLT with the standard range battery.

  • I appreciate the honest evaluation of the vehicle. The biggest issues I had with my 2023 XLT Lightning were also software related. Unlike your truck, mine had not received any updates. That is why I took it upon myself to purchase a 2 day FDRS license from Ford and apply the updates myself. Many of the issues you mentioned were affecting my truck as well and are now fixed. Ford is very conservative when it comes to the roll out schedule for updates, just as they are with range estimates. It is possible that the updates to fix your issues are available, but have not yet been pushed to your truck. There are members on several F150 and Lightning forums that can check your VIN to see what is available. There are also folks willing to loan the necessary programming cable for the cost of shipping. Hopefully you can get your issues fixed and continue to enjoy your truck.

  • Dealership service centers have generally become horrible in my experience. I totally understand the motivation to sell. They’ve always been an expensive option, but now you can’t even trust that they’ll do the work they are charging you for. It really leads toward another conversation about what direction that industry is taking overall. Happy for you that Carmax wholesale offer was that high;

    • And it's also a downside of EVs. You have less choice in mechanics. There are good ones out there, and great dealerships as well, but the more choice the better, to make everyone competitive and so you don't have to drive an hour to find a good option.

  • I put a lot of thought into my purchase. I put a long time into waiting the day they opened orders for this. I got my name on the list and waited, waited and waited. I had many opportunities to walk out on this. I labored over it. I had always wanted a truck but the way I drive, gas would have bankrupted me. I put a ton of miles on a vehicle daily / monthly / yearly. It's my office. I like new stuff, I like cool factor, I like durability, I like something I can beat the crap out of or at least try (its a clean machine). I bought it for use. Its got over 40K. I bought it for utility, versatility, some aesthetic and some cool shit. It's fast! Its comfy, Is effin amazing and i use the hell out of it. Do some things annoy me? Who is not annoyed about something? Can it be better, product and service? Yes. Ford and GM are not marketing this vehicle right and some youtubers or tick tokers are hammering it. GM is not marketing their EV's right either (at least I have not heard of them other than hearsay). This vehicle, it truly is an amazing machine. People knock it a lot who don't even own it. Its gonna have issues between operation (temperature / range / charging) and frankly all EV's do! You plan, adapt and overcome. You have to un-think how the ICE works and think how an EV's work. Any vehicle I wanted, fully loaded would have cost this or close the Lariat ER I drive. But then I would have to pay for gas. My bill is less than half what ICE would be. I love my truck and I guess that's good cause its gonna be with me a long time or the end of the battery life, whichever comes first.

    • You plan to sell it with a dead battery?

      @TJF13@TJF133 ай бұрын
    • Last week a sales guy at Ford told me the new battery costs $45,000. He also told me that we don’t recommend people tow with the Lightning. As a Minnesota contractor pulling a 6000 pound trailer everyday, an EV truck is a job ender. Hopefully you didn’t pay a premium for your truck. With dealerships drowning in Lightnings and 40K mileage on yours I bet you couldn’t sell it for $.50 on the dollar if you were in a bind.

  • Absolutely agree with your software/dealership issues. The truck has been great so far, but we've only had our XLT for 2 months and all I can say about the software is 'meh/buggy'. We also had to return our Ford Mobile charger because it stopped working (truck was fine), and instead of sending us a return/replacement label support staff wanted us to drive it to a parts service center because the charger is considered a 'part'. For a WARRENTY replacement!! Absolutely ridiculous, and only certain dealerships are considered a 'parts' dealership. The truck is nice and comfy, but we're not buying any accessories from Ford ever again.

    • Yeh it's frustrating. Ford manufacturing worked hard and gave us a decent product. Sad to see some dealerships diminish that hard work. I hope Ford realizes that their image is heavily dealership dependent. Thanks for sharing about your experience.

I have an email chain dating back to June 2023, I bought a Maverick plastic tailgate cover on the inside with points, was missing the bolts, had to visit dealership for pickup (3-4 times and they still never even sent it back yet! Had to call 10+ times), I'm still awaiting refund on pts!!! I ended up buying, again the same part but paid to deliver to my house and it worked out, but still waiting for refund on points!

Initial impressions at 1 month of ownership: --the Lightning has a much smoother and quieter ride. --the Model X UI was MUCH better. At the risk of alienating Samsung phone users, the Model X was OS, while the Lightning is Android. Hopefully, UI issues will be addressed via updates so I won't have to do so much menu-diving. Once again, thanks for a great video, Liked & Subscribed!

Took 6 weeks to get the module and less than 6hrs to replace! Other than that ridiculous amount of down time and the glitchy software I love the truck. Kids and wife are also enthralled with it. Same day for everything and maybe a week wait to get an appt. I don't think there are many other Lightnings here in Modesto, CA, but they have taken care of me and the truck. I don't live in really brutal weather in winter, lowest is 30's but not often. I do have a garage but I am only Level 1 charging. I have been able to charge to 100% when I do charge up before a trip. I know it's the best vehicle I have ever had, and I wouldn't sell it. At 13K miles so far, I will see what next year brings for it and me. I appreciate your videos. • I own it for a year now.. 27k miles on mine.. no issues... drives likes dream.. winter limits the rage though. haul 1800lb easy barely effects the range, but no towing... anything heavy range goes down by 50%. if someone considering make sure you have a home charger, nobody should buy EV without home charger unless you wanna find out the waiting line when you pull up to EV charger between normal usage hours. Range anxiety is real when you leave big cities and going somewhere remote. Lasting thing not all EV chargers priced fairly, in fact they charge you triple if you have no other choice to charge with them. Yeah.

  • The one thing I love is that ford kept the classic F-150 look. It’s not some funky crossover like most EV’s are. Gotta give Ford props for that. I considered it but I wouldn’t make use of a truck with my current health, so I got a Model 3 Tesla.

  • The only cons I have are the software issues/UI. Other than that, the truck is phenomenal. In my first year I have over 23,000 miles. It’s my favorite vehicle I’ve had. If you can’t charge around home, EVs aren’t going to work well for your day to day. Also- Measuring degradation shouldn’t be done through the guess-o-meter. The best way is to drive near 0%, charge to 100%, and see how many kWh it added to the pack.

  • Thanks for the videos! I got my Lightning lariat about a year ago. It’s been great overall. The software needs some updates but the over the air ones have helped. They redid the settings menu, added the camera button on the sync 4a screen and the battery % on the dash. It’s provided power for my family three times this year during power outages (keeping my sump pump and fridge running). The frunk is my favorite part, it’s been very helpful. Just removed the annoying beeping speaker a few weeks ago and it’s so much better. I got tired of announcing to my neighbors when I had to open/close it, especially early morning or late at night.

The bluetooth phone call some time doesn't work when I call out or getting call in, it makes noise can't hear anything, when I connected apple carplay never have that issue. the other thing is the towing mileage is really suck, I got about only 180km to 200km about 130 miles towing range(empty trailer), and one time I passed the exit by accident, it stopped on the road when it still showed 6km left, only 3km far way from charging statation, my tesla never drop me when it become "0".

So far so good i love the truck practicality confort traveling with my family from highland ca, thru San Francisco round trip. My question is even if im happy with my current truck, i’m still dreaming to own a ford lightning, as a regular home owner type of use. No solar panels installed currently at home, how ever im an electrician which will cost me $0 labor to install level 2 charger at home. Also my round trip commute from home to work each day is 2.5miles, also free chargers available at work. This factors are pushing me to really consider switch my current F-150. Any thoughts? • Excellent presentation. Thank you. Honestly, 20% depreciation is roughly normal for the first year on new trucks. Would probably be another 20% in the next year. With Ford drastically scaling back production on that truck due to poor sales, I am really surprised that the depreciation wasn't far worse. In general, for most real truck people that use their trucks as trucks, the Lightning is just not a very good truck at this point. We will see how folks really feel about them after driving them for 5-7 years and putting 150,000 miles on them. I have put over 200,000 on every truck I have ever owned with my current one having 320,000 and still going strong while looking and driving practically new still.

    • Just to be clear for some people reading this...they are not cutting production, it is actually increasing. It's just not increasing as much as they had planned. They were going to increase to 3200 units a week, now they are only increasing to 1600 units a week to be closer to demand.

My Wife and I ended up loving the Lightning so much, I had decided to trade away my recently purchased Silverado, and as of January 5th of this year, now have two XLT 2023 Lightnings. For the type of driving we do, with furthest travels being 200 miles (Las Vegas), this was an easy decision. My drives her Avalanche color, while I elected the Carbonized Gray Metallic. Both are SR batteries, which is more than enough for our day to day driving.

I think that's the difference between legacy manufacturers and Tesla/Rivian that start with a clean slate and took years to develop good software. I would not recommend an EV if you can't level 2 charge at home. Ford (and GM ) dealers don't really want to sell or service EVs so your experience is what I would have expected. I'm fortunate to have Rivian and Tesla service centers within 20 miles of me but haven't needed either. Also surprised you feel dealers are a plus (your comment below). Never again for me. Good luck to you. Enjoy your videos and sense of humor.

It would not even stand still at the dealer. A F150 Lariat 2023 is about 100 000 USD and the price of gasoline is about 7,60 USD per gallon. And the yearly tax would be around 2800 USD. You can have all the nice benefits of electric fuel economy with the reliability of gas when you need it. What i thing for should do is a full plug in hybrid with the 2.7L ecoboost. Having the low end torque from the electric motors would likely make it the fastest 0 to 60 gas pickup. And still break 8k lbs for towing.

  • As an very early EV adopter, I get a kick out of N00b's starting their experience with a pricey unit. All the problems are exaspertated based on the price paid for the vehicle, and alters their thought process on getting another one. I started off with a 2012 Leaf, that got a shitty range of 80 miles. But what it taught me was how to drive an EV to get the most range as possible(best range ever was 118), and all for a total monthly lease payment of $175. So when I see someone who has ZERO EV experience shell out $50K Plus on their first EV and produce videos like this and the others, I just SMH. Since my Leaf, I have had a Ford Fusion Energi, that while not a ture EV, I was able to get 165mpg because I knew how to drive in EV mode because of my learning experience with the Leaf. I currently have a 2019 Bolt, and now a 2022 Lucid. As an experienced EV driver, I know my cars are "zippy", but I don't have to prove it to anyone. My main concern is range. I consistantly get 250 to 275 mile range on the Bolt that should only get 220 on the new battery pack. The old battery pack, the one they said had problems I was getting 300 mile range. But it wasn't the battery pack that was the problem, it was their charge controller. The Bolts tech sheet says it should pull 7.2KW during charging, but I monitored it pulling 11KW. Basic math tells you this is going to cause problems, and with Lithium Ion batteries, excess energy gets converted into heat, and boom there's the problem, Thermal run away. But Chevy didn't want to listen to a dumb ass customer and just blamed the battery. My Lucid, I consistantly get 470 mile range. Lucid's Customer Support is excellent, and while hypercharging at a EA, I was monitoring the charging rate, and the numbers were not making sense. I called Lucid Support (and it was 2am), and they got my permission to log into the car and download the event. Long story short based on my data and the numbers I provided they identified a Charge Controller problem and issued a national recall. As for service, I learned a long time ago, that when you shop for cars, you talk to the people in the service area to find out how they have been treated on the same type of vehicle, because let's face it, you are not only buying the vehicle, but the service department too. I also have a very large solar array on my house, so home charging and total costs for Charging is Zero. I'm now installing an EP Cube that has off grid EV charging....So things only get better. My advice to your viewers is if you want a good experience, perhaps you should work your way into the field slowly like I did, starting off at the bottom and working your way up and learning as you go, or you can over pay to get the unit you think is the best because everyone else has them, and when problems start to happen, make videos like this!
